But if you're seeing a kids film, it's worth coming early to get a good spot. Also worth investing in a portable radio if you don't want to leave your car running the whole time. Really glad it was dog friendly, so it made for a great family night. The spaces aren't very big, but there is plenty of room for a normal-sized vehicle. There are multiple screens, and back-to-back movies on each. The screens are plenty big, and I doubt there is a bad spot to park in the whole place. In the center of all the screens, there is a small building where you can get your popcorn, candy, and drinks, and there are also bathrooms there as well. The only downside to coming here is that it's often quite late when your movie finishes. Starting at dusk in the middle of summer when it doesn't get dark until 10 is a sticky situation. Love it - can't wait to go back!

I'm not sure about the history of the building. Like most places in this area, I suspect it was an older building that was updated. They did a great job. The building is beautiful. While waiting, you are in an open space. They have a small snack bar, there was a table of wares the group was selling, and lots of people congregating. (All wore masks except for two people.) When you do enter the theater, you find your seats. The seats were comfortable. The show started on time and the musicians and dancers did their things. The sound system was marvelous. In sum, this was a great and unexpected experience for a small town. If you find yourself in Whitehall, MI, this is not one to miss.

I, myself, once took to the stage before a full house, and let me be the first (but hopefully not the last!) to say that beneath the lights and under the gaze of your audience, there is no greater thrill than to present your learned story with all of the passion and excitement that you have been saving up to that point! I've also sat in the seats of this wonderful ninety-three year old theater and taken in several shows - the seating, stage, balcony, music pit...all of it is lovingly preserved by amazing volunteers and donors, giving it an antiquated feel that you simply cannot replicate with modern materials. This is the genuine theater experience, and White Lake has it right under their noses. Sadly, there exists no more under-appreciated landmark in all of the White Lake area than the Howmet Playhouse. Donations are constantly being collected, but it seems as though repairs are slow in coming on some occassions. While the money coming in to the Playhouse have been enough to keep it going, it is nothing short of a crime that there exists no established subsidies for its continual maintenance and care. I'm not sure if the White Lake Chamber of Commerce realizes this or not, but looking at the area from the outside, there is VERY little to keep people's attention in regard to tourism. Treasures like the Howmet are the lifeblood of the tourism trade, and more effort should be made in utilizing the playhouse in promoting unique performances that tell the story of the White Lake area. Someone in an official capacity really needs to stand up and take this wonderful building more seriously, realizing its importance in White Lake's existence. If you're in the area, I urge you to take in a show! It's more than just a nostalgic glimpse into the past for long-time residents - it's a piece of it's very history, and that history deserves respect. The Howmet is a truly entertaining venue that will transport you not only into the worlds presented on stage, but also into the past of this beautiful Michigan community.

But these were NOT those circumstances. Instead I found myself and a lot of other people who were seeking a similar experience pushed together tighter than the chickens at Tyson while those of us at the outside were incessantly henpecked by security guards for setting foot even an inch outside of a chalk line on the ground which sat a good ten feet from the handrails and the seating beyond. To make things worse one of the big discussions among people inside this "dance space" was whether it was safe to go relieve our bladders without being stuck out altogether, and indeed the way was blocked for those who didn't just hold it, and dancing was mainly curtailed altogether outside of this area even at the edges of the very wide aisles by more of the roving "security" force. Needless to say it was more difficult to feel the spirit and the anointing which normally come with singing and embodying this kind of music. And then of course the fact that I paid decent money for that experience makes it even more insulting to the Spirit of Jesus.. sadly I won't be going back!

What's in the itinerary? It depends on the day. One of my favorites is Tuesday night's Dancing in the Street, where a large stage is set up downstage for--you guessed it--dancing in the street to a very good local cover band. This year I got to take a tour of two Coast Guard ships that were docked in the channel. My spouse was thrilled. If you're a music fan, there's nightly concerts, the majority of them being cover bands. On the second Saturday of the festival, there's fireworks, which people make sure they have a great spot for viewing as early as the morning of. The last thing I'll mention is the carnival with games, rides, and the kids who love them. Food-wise, there's a row of fair food trailers and a section of food trucks around the Elks Lodge off of Washington Street. Plus, just about all the local of the local businesses around downtown will gladly take your money. This summer New Holland Brewing Co. opened a pizza-inspired pinwheels kitchen, which appeared to be very popular with patrons of the festival. There's also plenty of opportunities for booze in the Social District as well as sweets, from ice cream to chocolates to Kilwin's fudge. I've attended the festival two years in a row, and I'll continue to come on the Dancing in the Street night. It's a great night of community and fun. I'll also try to check out the cardboard boat race, which takes place on the first Saturday of the festival. Should you come too? My vote is yes!

The museum explores the area's history, starting with the native Odawa, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi tribes, moving into the fur trade, pioneers, and into Victorian times. The displays are well done with many artifacts. My favorite part was the Victorian house as you can see into a bedroom, kitchen, and dining room. The second floor hosts two permanent exhibits - one about the coast guard and one about the Bastian and Blessing Soda Fountain, with a replica soda fountain counter. The rotating exhibit we saw was about Ferrysburg, a small town in the area. I didn't find that one as intriguing but I'm sure people from the area might connect with it a bit more. The museum is small but really well done for one of this size. Plus you can't really beat free entry! There isn't a ton for younger kids although they do have a small play room with books and some toys on the second level. I'd stop in here anytime I'm in the area as it looks like they are planning some updates.
