I will check back occasionally for what I'm in search of.

Sondahl Pottery is exactly the kind of place that makes a road trip more interesting. Tucked away…read morein Spirit Lake, it's a small, rustic pottery shop filled with handmade stoneware by longtime local potter Brad Sondahl, who has been creating and selling his work there for decades. My wife and I each bought a coffee mug for $15, and we loved that no two pieces were exactly alike. The slight imperfections, variations in glaze, shape, and color are what give everything character. It feels handmade because it truly is, not manufactured to look handmade. The honor-system setup may be my favorite part. There's a price book and a calculator inside, and you can choose what you want and pay on your own. That tradition has actually been part of Sondahl Pottery for many years, which somehow makes the experience even cooler. The selection goes well beyond mugs, with bowls, dishes, platters, lidded vessels, lamps, and other functional pieces. It's a little off the beaten path, but if you appreciate handmade crafts, local artists, or just places with genuine personality, it's absolutely worth seeking out.

I took my son to see the lake and while driving away from it I stumbled upon this pottery place. I didn't know what I was getting into but the adventurer in me pulled over to see what this place was all about. I walked up to this outdoor shop and there I found so many lovely handmade pieces that it took me a very long time to narrow it down on what I wanted to buy! Walking around this pottery shop was like stepping into another world in another time! The dusty outdoor floors. The pottery all laid out on wooden shelves. The handmade pieces all unique. The sun shining through the shelves. I just got lost in all of it! There's a small "shack" that you can walk into and view even more pieces of pottery. And what I discovered in there was something very surprising. An honor system! There wasn't anyone in there taking payment or manning the shop. It was all on an honor code. They had paper laid out on a desk where you can write down what items you bought and a cashless system to buy your items with Venmo etc. wow! I've never been to a place like this and I ended up buying 3 pieces. A strainer, honey pot and sourdough container. They now sit on my kitchen counter and go beautifully with my ocean decor theme. I haven't used any of them bc they are just too beautiful.;)

They have artist shows often, sometimes showcasing newer artists. Otherwise you can just walk in and check out a wide variety of works. They have 2 floors of art on the walls and the basement houses many more works that are in racks. Paintings, wood carving, pottery, they have it all available. One of the best things here is their layaway plan. They are super flexible with their plan and will work out the best scenario that works for everyone. They just want you to own pieces that you like, and offer a way for you to achieve that. Super good folks here and worth checking out.

This place always has something that catches my eye and they deal with mostly local artists. If you're into Harold Balazs, Mel McCuddin, Frank Boyden or Robert Grimes, this is your place! Every month they change the gallery by having a new artist(s) show every month, along with participating in First Friday. First Friday you can mingle with the artists and other art nerds while sipping on free wine/beer. The first Saturday of the month, there's usually and artist doing a demonstration, if you're interested in their process. As for the gals who work there, they're fantastic and very informative. Blair has been a great pleasure to converse with and over the years has become a dear friend. Also, if you can't afford that piece that you're dying to have, don't worry, they do a layaway payment plan. If you're an art nerd or just like to look at pretty things, then make this place a "must stop" to see some great eye-candy.
