It was only until recently we found out the story behind the home and that one of our beloved yuletide traditions is the same for a recorded 12,000 other people in the region including buses and vans with residents from local seniors homes, handicapped and terminally ill children also. Tom Culkin (no relation to Macaulay, I believe... but kind of ironic, don't you think?) is the owner of the home. He is now 66 years old and a former city police detective. He began decorating his house for Christmas 37 years ago when his daughters were just little girls. He received tremendous response from neighbors, friends and family, he decided to make it an annual event. The house is decorated with the latest popular children's characters drawn by local artist Jeff D'Angelo. Each year they add a new one to the display! Expect to also see Minions from "Despicable Me" and Sully and Mike from "Monsters, Inc."Ariel and Snow White, as well as Dora the Explorer, Bear in the Big Blue House, the Grinch, Woody and Buzz Lightyear from "Toy Story," the Wiggles, Nemo, Lady and the Tramp, Anna, Elsa and Olaf, Star Wars,Jack Skeleton and more! Don't miss Santa with his list and check if your name is on there! There is no donation box despite the high electric bill the display creates, and when asked about it the response was "It's the Culkin family present to everyone". Love this! I have personally never seen him, but as Dec. 25 rolls around a family friend dresses as Santa Claus and stands outside as part of the display on various nights handing out more than 3,000 candy canes and makes sure to have a word with each child. We combine a drive here (with at least two loops around) with the house down on Orchard St, a drive through Nay Aug Park and a free presentation of The Nutcracker at Marywood. It was like walking into a Wayfair showroom with a pasta kitchen. The branding was a bit horrid in my opinion, but I work in that industry, so I couldn't get over the esthetic before I even got to the food. The TV "paintings" with random art were the "highlight" truly... I'm being too kind. The wedding table numbers, really were killing me in the worst way. This place was like a mishmash of identities with no real clarity of execution or strategy on how to accomplish what they're trying to be. A crash landing of ideas with no real destination. Now the food and drink! The plates were the size of a small luggage! For starters, the "fresh" bread they offered with a rancid tasting olive oil and the tiniest drop of balsamic vinegar was appalling. The calamari was decent at best... it tasted factory made, the coating was thick and it came with the tiniest portions of sauce. I want my calamari, piping hot, with a really thin coating and a ton of sauce, that's just me. The chicken cutlet was a flavorless flour-dredged slab of meat. Barely pounded out and coated in a thin breading, with no seasoning, and it was crazy big! The Gnocchi four cheese was like eating dough turds in glue. The texture was not good at all, and reminded me of undercooked packaged pasta, and weirdly overcooked all the same time... like the water wasn't boiling and they added the pasta in while it was cold. Gnocchi should be pillowy soft and should literally fall apart in the mouth and the cheese sauce should not be like hair gel stuck to the food. It's Italian food, it's supposed to be herbaceous and well seasoned, this was food for non-Italians, who think they could like Italian food if it was just a little more bland and assimilated... without all the immigrant culture, ya know?! The best portion of the dish was the non-alcoholic drink, which is saying a lot. I genuinely hate to leave a terrible impression, but I really hated this meal, and I'm shocked by the reviews. The beef carpaccio came out with a oniony creamy dip, arugula, onion, capers, and dill in the middle on top of the thin meat. Strangely it came with like 4 house made salt and vinegar potato chips. I honestly liked it so much and wanted more and I got it for dessert... 8.8/10. The calamari was perfectly cooked, not chewy at all, and also came with tentacles (my favorite). The cake was bread like and a good balance of the sweet ice cream and apple innards. 6.8/10 Sweet lemon brown sugar tart, this wasn't a favorite of the table but I didn't mind it. It was a cup like tart, with mouse or a cream in it. 5.7/10. Overall experience was pretty good, nothing bad stood out except for the cold bread and non social waitress interaction.
