The congregation was friendly, and I really enjoyed learning about God's word. I thought I had found my church. However I will continue to search for a spiritual home. Today's sermon with pastor Jim Nicodem was upsetting as he went on about his political views. Not fact but his opinion. He did this one other time and I decided to let that go. This is a time to build bridges, not divides. He should know better. We can do better. The younger pastor was always uplifting (can't recall his name)

In addition to the regular Sunday services (which I don't attend), they have movie nights, eating…read moregroups, fair trade craft fairs, etc. in addition to regular "deepening" groups, which is a group of folks meeting with a common interest for a couple of hours for X weeks. I participated in a group that explored food traditions of different religions, culminating in a seder with appropriately PC language. They have probably the smallest kitchen I've ever seen in a church (the place is a converted Elks club), a decent sized sanctuary, a small library collection of religious themed books, a multipurpose room and childcare rooms. The people are welcoming and the minister is good with names. Like most UU churches there are plenty of opportunities for social action. UU churches tend to be very rational or very touchy-feely; the vibe I get from this minister is more touchy-feely.

If I could I would…read morehave given it a 5 star rating AND a 1 star rating but since that can't be done I gave it three stars. This is why: Their highest quality is acceptance. So many people there have great hearts. If you are into community this place is for you. But UUism is a double edged sword. The church says it is in search of truth but specifically states that it is in search of truth, not Truth. So at the outset it has preconditioned the search by a denial of the Absolute. It is like saying even though something you want may be in a dark alley you will only look under a streetlamp! The church prides itself on rationality but that is only a pretense. It has a fear of discovering that, as Hamlet says, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Their philosophy isn't even philosophy (love of knowledge) but provincialism, close-mindedness. So if you want a social group that limits itself to justice rather than to justice and its source, this is the place for you. The church states that it has no creed but principles. Is it then really a church or a social group based on principles? By not having a creed but acting like a church it has become a breeding ground for atheism and secular humanism. The "church" states that you can have any belief you want but theism and atheism are not compatible. It is like having an animal rights group that allows animal abuse philosophy. The default dogma then is community which is the stated goal of the secular humanists and atheists. In fact in its non-theist/humanist study group the leader stated his hope for a future where all churches would simply be community--nothing supernatural. Although there are truly religious people in UUism it is somewhat of an "anti-church" where people who have had bad experiences in more traditional churches come. Sadly, they do not know that the choice they have is not between religious provincialism or atheism. The third alternative is Enlightenment, Realization, mysticism, the Perennial Philosophy of Aldous Huxley and Ramakrishna.
