Nativity, my camera could not focus quick enough, the words spelled Believe
Rachel W.

As a kid it was a yearly argument to get My Dad & Uncle to take my Cousins & I to the now defunct Candy Cane Lane in Ventura... Btw the kids usually won outu. (Read on for a clue as to what our Dads were trying to avoid .) It's nice to see that Oxnard residents have created their own Candy Cane lane, they truly put their heart and soul into creating a fun and engaging Christmas wonderland, from your traditional to the inventive , you will be overwhelmed with lights & sounds as some of the displays are interactive. Traffic of course is going to be jammed, so patience is key.. My suggestion would be to either find parking somewhere close by and walk the Lane so you are able to have a more personal experience, or drive slow, roll down your windows and take in the creative displays and worry about getting out of traffic later. Because frankly everyone else is probably thinking just like you. This is a great event to take visiting relatives during the Christmas season, children & grandchildren and quite frankly yourself.

PUT Oxnard on the map, y'all! Our Christmas Tree Lane ROCKS!!! Located close to downtown Oxnard, in the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District, along F & G Streets, north of Fifth Street, you're in for a treat if you make your way here! Lavish decorations fill the front yards of many of the houses here. It may appear like an ordinary, mild mannered neighborhood during the day, but as the moon glow begins, it turns into something awesome 'round here!!! The best time to come is the week leading up to Christmas Eve. That's when some of the houses even have live entertainers gettin' their croon on. Tons of people, all with a seemingly jolly demeanor, cruise the district with their sneaks or in the comfort of their car. It kinda has the Disneyland aura where everyone is happy and respectful of the people around them. Love that! Sometimes ya gotta be patient with street parking. Port-a-Potties are set up on the corner of 3rd St. & F St. behind Santa Clara Church. Here's a few family highlights... *144 F St. - Model Train RAILROAD: Fam FAVE! The young squires could stand and watch this ALL night! *205 F St. - Oxnard Original Nativity scene *100 F St. - Mickey Mouse extravaganza *105 F St. - Gingerbread Man Theme *G St. Snow Houses between 3rd & 4th St *G St. Circle *228 F St. - The Peanuts Gang Merry Christmas! May you be blessed with a wonderful holiday season ;)

My favorite was the house with the dog theme, they even had pup Christmas carols playing! Some residents also get involved as part of the experience. One was driving an old style classic truck with a Christmas tree and Santa in the trunk bed. Another was dressed as Santa riding around on a Segway wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. There were a few food vendors, from residents setting up a stand to sell cookies and hot cocoa to food trucks. We started right as the sun set and it was the perfect time as there was less crowd. Although some houses had not turn on their display at that time we were able to see it on the way back to the car. I find it much more enjoyable to walk than to drive. You get an up close view and can really appreciate the efforts that is put into it.

It was overall so clean too with trash cans lining the neighborhood. There is so much foot traffic and car traffic here so that was a surprise! I really loved seeing the canned drive container too! Thanks to the Gemini community for opening their neighborhood to us all! My only suggestion would be portapotties but I'm sure that would be an added expense. Maybe if it was token driven to help offset costs?

This year I decided to support and check out Growing Works nursery in Camarillo, CA. I've driven by this spot many a times and have been wanting to come in. This nursery is closed to the public expect to a few public days a month. This nursery which is ran through Turning Point Foundation is near and dear to my heart because of the kind of work I do and how they support women with mental health and employment needs. Coming here for Farm Fay was a blast! Not only could I support by buying their flowers and succulents in the back nursery area - they also had a vendor market where I was able to snag some candles and crochet goodies for a friend. All of the booths were local artisans and it was nice to be able to support them. There were a few food vendors so I grabbed a hotdog and listened to the live music. Weather was perfect, the vibes were friendly and cheery, it was absolutely the perfect way to spend my Saturday morning. Love that our county participates so actively in Farm Day and makes it such a big, awesome event throughout the county. I'll be an ongoing supporter and participant. That's for sure :)

We went to five farms. One grew celery and attendees could take home entire heads of celery picked just that morning. I'd never seen celery so big. They also had various vegetable seedlings. We also went to a flower farm and walked through the fields while learning about this worker owned business. My favorite was the Sa'aliyas Ranch at Pacific High School. This hands-on ranch provides students with an education in current organic agriculture practices. They had a cool drone that is used to spray plants. They also have an aquaponics building with koi in tanks (with windows so they can watch the people) to create the nutrients for the plants. A fun day, despite the rain.

So, it's best to grab brunch or visit nearby sites like Serra Cross or the Ventura Pier before you shop. There are free parking lots in the area, but by the time we headed over around 11:30 am, all the free spots were taken, so we used the metered parking which was pretty reasonable. Mission San Buenaventura is located on Main Street and offers services. The church is beautiful and Sunday service was very well attended. You'll also find many thrift and antique stores with reasonable prices. I loved that Main Street included a variety of stores and restaurants without including the cheesy and touristy gift shops. We had an enjoyable lunch at Immigrant Son caffe, purchased some sodas at a really cool candy store called Rocket Fizz and visited Very Ventura, a gift shop with a nice collection of Ventura related gifts. I purchased some stickers for my Yeti and a hat.

As I had never heard of the place I guessed it was a new business. Well, I guessed wrong. I was surprised to learn the place is celebrating 7 years in business. Before visiting Palm & Boy I checked out the photos on their Yelp page. What a beautiful location! I was like, that doesn't look like Ventura to me, that looks like Santa Barbara, wait, did I sign up for a Santa Barbara event? I checked the address. East Main Street, Ventura. Then I clicked on the map. Ah, the place is in Downtown Ventura. That's why I never heard of Palm & Boy: I really don't spend much time Downtown. For sure, on my own, I would have never have found out about Palm & Boy. So I've gotta say Thank You to Yelp for the invitation to this event! The store is located in a really beautiful courtyard, accessed right off Main Street. It really felt more like Santa Barbara than Ventura to me. Like a Paseo Nuevo vibe. I loved the setting. Attendees were afforded their choice of one drink and one food item off the menu. I decided to try a Chai Latte and an Acai Bowl (the Stoke). I have to say, that was one fantastic Chai Latte. Best chai latte I've had locally. I would definitely hit that again! The Stoke acai bowl was wonderful too. What I liked about it was that it was not overly sweet. In fact, it was rather tart. Like it made you kinda pucker up. That tart! And I really really liked the granola they use in their acai bowls at Palm & Boy. Good stuff! So, yeah, another really great YES event, showcasing a wonderful local business that I had never heard of and most likely never would. Thank You for hosting the event Palm & Boy! I look forward to many future visits. Thank you, too, to Yelp for the invite, and to our CM, Jara S. for putting together another fun event! Mikey C says: Palm & Boy, Five Stars all day!
