With there being some exceptions I usually here black people complain about something. There's really no end to it. They complain about hundreds of subjects and then they bring on highly acclaimed specialists to butress the claims. Essentially, what I hear is black people in the United States of America complaining about being black in their country. They use the word 'Africa' from time to time and let's be real, there's no connection between Africa and the people complaining about 'whatever' on this RADIO STATION. You know, it's all the OPPOSITE of uplifting. 'How to keep a black man down' might be a title to consider . Can you imagine a child listening to this day in and day out? The child is surely going to grow up thinking that s/he is somehow 'less than'... Sad. Hey now, you say, 'It's not all like this!' and tell me that there are some parts that are empowering. Truth be told, I am not going to listen for some 24 hours searching for some bits of wisdom that may be there. What I have experienced is polite enough folks that are angry and want to get something from somebody. New subject: It's hard for young people to say 'buy a house' today. Right? Listen to this Radio Station and you have a zero chance of getting a house because there's no mentoring going on. People who own a house are different than Renters with a Landlord. Get your first house and then get a second one. Break out of this poverty of the mind, stop seeking to blame someone, become an owner of one house , and then get number two and learn to be a proper landlord. Become a Leader. Turn off the radio. Visit Africa. Be very careful with what you let dominate your thoughts, that is, if you want to be successful. Ahh. Now we're at the point where you tell me to f. off and mind my own business.

*** I recently attended a screening hosted by KCRW, The Document. ***…read more The movie was titled "Maiden" about the Whitbread Round the World yacht race. It was a grueling open-ocean race dominated historically by only men. But in 1989, a young woman put together an all-female crew to challenge that. The Document invited hundreds of KCRW members to attend, so I RSVP'd. And I'm glad that I did. This film is inspirational. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=mGn0PJVXuasfx_E_5a1E9g I am not a woman and I don't sail, yet even I was inspired by this story. These women sailed the sea for about six months against tremendous odds (including the Southern Ocean off the coast of Antartica). Amazing! That inspires me to challenge myself much more in my life as a result. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/writers-guild-theater-beverly-hills-2?select=LMNKf0eXIqhQnlkXLtAKaw There were several food trucks and complimentary wine followed by a Q&A with the yacht captain Tracy Edwards and "Maiden" director Alex Holmes. Overall, a very nice event held at the Writer's Guild theatre. *** I don't subscribe to KCRW for its perks, but nice to partake. ;p ***

I can only find five listenable L.A. commercial radio stations including, grudgingly, easy-listening 94.7 The Wave, in case of a miracle. But memory button #1 is set at 88.9, public radio from Loyola Marymount University in Westchester. To me, a sporadic indie-music listener, almost everything KXLU plays is uncommon, refreshing, and a hopeful note for music's present and future. Some of the DJs are noticeably underripe, but it's fun to hear young broadcasters as they develop their air personas. The station streams live on kxlu.com, and could broaden one's tastes with its variety of specialty programs, some including "noise music" (Oh, how I wish a radio station would have played that back in the homework days). TIME-WARP DIALOG...Mom: "What's that NOISE you're listening to?" Young KXLU Listener: "Noise, mom." International music consists of mostly Latin titles as played on its durable weekend fixture, "Alma del Barrio," bringing to mind loitering over empty pitchers of sangria at Venice Boulevard's Versailles Cuban restaurant. After a lengthy listening hiatus, it was a delight to find an old favorite, Reverend Dan, still hosting "Music for Nimrods," a program in the spirit of '70s phenoms Frazer Smith, Rodney Bingenheimer (both on KROQ) and Dr. Demento (KPPC, KMET); a bonanza of old, new, rare and novelty tracks, and DJ patter nimbly fitted to end with his production-music backing tune. It's a great segue into a Saturday hangover (3-6 a.m.). My recent return to KXLU, due to disgust at blocks of radio commercials with occasional rock-music interruptions, has me hoping it won't be necessary to again work the TEAC remote's memory buttons--except for maybe #3, The Wave.
