This marker points out the birthplace of this local who went on to serve in the highest office in the state of West Virginia and state's circuit court.
The marker reads, "Born February 11, 1904, in Beckley. Meadows, a lawyer, entered public service in 1930. He served as state delegate, county prosecutor and WV Attorney General before becoming a judge of the 10th Circuit in 1942. As governor (1945-49) he oversaw passage of a road bond, increased teacher pay, and called for new state office space. Died September 12, 1961, in VA: buried in Beckley."
Other information is available online. Meadows won the 1944 election for governor with ease thanks to a then-modern campaign that included numerous radio interviews. His top concerns as governor were reducing labor unrest in the coal industry, expanding access to high-quality education, and enhancing transportation in the remote state of West Virginia.
The marker was erected in 2020 by the Raleigh County Historical Society and the West Virginia Archives and History.
