I had never even seen a shooting star before. 25 years of rotations, passes through comets' paths, and travel, and to my memory I had never witnessed burning debris scratch across the night sky. Church's Chicken employees were hunched over the deep friers. A co-manager named Jeffrey slowly beat on a cash register, cursing, veins throbbing, mumbling into the void space like he was trying to resurrect the dead. Community College drop-out Carver tapped patiently on the drive-thru counter, waiting for his cue. White pearls of discounted warehouse fluorescent light swam over their faces. A lazy blinking deep frier light spilled artificial constellations inside the aluminum cove of the vent hood. The asbestos-filled skeleton of the facility ate one end of South Padre Island Drive. A homeless man's bones and stray heroin needles laid beneath. I stared entranced, soaking in Church's Fried Chicken, chiseling each sense into the best functioning parts of my brain which would be the only sound system for the material for months. The faded lamps along the walls of the worn-down facility bled upward into the grey ceiling tile sky, which seemed as strikingly artificial and perfect as a wizard's cap. The aroma of fried chicken ascended repeatedly. "God dammit Carver," Jeffrey yelled like his dying words. "The health inspection is today, where is your f****** hair net?" The trained critical part of me marked the similarity to Col. Sander's 2 Piece Dark Meat Combo. The human part of me wept in awe. The lower-middle class surrounding me held their breath in communion (save for the drunken few shouting "Coupon!"). Suddenly, a rise of beeping and childish wails swept unfittingly through the crowd. The fried okra was certainly momentous, but wasn't the response more apt for, well, "Mashed Potatoes?" I looked up. I thought it was fireworks. A teardrop shot from Carver and disappeared behind the facial hair where the syrupy leftovers of last night's meal crawled. Church's Chicken had the heavens on their side. For further testament, I suffered auto-debilitating accidents in the same week, in different parts of the country, while eating Church's Chicken Biscuits in our respective Japanese imports. For months, I feared eating while driving, as I'd feared passing 18- wheelers after nearly being crushed by one in 1990. With good reason, I suspect Church's Chicken to possess incomprehensible powers. The evidence is only compounded with their South Padre Island Drive location-- the rubber match in the chain's legacy-- a chain which completely obliterates how fast food, and Church's Chicken themselves, will be considered. Even the heralded KFC has been nudged down one spot in Valhalla. Popeye's makes fried chicken childish. Considerations on its merits as "food" (i.e. its food critic fodder potential, its sides, and its hooks) are pointless. Comparing this to other albums is like comparing an aquarium to blue construction paper. And not because it's fried or boiled or mashed. Classifications don't come to mind once deep inside this expansive, hypnotic world. Ransom, the philologist hero of C.S. Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet who is kidnapped and taken to another planet, initially finds his scholarship useless in his new surroundings, and just tries to survive the beautiful new world. This is an emotional, psychological experience. Church's Fried Chicken tastes like a clouded brain trying to recall an alien abduction. It's the taste of a facility, and its leader, losing faith in themselves, destroying themselves, and subsequently rebuilding a perfect entity. In other words, Jeffrey hated being Jeffrey, but ended up with the most ideal, natural Church's Chicken record yet. Menu Item #4 opens like Close Encounters spaceships communicating with Cajun Chefs of Lore. As your mouth decide whether the tastes are coming or going, Carver's Cuisinarted skills struggles for its tongue. "One second ma'am," Jeffrey belts in uplifting sighs. The first-person mantra of "That will be $4.79" is repeated until the line between Jeffrey's mind and the listener's mind is erased. read more

Ordered the family meal with two sides, they proceeded to make us wait for 15 minutes for the bread. After pulling off we realized they left our fries. They did not let us in and made us wait in like for 20 more minutes making our food get cold. Terrible service and mediocre food. would not recommend. read more

I know it seems like am a glutton for punishment as I keep returning here for fried chicken but hey it's Corpus, not many choices. I love fried chicken and when Church's is good, it's pretty good. That's the problem with most fast food places around here, it's hit and miss. Well I'm too pleased to report that the Chicken today was most definitely a hit. I got the three piece dark and it was delicious, hot and fresh. Big pieces cooked to perfection. I was too happy. I wanted to go back and get more while the getting was good but didn't. I so hope they are trying to improve on their quality and it was not a fluke. It's the one in the bluff. Now I gots to go back to see if I was just lucky or what. Waited well over 20 minutes for my food just to have them mess my whole order up and have to wait another 20 minutes.

Worst service ever waited over 30 min and ended up getting a refund . And going to taco bell avoid this place at all cost.

Always takes too long even when you're the only car in line.Should not be taking 20 min for an apple pie :(

I had my first visit here after almost a year in Corpus Christi and it was a pretty good experience. The staff was great, the food was hot, and it was quick. There are no specials in the windows like I was used to in San Antonio, so you will need to go to Church's website for coupons (the staff confirmed that they take them at this location). My gripe is that like many Church's Chicken locations, this location was out of spicy chicken. Over the years I have heard every excuse imaginable as to why spicy is not available, but I am going with the theory that it is too much work, and the location managers don't care. Might be time for an app like the McDonald's ice cream machine site, so we know when spicy is available. read more

Dirty inside. Male employee (cook) kept asking my wife where she worked, what she did for work etc... Making inappropriate comments even after she asked him to stop. Very creepy. His clothes were filthy yet he was cooking the food, going out to the parking lot, going back into the store to cook. DO NOT GO. She said it made her feel creepy and she would never go back. When she got home instead of the family chicken tenders she ordered, she got a box of legs and thighs which we do not like, that's why she ordered tenders. Will never go back Wish I could rate a negative number. read more

Okay, I'm just going to say it. Fast food places should stick to what they know and quick "reinventing" stuff just to be trendy. McDonald's should not be doing breakfast tacos and Church's should NOT be doing waffles! When I worked at Church's (this location even - some 30+ years ago), they had one item on the menu, CHICKEN. And they did it well......very well, actually. Yeah, I know, time's change and a company needs to be flexible with the times but, when you can't make something good, then you should go back to your roots. I tried the "new" Chicken & Waffle bites. I had never had chicken and waffles before and I can safely say I STILL haven't had chicken and waffles. Waffles should not crumble apart when you bite into them. These did - they were that dry. The fake maple flavoring did not improve it any and the "maple butter" that comes with it just compounds how bad the flavoring is. The chicken strips were small and only made better with the cream gravy that came with them. I also happened to taste one of their Boneless Wings with the "sweet & spicy" sauce. While the wings were crunchy, tender and juicy, the sauce was anything BUT spicy.....even tasted more like burnt BBQ sauce! So, yet, another experiment gone bad. The only thing that hasn't changed is their coleslaw; still just as good as I remember. So, if I ever make it back to Church's, I think I'll just stick to what they (hopefully) do best and order the chicken. read more

I stopped for lunch here while in town for my daughter's twirling event. My son wanted Church's chicken tenders for lunch & I ordered the same. They have the best fast food chicken tenders at Church's! Even better than most non-fast food restaurants. I was very impressed with the staff here... Very courteous, professional & friendly! read more

The drive-in was broken, a sign says "drive up to the window and order." Well, I pull around and the guy in the window is having a long conversation with the driver in the van at the window. He's not taking an order...he's having a conversation. So I pull around and go inside...it's got a line due to the drive in situation. Three people in front of me order and when I get to the register..the guy says "just a moment' and turns around and goes into the back. Well, for five minutes I watch with relative horror the way guys without hair cover are over the food and one of the fry-geeks grabs an order of gizzards or something I would probably never order and dumps them BACK into the grease!! Double fried whatevers turned my stomach! So, guy walking away from the register with a line waiting to order...strike one. Double frying anything...strike twenty. NO THANK YOU. My money will go to some place that adheres to health codes and common sense. read more

The churches chicken in flour bluff is the absolute worst! I never leave without a 30+ min wait! They usually mess up my order. And if that is not bad enough they are rude! I have never had a good experience here weather it is lunch or dinner. Sorry, but this is a place to skip! read more
