I hired Clement & Sons Excavation to repair a section of my driveway in front of my garage, expecting professional-quality work. The work was performed by the owner, his wife, and a minor child without my knowledge or consent, who actively participated in spreading and compacting the driveway material.
The repaired area was supposed to match the existing packed gravel driveway, be properly graded, and be compacted. Unfortunately, the finished product fell far short of what was discussed. The material placed does not match the existing driveway and contains numerous oversized loose stones that are unsuitable for a finished driveway surface and make snowblower and plow use difficult. Large piles of loose stone were left instead of a uniformly graded and compacted surface.
Other portions of the repair contain loose material and areas with little or no pack. The driveway is uneven, improperly graded, and has a significant ridge where the repaired section meets the existing driveway. Additional areas outside the repair were disturbed and left unpacked, and the area in front of my garage doors was left in poor condition.
I promptly notified the contractor of these issues. Rather than resolving them, I later received a demand for payment that increased the original written estimate by an additional $800 for material removal--a charge that was never included in the estimate, never discussed with me beforehand, and never approved by me.
I have since obtained an independent estimate of approximately $5,000 to correct the driveway.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Clement & Sons Excavation. read more
