Tonight we stepped foot into one of our all-time favorite spots in Tuscaloosa -- Chuck's Fish. Us locals know the drill: if Bama's on the road or it's a holiday weekend, that's the sweet spot. Any other time, you might as well pack patience in your pocket, because you'll be waiting a minute for a seat, let alone a meal. But tonight? The crowds were at bay, the stars aligned, and the food... well, the food showed out. I kicked things off the only way a sane person would when gumbo is on the menu -- with a cup of that rich, smoky goodness. I don't care if it's 98 degrees outside or if I've already had dinner twice, I don't care if I'm north of I-10 this gumbo is on point. if Chuck's is serving gumbo, I'm ordering it. It's practically a reflex at this point. Then came the sushi -- the crown jewel of Tuscaloosa's sushi scene. Tonight's choice: Donkey On Crack. Yes, the name raises eyebrows, but trust me... one bite and you'll quit asking questions. This roll is loaded with mixed fish, deep-fried just right, and topped with flavor that'll make you consider standing and applauding. The only real struggle at Chuck's is deciding between this masterpiece and the legendary Screaming "O". It's like choosing between your kids -- you love them both, and one of them is definitely a little wild. For you newbies, here's the inside scoop: ask for the "other" sushi menu. Don't be shy. The regular menu is the handshake; the "other" menu is the full Southern hug. Order from it, and you'll be thanking yourself later. Or me. Either way, you won't regret it. All in all, Chuck's did what Chuck's does best tonight -- served up outstanding food with zero pretense and a whole lot of flavor. Tuscaloosa might be known for football, but nights like this remind you we've got some championship-level eats too.

"On the fence" is the best description of my opinion of this place. Allow me to explain... The idiom "on the fence" means to be undecided or neutral about something, particularly when facing a choice between two options. It implies a lack of commitment to either side and a hesitation to make a decision. I've been fortunate enough to visit this place under several different circumstances. My local friends will likely give me shit if they ever read this, but let's be honest, no one reads these. LOL I have been upstairs in the event space with a pre selected menu that was some of the worst food I've had. I'm sure the selections were made by my event planner, but it was the most hodgepodge random food selections ever. Everyone raved about it then and I was like, Huh? You serious? My subsequent visits were regular dine in type visits. All with varying results. Business dinners mostly.... The menu is all over the place as far as selections go. Pizza, sushi, fish, pasta, steaks, are all present. I feel like it's all just A-ok. It's not bad, it's just food if that makes any sense. There is no pizzazz. Nothing has ever really stood out as "wow, that's good". In fact, the toughest, driest fish I have ever had in my life was here. I had to use a steak knife to cut it and I swear it had cheese on it?!?!? WTF I came with the abbreviated UA family last time. C liked her sushi a lot she said, but I did not partake. Lil' A had a pizza and it was maybe the best thing I have had here. The crust was really good. The fries are good. I will get the hot honey pizza myself the next time I come. My coworkers swear this is the only great place to eat in T-Town. I refuse to believe it, so I will keep searching on my own. I almost forgot! The bread pudding is actually really good!!! Me and the kid almost fought over it. Yay! Bread Pudding for the last minute win! '25 - 59/111

BEST Sushi in town! Sushi is packed with flavor, freshness, and high-quality fish- you can't resist, but to order another roll! Sunset Roll is filled with yellowfin, avocado, and the special part? Zested with lime for the ultimate citrus touch making it perfection! (Look for it on the "Secret Menu"). Chuck's has become our go-to spot for date night, special occasions, or when visitors come to town! We're obsessed, and not mad about it!

This is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in Tuscaloosa. The service is always excellent and I love the ambiance in the building. The sushi is to die for. I tried the bang bang shrimp, miso soup, and cucumber salad for appetizers. I got an Amazon roll for my entree. Everything was to die for. Can't wait to come back next time I'm in town!

Really fresh Sushi. Unexpected but I would say the best in town if not the best for hundreds of miles. Very surprised to find Sushi this great in a small town. The service was great too. Noise was moderate and the place was decorated nicely.

Some of the best sushi you can eat. People rating this place are clueless. New age whackos I like to call them. This new generation doesn't exactly know cuisine. You gotta be 40 or older or you are clueless pretty much what I've come up with.

Notes: 1) been here once in the summer 2) did not park here 3) times may be different than listed Pros: 1) food is really good 2) service was great Cons: 1) ambiance was not congruent Rating: 4/5 I was told multiple times that this place had really good food, especially sushi. My friend was in town and we happened to stop by. It was really good! From the outside, it looks so fancy but the vibes seem to be all over the place. You don't have to be fancy to go here but you do have a pretty price to pay for the food here. The service from the door to the table was fantastic and you get to see the chefs preparing your food for you. It was a nice environment but the ambiance is a mix of like date night but also more upscale bar scene. The food was delicious! We ordered a seaweed salad, an order of salmon nigiri (2), an eagle roll, a red dragon roll, and a rock n roll roll. It was absolutely delicious! The fish was really fresh and the ingredients meshed really well together. There was not any one thing that was overwhelming nor was the sauces too overbearing. The seaweed salad was also super fresh! The nigiri was big and tasty! Overall, it was a great place to have a fancier, delicious dinner while also not being dressed too fancy! Food: Seaweed salad: 5/5, I personally love seaweed salad and this one hits the spot. I especially like the cucumbers for the crunch Salmon nigiri: 5/5, the salmon was fresh and the roll was plump, honestly pretty worth Rock n roll: 5/5, the fish was fresh and the eel was tasty Eagle roll: 5/5, the fish was fresh and the toppings worked nicely, I like smoked salmon Red dragon: 5/5, the fish was fresh and it was a nice roll

I mean, it's Alabama sushi. It's fine. If you're in town, this is a solid choice. If you eat supermarket sushi, this is probably better.

With a 20 mile hike ahead of me tomorrow, I figured loading up on carbs was not just justified, it was necessary. We have been here several times, and it truly never disappoints. Tonight was no exception. I did what I tend to do and over ordered. I went with a kids portion of spaghetti and meatballs along with my usual grilled salmon, and both were excellent. The portions were generous enough that I ended up taking about two thirds of the salmon home, which will make for a perfect Sunday lunch. My wife ordered the lasagna. While it was a bit on the soupy side, the flavor more than made up for it. It was still very enjoyable overall. The complimentary bread remains a highlight as always and is perfect for soaking up every last bit on the plate. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient, and the total bill came in under 50 dollars. In today's world, with gas pushing 4 dollars a gallon, that is hard to beat. We are leaving once again completely satisfied. Great food, a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, and none of the chaos from downtown. It makes you wonder if the crowds have figured out how good this place is yet or if they are all still on the other side of the river.

Me and C obliged, but should have turned around immediately. That shit doesn't work out well for me, so I just go with it now. Bright lights, hard floors, cheap everything, including the food. Stiff no on all. Busted ass kitchen you can see spilling into the hallway and dining room. We got food at the hotel bar later. I think a lot of people are being too nice or have no idea what good food should taste like, the appropriate texture certain dishes should be, and what decent food tastes like. Tuscaloosa is a good food dessert! Please step up and recommend a place to prove me wrong, because this place sucks for restaurants. The calamari was the worst I've had. Kiddo is used to it being at least ok. Bad. All of the entrees sucked as well. All of them. No real reason to keep bashing. Look at my pictures. Have a good day. ' 25 - excess

Second trip to River Restaurant starts off on a bad note. We arrived at 10:35 a.m. and the inside…read moredining room was only about half full with several empty tables, and the outdoor seating area, which we specifically requested, also had open tables. Still, we were told there would be a 15-20 minute wait. We waited about 35 minutes before seating. Make it make sense. That said, the restaurant sits right along the Black Warrior River, which offers a really pleasant view, especially from the patio. On a cool spring day like today, it's hard to beat outdoor seating here. Tuscaloosa is buzzing with football fans for the annual A-Day spring game, which adds to the energy around town. My better half ordered the shrimp and grits, and I went with the steak fajita bowl, minus the sunny-side-up egg. Even at my age, I can't do the runny yolk situation, I always ask for my eggs over hard. With that change, I'll say the fajita bowl jumped up to one of my top breakfast/brunch go-to dishes in town. Yes, I know it's technically brunch, but it was before 11 a.m., so I'm calling it breakfast. The shrimp and grits were solid, though the tails were still on the shrimp, which meant a bit of extra peeling at the table, my wife wasn't a fan of that part, but she still finished the dish and enjoyed it overall. Only minor gripe on the food side: ice seems to be a rare commodity here, I'd love a few more cubes in the water. But overall, the food was very good, the patio seating is absolutely the way to go, and the river view is fantastic.
