This was for carry out. Unfortunately, when I stayed in it was different. First, the breakfast panini was average at best. What the owner called sausage I would call a hotdog slit to use on panini. ( I have been in UK over 2 weeks and had many sausages) But the biggest thing is the wife. She was very curt. First, telling me, if they get busy, I would need to move a small table back I had moved into mine to work. I am always cognitive of need for seats when I use a larger area and yield accordingly. Felt like she was almost watching me the entire time. just a bad vibe. then I got another coffee and 2 Cannoli's to go and she rang it up along with my breakfast and first coffee which I already paid for. Her husband then said he couldn't confirm I paid although he rang me up. they corrected it but again, she seemed put off. so, I brought up my credit card account and showed them I did pay for the first round. I would only recommend this place for takeout or sit at outside tables if female owner is there. unfortunate as my first two carry out visits were so nice and the other locals there were so fabulous and engaging.

The door isn't labelled well, but I'm a trailblazing type and wasn't hampered. The outdoor seating, which is really close to the river and bridge and was where I really wanted to sit, is closed at this time of year. It was a gorgeous day; however, they gave a good reason, May flies. The waitress I had was polite, and she was quick to bring me a drink, served with a lemon. I ordered garlic grossini(?) and a lasagna. To really test an Italiano Ristorante, you should always order the lasagna--if their lasagna is no good, chances are the rest won't be that good either. Kudos to the wait staff... though I ordered a Coca Cola, the couple sitting near me ordered red wine. The waitress asked them if they'd like to taste the wine before they bought the bottle... classy and consumer oriented. Kudos, Bella Italia, kudos. So, the dishes came really fast. It was almost too fast, but since I was in a party of 1, that was fine. They were excellent--by far the best Italian food that I've had in the United Kingdom. The lasagna was at probably 6 layers: two noodle layers, two sauce layers, a creamy ricotta/soft cheese layer, and a mozzarella layer dressed with fresh herbs. It was really good lasagna, and the portion was large. The garlic bread was surprisingly similar to traditional American style breadsticks... topped with a garlic pesto that was quite amazing. The dishes were quite salty, but I don't mind. The price tag was a little high, but it was a fancy eat-in joint in a premiere location. Not bad after all.

And I am an American, from the Midwest, and I have never had better pancakes in my life than these ones in Durham, of all places. They are to die for. I am dead. They are also enormous, and no normal human could finish a full stack. They are truly the tallest pancakes I have ever seen. How do they achieve this height? It's magic, I tell you. They are divine. I've also had a really gorgeous springy salad of aparagus, potatoes, ham, rocket, and poached egg - but just stop reading this and get the pancakes. Super cute rustic atmosphere, and be prepared to wait if you aren't there right when they open. It's worth the wait, if you haven't already gathered that.
