During the summer of 2019, a local group of artists called Blend Creative Minds organized a return of approved graffiti art reclaiming a series of walls in Broad Ripple. Not since the "hey day" of a festival called "SubSurface" back in the early 2000's has there been a painting festival like this in Broad Ripple.
The primary couple behind the organization of this painting event, Erica Parker (Vivrant Thaang) and Rafael Caro (Rafiki), freely admit and give credit to the earlier festivals as inspiration to revive an opportunity for local artists to gather together and create a wall(s) of color and images to bring interest to a neighborhood.
For this event, four walls were selected and approved. The largest wall on the south side of 6265 Carrollton Ave (The Egyptian) was painted by six artists including one of the original SubSurface founders, Cents. Others included were Omen 74, Lucian Agape, Libre, Jane, & (Kyle) Stuffy who is with Creative Minds.
Adjacent to that wall is the two story east wall of the same building. It features art by Iznot, Kemp, Yorik, Cros (J), and Tusk One.
North of the alley and on the upper level of the building is an art piece referred to as "A City Full of Artists" which was painted by the Blend Creative Minds group.
A fourth location on the west end of the alley on the south wall of 801 Broad Ripple Avenue is a muted western mural by Bootleg Signs (Emily Gable).
The area around these pieces contains a number of other art installations including a piece that was part of the "46 for XLVI" SuperBowl mural project called "Swept Away".
Much of the remaining art is deteriorating since it was done in the SubSurface days. Blend Creative Minds hope to organize a future festival to replace those damaged images with fresh, new images to continue improving the neighborhood.
