clothes for the homeless!
Van D.

My aunts and I happened to be in the area so I took them here to visit this temple. There was a private lot so parking was easy, especially since we did not go on a Sunday. There were many nice statues outside of the temple and the Buddhist nun was very friendly and welcoming for us to go into the main hall. I'm actually used to kneeling on the ground, but they actually have rows of kneeling pads here for knee support. I guess that's good for the elderly!! My aunt were very excited. We paid our respects to Buddha and continued on with our New Years day!! On the bulletin, the temple had a sign up up list for volunteers who wanted to help with an operation to put together Clothes for the Homeless. Compassion is a part of the Buddhist teaching so it is important that we help others who are not as fortunate as us. This particular event takes place on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 9am and they are giving care packages to the homeless in Skidrow. These care packages include blankets, socks, sweaters and toilet paper. They are also fundraiser for money to buy food for the homeless as well. This isn't my main temple and I'm not sure how their Sunday prayers and other festivities are but I'm giving this place a 5 star for their philanthropy work. I would love to attend one of their volunteering events on day.

Dear chefs. Please don't make the food so spicy so everyone can eat. Love the authentic vegetarian food.

Ask the Community - Chua Dieu Phap

Are there still Vietnamese language courses on Sundays?

Yes, they just started classes a few weeks ago.

I recently obtained a motorcycle. Before I have my parents freak out and become upset, can I ask a Buddhist monk at this temple to bless it? If so, how?

Is this temple a non-profit organization?

Yes it is

Limited parking is available, but enough space for easy entry and exit. The monks conducted the ceremony for about 2-3 hours continuously. The lady staff were very nice and helpful in guiding the ceremony flow. There was an offering of prayers and food. It was a very warm and heart-felt ceremony. I was glad to be able to be here to offer my sincere prayers and final farewell to my aunt. We will miss you dearly. Thank you San Gabriel Valley Buddhistic Association for the wonderful facility and great service.

OK, came here on a visit after moving away from LA back to the East Coast. I love this place. I…read moredidn't realize I was coming the weekend after Ching Ming, and that's why it was so happening! On busy days like this, they have many volunteers to help direct traffic. I learned about their underground parking for the first time, it was so crowded! And they don't pressure you to join service. Be as active as you wish. I miss this airy temple with such positive vibes. The only drawback on this place (and it's ok, I don't need it), is they have no fortune sticks.

Happy Lunar New Year! I wish onto you, dear reader, happiness, love and prosperity this year!…read more The year of the horse is supposed to be a pretty bad year for my zodiac animal (not a horse). I don't practice Buddhism, but my mother insisted that I lessen my bad luck this year by bringing me to a temple to "An-Tai-Suay" (this is a verb. I think it means to ask my god "pu-sah" to protect my animal?) I'M TRYING! I'm no regular temple-goer, and I've only been to a few temples in my lifetime...but besides Shi Lai, this one has to be my favorite. It's spacious, peaceful, clean & well kept, beautiful, and full of helpful and friendly staff members who can try to explain things to you even if you don't understand (like me). The smell of incense fills most of the buildings' entrances and it really brought me a sense of peace and serenity. I can't really explain it well, but being here kind of made me feel like I had been lifted away from all of hustle & bustle of my day-to-day life and placed in a zen garden. Today, we wrote our family members names on a small card and hung it on a little lantern among hundreds of lanterns. Along with our names, we wrote/asked for happiness and luck this year, and to keep us safe. Then we went to "An-Tai-Suay" and I think they will be posting/hanging something with my name or something in one of the temple buildings for this lunar year. Although I don't normally go to Temples, this is a place I have really enjoyed being at. I do recommend anyone, buddhist or not, to come here at least once and experience this place. You don't have to wait for an unlucky year either.

In the past few months, I have learned more about their charity work and their dedication in support the community. They have been generously donated masks, face shield and KN95 masks to local groups to help families in need. All the canned food that were brought to the temple for blessings are being safely collected then donate to LA foodbank. We go to temple to seek for inner peace and by sharing our blessings, we found peace.

It is mainly street parking right on Atlantic Blvd or the side streets. El Portal Pl is a popular spot (plus there's a cool water feature). You can also access the rear entrance from El Portal Pl by following the small alley behind the stores. The rear entrance is clearly labeled with a sign in Chinese and the words "Buddhist Mission 527." This time around, we used the rear entrance since we parked on El Portal. When we arrived at the temple, the place was fairly busy with people making their prayers and offerings to the gods. Since it was the start of the New Year, people were also making their offerings to Tai Sui to prevent misfortune/disturbances and ask for peace and good fortune. Overall, the place is pretty busy. They don't have a great parking area as it is mainly street parking. It's not a very lavish temple, but it has a nice homely feel to it.
