The…read morebotanical garden at the University of Basel is located right next to a public transit stop by Spalentor Gate, which makes it quite easily accessible. I was surprised to learn that it's one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world! There are multiple greenhouses to explore and some nice outdoor areas to look at. There's one greenhouse that is quite large and it feels like you're walking through a jungle when you're exploring it. It even has a glass spiral staircase where you can go up and get a better view of the flora. There were several birds inside this greenhouse also and it was fun trying to spot them. I think that it's wonderful that the university offers this experience to anyone who wants to visit. Definitely check it out if you're in Basel.

But don't be afraid. There's no street with a lot of traffic. In contrast, it is quite silent and romantic. I recommend you to admire the different kinds of flowers and plants. They are said to be imported from countries all over the world. Apart of taking long walks, it's quite fun sitting on a bank observing the walkers or the playing children. If you like drinking a cup of tea or coffee, there're various coffee shops. Of course, you shouldn't forget to taste the Alsatian specialities.

On our way north (to the UK) we needed a quick stop and looked for something nice and quiet for our…read morebreak. So we decided to visit the Chateau with its gardens. There are some free parking spots along the road, where we left our car. It was a Saturday and the village very quiet. So was this chateau and park. Almost didn't find the entrance to it, it's a bit hidden in the surrounding walls. Entrance fee is 5 Euros - there was nobody there though, so we left the money in the money box at the entrance where you also can find some infos and info sheets. The oldest wing of the chateau dates back to 1703 and since 1874 it's in the hands of the same family. The park/garden consists of two sections: The french style garden with 1.5ha and the english style garden with 10ha. It was nice to stroll around the french gardens. With statues, fountains and nice plants and formations all around. Some benches to rest your legs as well. After we went to explore the english gardens as well, some really nice hidden details can be found there. Only a handful other visitors were here that day. A really relaxing experience. Of course it's not the biggest chateau and garden. But very lovely. And if you want something off the beaten tourist track, then this place is worth a look.
