Have previously tried both Chubby Cattle and NikuX in Los Angeles, I was so excited to see a Chubby Cattle open in NYC. We did walk in for dinner for 2 people at 5PM, we arrived at 4:50 and were seated within 10 minutes. The staff was friendly, our waiter explained everything including the differences in menus. Everything is ordered either electronically on the screen at your table OR they have some options also available at a self service station. The restaurant is bright and clean, and made me feel like I was in Japan again. We opted for the silver tier, which still included plenty of meat options, as well as other dishes like sushi, soups, and other rice dishes. The meat was absolutely delicious, we enjoyed every cut that we had. The sushi was also pretty solid for a restaurant that prioritizes meat. Honestly, for the price, the quality was excellent, 90 minutes is plenty of time to eat your money's worth. My recommendation is to skip lunch that day to take full advantage of all their delicious options. I've been to quite a few AYCE Japanese and Korean BBQ places and this one easily has to be my favorite. The different cuts of meat all were soo deliciously prepared and fresh. It arrived looking so appetizing. I also was a huge fan of the carpaccio. We went with the silver package and it was more than enough offerings to pick from. A great deal for the quality we got. High quality ingredients and AYCE experience! You can pick between 3 different tiers, with more variety with each higher priced tier. You can order items off a screen at your table and also walk up to the second floor to get things like vegetables, soft drinks, milk tea (!), miso soup, and ice cream. We had a limit of 10 items per order (with a party of 5) with a minimum of 7 minutes of wait time between orders, but this was enough time for us to get our fill. The milk tea was delicious and had a strong tea flavor, which I loved. The staff were kind enough to set up a side table for us to hold to meat allowing more space on the main table. We also had an allergy to watch for and they were great about double checking everything and verifying contents of sauces and food. The food was all delicious, we went with the gold package and had good variety. I appreciated the ability to get the sides and drinks myself. I made a reservation well in advance for Valentine's Day dinner at Chubby Cattle and chose the highest-tier Diamond option because I was genuinely excited to try it. Unfortunately, this was an extremely disappointing experience. I want to be very clear: the wait staff were kind, attentive, and consistently trying to help. They are the only reason I am giving two stars instead of one. The issues were not caused by them. They were visibly doing their best in a situation that felt out of their control. That said, the quality of the food did not reflect the premium price at all. The meat quality was poor -- especially concerning for the most expensive tier. It was to the point where I felt nauseated and stopped eating. For a $200+ dinner on Valentine's Day, that is unacceptable. The grill repeatedly would not stay hot. Our waiter kept coming over to try to fix it, which I appreciated, but it was disruptive and made it difficult to cook anything properly. The menu is also very misleading about the sides and add-on bar. The self-serve areas were half empty, not regularly cleaned, and not refilled for the entire hour and a half we were there. Sauce options were limited, and there was very little available to enhance or compensate for the lack of quality in the meat. I should have taken the B health rating and the fact that the restaurant was half deserted by 7PM -- on what should be one of the busiest nights of the year -- as a warning sign. What makes this more frustrating is the website's strict "no refunds under any circumstances" policy. Policies like that give the impression that customer experience is not a priority. When diners are spending this kind of money, there should at least be some accountability if the experience falls far below expectations. I have had significantly better Korean BBQ in Florida for half the price. I went into this dinner excited and left anxious, disappointed, mildly sick, and out over $200. I truly hope management evaluates the quality and presentation, because the staff deserve better than having to uphold an experience that does not match the price point. read more

I liked that we could order more through a tablet at our table as well as the variety of sides offered on top of the meats. There were self-serve stations with milk teas/sodas, curry with a cool rice dispenser, salads, fruits, and desserts. Service was fine - the food came out pretty quickly though they forgot a few of our orders but we figured it was towards the end of the meal anyway so we just let it go. I wasn't a fan of how they kept advertising their membership and how they told us to leave a review that mentioned our server for the night. This is our 2nd times here and both times is AMAZING. EVERYONE here is super friendly and attentive. They opened at noon and everything was already set up, fresh and ready to eat. The skirt steak was def my fav; the Wagyu steak, top blade, & short rib were also up there. Our first time at chubby cattle - they had opened just a month prior. We chose the gold tier which included a selection of a a5 Wagyu menu item per person. Our personal favorite was the beef tongue platter. The foie gras nigiri was also amazing. Our server was sherry. They also have unlimited self-service station, sushi, seafood, signature dishes, and grilling foil to choose from. The ambiance stands out! It felt like you were in Japan for a sec. Really fantastic service and cleanliness for how many plates are coming and going from the table. Louie was our server and he was super helpful. He brought over house tea and veggies to pair with our meat. The whole staff is hustling around and taking care of multiple tables. Not really sure where they got their a5 Miyazaki beef from but it didn't taste anywhere close to as good as what I had in Japan. As in the beef was moist, but it tasted more like watery beef and not the rich umami that I've come to expect from high quality Wagyu. Dunno where they got it from or how they handled it considering I got sick. Happy to see if they can prove their beef actually came from a Miyazaki prefecture farm.
