I am constantly amazed by the things I have still yet to explore in the DC metro with Christ Church being one of them. I've past it a thousands times when in Old Town, but never have I had the opportunity to really just get out and explore its offerings. Finally after a long anticipated wait; I made time to see what it was about. I went inside the small, quaint church where they have many rows of pews within the one story main sanctuary. The pews all have doors on them and they're numbered on the outside of the doors. When you walk in late -- you're friend can send you a text and say, 'Hey! I am in pew #32". Saved. You'll be able to find them. Let's just hope this is never the case and that you are on time for church. The church was established when the Truro parish branched off from Pohick and Falls Church in 1764, and they established their own parish. It was once called the 'Church in the Woods' because back in the day when it was first erected; the church was far off from the main part of town where Alexandria started on its original 84 acres. As the city of Alexandria grew; the closer it got to the church. Bear in mind this church foundation has been here since 1767 being completed in 1773 in Palladian style. Notable members include George Washington and Robert E. Lee who baptized, confirmed, and a member here before joining the confederacy. Inside the church there are plaques indicating where both Washington and Lee sat when they went to service. Back then in order to fund the church -- they would sell off pew spaces to people who have their designated seating arrangement. GW and Lee essentially had their own assigned seats. GW wasn't there every Sunday. He primarily did business in Alexandria during the week, and preferred to be at home on Sundays to conduct business from home or enjoy the leisure activities of Mount Vernon. GW was not a permanent resident of Alexandria, but he did have a townhouse he stayed in if he didn't want to venture all the way back. Not to mention that to get to Alexandria from Mount Vernon took half a day's horse ride making it very difficult for him to have attended church every Sunday. He was also a vestryman for Pohick where he found himself occasionally too. Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill visited the church on January 1, 1942 to commemorate World Day of Prayer for Peace. In addition to FDR and Churchill, Mrs. Elanor Roosevelt accompanied them too. They have plaques of where they sat in the pews as well. I sat where Churchill sat, and I got chills! One notable thing you'll see is that the church has no vandalism to it like Pohick had suffered during the Civil War. The reason Christ Church escaped any wrath of the Civil Was was because it remained open as a church during the entire war. War chaplains and generals worshipped here keeping it fully functional and intact. It was never converted into anything for war purposes. Outside you will see a very old cemetery around Christ Church. It is neat to see the old grave stones scattered around the church, however, they're not in their original places of where they laid with the deceased. In the Civil War era, grave markers were removed and stacked elsewhere. Again in 1987 when the church was adding additional buildings on the property; they removed the gravestones to make way for the new parish halls. The deceased who were buried in the church yard in caskets have since gone back to soil. Literally dust to dust. Since the early 1800s, people have not been allowed to be buried on the church grounds due to ground acidity. The only thing that can be done is to have their ashes sprinkled on the ground after cremation which is still allowed today. Christ Church has a rich history that is meant to be explored. It has a congregation of 2,400 that is worth visiting. It is LGBT friendly and open to all who want to worship. It is simply a beautiful church with a simply elegance that can't be explained unless you see it in person. I truly did enjoy my visit and looking forward to return for service.

Beautiful church that George Washington and Robert E. Lee attended. It's amazing to see the pews where they worshipped, and you can sit in them. Only reason for four stars is that when I asked the tour guide questions about certain things, I got a lot of "I'm not sure" replies.

Lee and George Washington both attended the church and I do believe some Presidents over the years have gone as well.

This church claims they are a family, that they are there for their members no matter what. IT'S A…read moreCOMPLETE LIE! I joined this church in spring, 1998. At that time, I was living in an abused woman's shelter with my 4 small children, overcoming an abusive marriage. So I was a single parent. At that time, off and on throughout the years, I would ask the church for assistance with utilities or food, etc. because we fell on hard times from time to time. I paid my tithe and offering faithfully, and when I was able, I would give a little extra to show my gratitude. This was when Pastor Wright was senior pastor. But then, in 2009, one of my daughters became pregnant. She wasn't married yet, she eventually married my grandchild's father, but people in this church chastised her and ridiculed her for having a baby out of wedlock. From that time until now, she refuses to go to church any more. When she told me what happened, I confronted the few individuals that said these negative things to her, and I too stopped going to this church for 10 years. But after my car accident in 2019, surprising the church helped me financially and I was grateful. So I started attending again. Fast forward to the present, on September 26th, I and my son were in the middle of preparing to move into a new residence. Another home owner, whom we were initially going to rent from but changed our minds, refused to give our security deposit back. I contacted HUD an about this, and they made this individual give our money back. The day we were supposed to sign our lease and get our keys, the lady didn't give our money back as agreed. For two days, she would string us along. Finally, on October 1st, she refunded our money, but the owner of our new home got tired of waiting, and changed his mind. We lost our house. Unfortunately, it was too late when we received the refund. Long story short, I asked the church to please help us with the security deposit before this happened, and I even said I'd refund the money once we received the money back or we would lose our new home. The church admin pastor told me that because the church helped me and my family off and on for several years, they refuse to help us any more. I pleaded for their help and stressed the severity of the situation, that we are in jeopardy of becoming homeless. It fell on deaf ears. So we lost our home and have been homeless since October 1st, 2024. I even contacted a few members who lived near our old residence, and asked if my son and I could stay with them for a week or two, just long enough to get our bearings and secure another property or at least figure out our living options. They all told us no. No one has checked on us (I'm talking about the pastoral staff - senior pastor, elders, etc.) and asked how we're doing. It's November 2nd, and my son and I are living in our car. This church would rather see us living in our car than help us. Needless to say, I cannot support a church who would allow their members to live in their car than help them. I don't care how many times they've helped me in the past. Our situation was/is severe, and they could care less. But they'll keep us in prayer.......(that's the response I get). There are a few members who I know personally who have checked on me and my son, but the pastoral staff, they could care less about our well being. That really hurt my heart that they treat their "family members" in this way. It really opened my eyes and gave me a serious reality check. So just know that this church is not what it's cracked up to be. If you want a show, by all means go, you'll have a good time. But don't hold your breath if you need help other than prayer..... Needless to say, I've stopped going to church period. And I'm sure they'll read this review and try to justify their decision, but at the end of the day, when they face Jesus, they'll have to explain their actions to Him....... Hope this helps in your decision to go or not

I found hearing babies cry and kids running around distracting and annoying. There was a time I was once that kid who had a short attention span who probably annoyed someone else. The circle of life is complete. The Catholics is very much the same as I remember it when delivering the message of Christ. The monotone voice of the priest and the repeative music except for the end song wasn't memorable for me. To me, church should be memorable as well as spiritual and I did not feel it with this church. The standing to sitting to kneeling to standing got old real fast. You might be thinking, "that's the way it's done buddy boy." Well this isn't necessarily true. Nevertheless, each holy place is it's own and I can appreciate the look of the church. The fact that there is Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Filipino and Black prayers to read was most enlightening. I did begin to wonder if the Communion  was going to happen. I wondered if health regulations from Covid-19 would change they way the Church does this, but from what I saw, various members of the church pasted out the body of christ without gloves. Whether or not their hands were sanitized or not, I can not say. I found this a little disturbing. I did not see anyone drink the blood of Christ other than the priest. I watched him wipe down the cup, but I was still thinking about germs if that is all that is down between services. More goes on that I don't see, but my mind went there when I saw bare hands touching the body of Christ without gloves. As a kid I remember being offered the body of Christ and The Blood of Christ. How times have changed. At the Journey Church, the body of Christ and The Blood Of Christ are individually wrapped in one small container. They offer the choice of gluten free body and blood of Christ too. I found this to be more acceptable than the ladder. I saw three people people of African American decent, but that is about all. When visiting different churches, you see different things. This church isn't bad, but I can't say it is my cup of tea. I don't know if we will be back to this Church or not. I guess I will find out next week. I am not as spiritual as my wife wishes me to be, but learning new things and seeing new churches are always fun to me now. Not so much when I was a kid.

I have a biased view, as a member for about 17 years and as a former active elder at this church…read more So keep that in mind. If you are looking for a church whose message confuses God-worship for a certain political viewpoint, or the attractive but false message that man is the measure of all things and man can solve his own problems without divine involvement, you should look somewhere else. And, if you are looking for a church that minimizes humanity's ability, whether through honest science or through social benevolence, to improve his own lot, this isn't the place for you. This church strives to address not only the spiritual, but also the material needs that exists in its surrounding community and throughout the world. Faith is not expressed through blind commitment but by by verifiable actions. Churches are imperfect representations of God's kingdom on Earth because they are all made up of people whose sin and whose moral failings qualify them for exclusion from that kingdom. And also qualifies them for God's grace. I know this church well; I know its warts. And this is a 5-star review. Five stars, because this is what I'm most confident in saying above all: If you want to hear about the gospel of Jesus Christ and the salvation he offers to every person alive through accepting what he did on the cross as his free gift to you as the way to eternal happiness, you will not be disappointed. I am a Christian who unashamedly believes that the Old and New Testaments are God's word. So I can offer no higher praise than this.

The church body is filled with singles, families and young military families, and very transparent. NO STUFFY PEOPLE here.
