Chateau Cos d'Estournel has a long and distinguished history as a Bordeaux wine property in the St. Estèphe appellation that is as interesting as the estate's unique architecture. Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, gave his name to the estate after founding in 1811. The tour of the facility was the most impressive of six Chateaus in St. Estèphe. The barrel room was enormous and there was a glass walkway over the barrels. The walkway led to the library vault where bottles from the late 1800's were still being held. The woman providing the tour was gracious and informative. Since the chateau sells all their primary wines to brokerage firms as futures, there was only about a 10% holdback of any vintage. Therefore, no sales to the public. Ratings normally run between 92 and 95 for their primary label which sells for over $150/bottle. Yes, we were drinking those vintages. We were able to purchase the second label (Goulee) from 2012 for a pedestrian price.
This is a must see chateau. read more
