Luckily, Halloween only happens once a year but year round Geoff's is the place that truly does have everything. I am most often here for random products like baby oil ($6 for a small bottle of branded petroleum by-product at a supermarket? $2 here), fabric dye, art supplies, sewing stuff and what must be Auckland's cheapest fabric. No offence to Spotlight, but go here first if you need anthing crafty. There's ribbon, cotton, buttons, sparkly bits, belt buckles, bra pads, googly eyes, appliques, patches.... on and on and on. The fabric selection is no small part of the shop and the pricing fairly freakin ridiculous. You'll also find toys, costume jewellery, probably Auckland's biggest range of wigs and "ready-costumes" for adults and kids, as well as such essential props as tiaras, plastic swords, feather boas, cowboys hats, gloves, face paint and garters. There are paints, brushes, canvases, dyes, sketch books...... You can even buy paperbacks, hardware, kitchen equipment, candles and it just goes on. What I love most about Geoff's is that it has been around as long as I can remember and as far as I know, Geoff himself is still around too. My kids love coming here with a handful of coins and leaving with treasures and so do I. The staff are awesome and Geoff's is such a wonderful reminder to me that some things don't ever change, they just get better with age.

But then I walked in further, through the narrow door and into a huge space, filled with all manner of crafty supplies! I was there to buy interfacing, and buy it I did - 5m for $5! Incredible prices. I also got a zip for $1.05 and a belt buckle kit for $1. The prices are insane, even cheaper than what I paid living in the US. I saw some gorgeous fabrics in there, too, but I'm trying to watch my fabric budget right now so I sadly left it behind...for now. The woman who served me was really friendly, carefully rolled up my interfacing and asked about my projects. I can't wait to go back and browse their fabrics some more, and they will definitely be my go-to place for notions, too! I didn't explore the rest of the shop too closely, as I had a sick husband in tow, but they have a huge range of paint/art supplies, party supplies, incense and other trinkets, and heaps of other stuff too.

It's a crafting space/cute sewing supply shop, run by the lovely Sarah and her intern, Rosie. Maybe you want to use a sewing machine or an overlocker for a few hours, maybe you want to cut out some patterns, or do some handstitching. Maybe you don't know anything at all about sewing, but you'd love to learn. Or maybe you just want to pick up some gorgeous vintage fabrics, notions, or handcrafted items from local NZ craftspeople. You can do all of these things here, and if you need a helping hand, Sarah and Rosie are more than happy to give you a few pointers. Everything inside is reclaimed/recycled - the machines, the tools, the fabric - everything! The decor is really cute and cosy, with the mismatching stools, and the lovely sewing decorations hanging everywhere. They offer classes on how to start sewing, or how to make skirts/tops, or how to mend clothes you already have, and refashioning stuff from your wardrobe! They also offer knitting classes, all at very reasonable prices. If you order coffee from Alleluya, they'll even bring it over to you in the cafe!

I recently discovered them on Instagram and saw that they were opening a store in St Kevins Arcade on K'Road (full of exciting things). I was so thrilled because it is a seriously awesome shop! It is a haven for all things colourful, whether it be art, jewellery, stationery, books, candles or homewares! I loved everything I came across in Matchbox, but here is a taste of what you might find: - Funky colourful cards (for example the Koala dressed in a Hawaiian shirt) - Range of art prints, including skulls (yay!), famous people, grumpy cat, etc. - The Beatles tea bags (check out the picture!) - Candles and soaps (all with very nice scents) and - Colourful cups, straws, plates and napkins - perfect for picnics or parties at home, plus so much more! The shop assistant was friendly and she was really happy when I signed up to their mailing list. How could I not - everything at Matchbox is fabulous and fun! Their fabric range is best described as solid; there are a few high end, beautiful fabrics, but mostly it's the type of fabrics you need for everyday items, and at reasonable prices. If you know you definitely need 2.5metres of navy wool blend, don't waste your time rifling through the emporiums; just come here; you'll be in and out in minutes. Arthur Toye also have a big range of patterns, and will order them in for you if they don't have them in stock.

Newish ownership with wonderful staff who also are knitters, crocheters and sewers so they know what they are talking about. On a Monday and Tuesday they have an informal group session where you can go with your project and get advice if it's needed or just craft. during the week they also give advice and will help you. prices are competitive.

I did call first and ask if they had any, and they confirmed they did, so off I went. Firstly, it's a little hard to find, as it's tucked away at the back of a little arcade and the only sign it might be in there is an old Janome sign on the street. It's quite small, but seemed to have a decent range of yarn and sewing machines, fabric and notions. Unfortunately, their selection of knitting needles was quite small, and extremely overpriced. They were selling the same needles in there that I later saw in Knit World, only they wanted about $8 more for them! I'll go back to check out their sewing supplies, since I've heard good things, and hopefully their prices for fabric are more reasonable.

I can understand why people get excited about it though- there's so much cheap stuff and it does all have a purpose...it's just that the purpose is usually one day of being a St Paddy's day costume or a party decoration, and then being chucked. I get even more moralistic when I think of the wages the people are paid who make this stuff that. But don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I never buy anything plastic or made in a developing country. I just don't want to see a whole shop full of the stuff. It brings me down.

It's clean, well laid out and easy to find whatever you're in the market for - from costumes to dress socks, candles to key rings, Look Sharp has it all... and it's cheap! Many times I've rushed to this store for that last minute item that will make a costume or decorated room really pop - I can't even count the number of times I've flipped on the hazard lights, parked in a place that really annoys the taxi drivers and run in to grab streamers, beer-drinking hats, striped armbands or paint. Seriously, anything silly and frivolous you could ever want is under this roof.

Ikes used to be the place to go if you needed a proper sized flag of your home country. For $10 they had a huge selection of international flags behind the counter. When I was there last week I couldn't see any indication they were selling these anymore. The place looks quite run down and messy, I'd rather shop at the Look Sharp Store in Albany for costumes, party & craft/sewing supplies.

This antiques store deals exclusively in teacups and drink and serveware. I couldn't believe it when I saw it, I thought I must have died and gone to heaven. How many places can you go to these days that you can actually buy novelty teaspoons to add to your own teaspoon collection! Needless to say I went a little mad in this store. But I actually needed some cups and things anyway, and this option is way cheaper than buying whole sets from Briscoes or somewhere and so much cuter!

Babouska Antiques in Westmere is as the name suggests - packed to the brim with antiques often of a…read moreRussian persuasion. It's a peculiar place that isn't open very often - just four hours a day, three days a week - but if you can manage to get in during these strange times you'll find a really excellent range of china, ceramics, glass and other oddities. My flatmate collects Russian dolls and always finds a new and interesting variation when we go there. I think the weirdest one we ever found was shaped like a Russian doll but had grotesque caricatures of the last seven Russian leaders on each doll. They were super creepy but really fascinating - who would make this stuff? And why?
