I searched many years to find a church home. I tried many denominations. I felt at home within the…read morewalls of this church. The music isn't quite traditional but certainly not contemporary. The songs performed by the choir and accompanied by the pipe organ stir my soul. The church follows a progressive ideology, which means I am accepted as a gay man. The pastor greets and hugs the congregation after service. There are also coffee and sweets after service where members can fellowship together. I like to compare house buying and church searching. Like in house buying when you walk into "home," you just "know." I knew this was the right church for me the moment I walked in. The music confirmed it. The Sunday morning service at 10am is the more traditional service. The service in the evenings at 5:30pm is in the contemporary style.

The church itself is a large, beautiful structure and the sanctuary has several different areas where you can sit, including a maternity room and 2 side rooms. Ive been going here most of my life, so this church is in a lot of ways like my second family. You also don't have to be a member to attend here; the doors are open to everybody.

This is a wonderful church and community. After my divorce, I had a difficult time finding a…read morechurch where I felt comfortable and accepted. A friend of mine, who is also a single parent told me about Bethel's child-friendly services. I went for a visit and felt immediately at home and welcomed. After a few weeks I decided to bring my kids to see how they felt. After a precious children's time during service where the preacher speaks directly to all the children at the alter, my kids joined the other children for arts, crafts and learning. Both of my children (ages 5 and 8 at the time) told me they loved it at Bethel and wanted to come back. For me, what I love about Bethel is the church's dedication to social justice issues. We celebrate pride day, actively work to help support local AFAC programs and constantly have the christian fundamentals of faith, love and charity in the forefront. The final clincher for me, however, were my children. I knew that if I found a church where they are happy, then we would go on a regular basis. All these things I have found at Bethel.

Today, a guy from there church approached our car and kind of just stared at us. We motioned that we were okay. We were literally sitting just talking minding our own business. This guy called the cops on us who told us we had to leave. Mind you, we weren't doing anything but keeping to ourselves. No where does it say private property or anything. In fact the have a nice playground and park area that seems open to the public. This is a church. Calling the cops on people sitting on their car. I can't imagine what they would would do to people who need help or are there asking for something. Completely turned off from this place. I thought churches were open to all. Guess not.

The congregation is welcoming to all people and accepts everyone just as they are. The history of the church is interesting as are so many places in this town. Rev. Kim is an eloquent speaker and a very caring Rector. She has been leading the church for more than 12 years. She was the first African-American female priest in Virginia. Jeremy is the Music Director and is very talented. His voice is heavenly and he plays a variety of genres of music. Sometimes we stick around after the service to hear the rest of the recessional and everyone will applaud like we attended a concert - the pipe organ is pretty fantastic! The church also provides community services and assistance through their thrift store (Columbia Pike Thrift Store), The Haiti Micah Project, food drives, Mother's Union and Samaritan Ministries. There is also support of the Virginia Theological Seminary students by having them as visiting preachers and special collections & offerings for scholarships. I also enjoy the many feast days, blessing of the animals and services held outside on the lawn. It would be nice if we had more churchgoers, the attendance can be sparse sometimes. There is room for volunteers in many areas and I bet you would be welcomed with open arms. The greatest need seems to be in the tech areas.
