The vines at Montrose are among the oldest in Bordeaux. This means that they have extremely deep roots. Being in close proximity of the Gironde river, they have access to irrigation regardless of the weather. This normally results in tough, hard wines with a minimum ageing requirement of 15 years. Yet in hot years, Montrose produces the most astonishingly beautiful and balanced wines, capable of drinking in 10 years or ageing for another 50. This was the case in 2003. While other chateaux destroyed most of their crop, Montrose received 100 points from Parker and sold at $200 per bottle. Just FYI, Chateau Montrose was sold in 2006 for $0.92m per acre.

We attended a nearby cooking school, visited wineries including Ch Meyney and cruised the region 40 miles north, south and west. You can visit Pauillac including Ch. Lafite Rothschild and others from here. Outstanding small hotel for couples or families. The manager, Gilles is best of class proprietor who really cares about his guests.
