My friends of other or no faith have always been welcomed with open arms, not hate, and have expressed they would be willing to return as a result. Their children's programming encourages thoughtful insight and questioning, their choir program seeks to engage and explore Christ through song, and the sermons pave a path towards a deeper relationship with the Lord. They offer a loving hand through life and seek to have their congregants develop both inside the church walls and outside. I especially adore their commitment to outreach and mission, helping all brothers and sisters in life.

Pastor Joe shares some of his toughest challenges and reminds us that all of our sufferings are the same in Christ. I learned to endure, and most importantly, to remain in the word of God. For example, the Trygve Lie Gallery is located here downstairs from the "church" and has a nice collection of Scandinavian art. On the main floor, there is a small food store featuring a whole range of foodstuffs from mother Norway. Upstairs there is a small library/reading room with a fairly impressive collection of books in Norwegian. With all of that said, I actually wasn't here for the art, which I think is the obvious draw for the non-Norwegian. Instead, I was here for the Norwegian installment of the European Book Club which meets monthly at cultural spaces all around the city. The reading room was perfect for a spirited discussion of Stig Saeterbakken's work. A kind member of the staff was so thoughtful and gracious that she prepared for us plenty of fresh Norwegian waffles and some freshly brewed coffee to accompany our discussion. The waffles were more pliant than I am accustomed to, and I loved the consistency. They were served with sour cream and raspberry jam. These were just delicious. It will be another year before I head back here for a book club discussion, but I think I will be back much sooner for a tour of the gallery and some Norwegian cookies -- yum!

I showed up for a random Wednesday buffet lunch, and met some of the most genuinely warm people I've run across in Manhattan. I'm not religious and I'm far too short and furry to be Norwegian, but the people running the lunch were unbelievably welcoming to a bunch of random dudes who just wanted to try some pickled herring. The food, for what it's worth, was also amazing: lots of fresh salads, a few varieties of pickled herring and canned mackerel, some fresh bread, baked salmon, gravlaks, and an interesting concoction that resembled jello with bits of shrimp, fish, and vegetables floating in it. It tasted way better than it sounds. You probably don't believe me. There's a small store and cafe inside the church that always offers coffee, waffles, and a few Nordic packaged goods. And the store always seems to be staffed by ridiculously friendly people, who seem wonderfully impervious to the bustling, indifferent culture that surrounds them in Midtown. Amazing.
