Wonderful food, but lacking in atmosphere. This was a first visit to Chortke and I usually don't offer a review on a restaurant unless I've visited a few times but our dinner companions had been here before so based on their comments as well, we'll consider this a second visit. The food is very good, though at times a bit strong on the sauces. The crispy prosciutto with fig was excellent. And quite frankly, a meal into itself. Likewise, the tempura spring rolls were an interesting take on an Asian staple and definitely worth trying. The octopus, well, it was good, but considerably overpriced. And given that we shouldn't be eating these wonderful creatures anyway I regret ordering this appetizer for both economic and moral reasons. My bad. My three dinner companions had the scallops and tasting my wife's, I can concur that they were wonderfully cooked, spiced, and quite filling. I opted for the spirulina tagliatelle. The pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly though I found the sauce it was swimming in to be a bit overpowering at times. I tasted less saffron bure blanc and too much lemon. Wine list was good and the service was very attentive. BUT, the atmosphere was akin to that of a cafeteria. The food deserves 5 stars, but the ambiance is definitely a three. If you're with a large table that is loud and doesn't care, then fine. But it's definitely not the place for any sort of romantic or relaxed dinner. Love the ambience of the restaurant as we stepped in. The chairs were so comfy with plush cushions, off to a great start. There was plenty of free parking outside, and it was quite easy to score a reservation at 6:30 PM on the same day, a Tuesday. Probably could have just walked in too, it wasn't too busy. I felt my expectations were high given they were #1 on Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat in Rochester in 2022. I was under the impression this would be a $$ experience as indicated, but from looking at the menu, it seemed more upscale at $$$. That's fine but that also raises the expectation more on the food and customer experience. A lot of the reviews mentioned combo #1, but I didn't see any of those options, at least for dine-in. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing or maybe their prices have changed after their renovation. Our server wasn't really helpful in identifying and describing the popular items on the menu. We ended up ordering the chicken chop and lamb chops and perhaps we should've ordered something else. We thought the chicken chop would be diced chicken maybe even more like chicken on the rocks with some sauce, but it was actually a piece of chicken, albeit nicely cooked (not dry) but certainly different from what we expected. The lamb chops were also a little on the blue side (rare). We also added the cauliflower under the essential section. It all tasted fine, but the flavours weren't too memorable for me. I'm not familiar with Persian cuisine and probably just prefer more intense flavours from other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food. Though we thought the Persian mille feuille dessert (not on menu, $14) and the complimentary bread were really good. The dessert was interesting and nothing I've had before. While we spent over $100 USD, we didn't feel it met our expectations, and we weren't left feeling eager to return. Maybe our expectations are simply higher as a tourist from out of town. What really made this more of a 3-star 'okay' experience as opposed to a 4 was that we felt the server did his job but made us feel rushed, asking to clear our plates before we even finished. I hadn't been to Chortke since they served kabobs during lunch, and I loved it then. I observed that they had completely redesigned the place and it is so beautiful now with the high ceilings, recessed wall niches and basket lighting. Chortke is definitely a high-end restaurant now, and it's only open for dinner. I had some of the best scallops I've ever had at a restaurant. The octopus appetizer was also bursting with flavor. This would be a lovely place for an anniversary dinner or special occasion. I highly recommend it! read more

Hidden gem! Ate here with a large group for a business dinner and we tried nearly everything on the menu and it was all fantastic. Some of the stand outs: scallops, Brussels and cauliflower, the flatbread pizzas, tomahawk steak and the pork chop! I wouldn't go here if you're in a hurry but rather a place to enjoy a delish meal and good company. Service was great, very attentive to all our needs. The place is absolutely incredible from the ambiance, and o the staff, and the food! The owner is also so sweet and you can tell how proud he is and is always striving for improvement. Sadly it is a little bit expensive to visit often, but is soooo worth the splurge! I had dinner with two dear friends here a couple weeks ago! It is unassuming, in a strip like mall and a location I wouldnt typically choose to eat, but was a recommendation from a very talented work colleague. The food blew me away. We had two appetizers, the spring rolls and the beef keftedes. The beef would order again and recommend. I had the scallop entree and both of my fiends got the pork chop. All were cooked to perfection and delicious. The real reason I am here writing about this restaurant is the transformative dessert, that I am still talking about two weeks later. I only ordered it on a recommendation and confirmation by our waiter as the signature dessert of this restaurant, that is was delicious. I am a chocolate or ice cream must be involved for it to be considered a real dessert, but the raspberry pistachio served with kenafeh and rose oil, I believe. I only had three bites, but would have eaten it myself! The dessert is rose forward, which, i thought I would hate, but with the sweetness of lhe pistachio cream with the tart raspberry! last time I came here was feb '22 and had no idea they renovated. can I just say it is 1000% better. the atmosphere is so inviting and warm. the service is friendly, as soon as we walked in we were greeting and sat right away. walking through it felt like another place, not like you were in Rochester. it has a romantic feel to it and cozy with the couch seating and pillows on the benches. our waitress was so bubbly and positive and helpful with the menu. so many great extra items while keeping what they had before the renovation. they have their liquor license with great choices to pick from. must go earlier in the night because they sold out of items we originally wanted. we got the cauliflower appetizer that was not that spicy. my boyfriend said the lamb shank was tender and delicious. the salmon was also. next time I'm trying the white clam or the scallops read more

Really delicious and unique flavors. We used to get their delicious take-out kebab dinners before they rebranded to fine dining. We miss those dinners, and now it is much more is expensive to eat there. But the new redecorated space is beautiful and we loved every bite. The lamb lollipops with pea purée were outstanding, as was the super tender falling-off-the-bone lamb shank dish with a sumac sauce and crispy chickpeas. The jeweled rice with nuts and red gobi berries was beautiful, and I was obsessed by the green persian rice dish, with dill and nuts and fava beans. The duck confit and the chicken was amazing too. I was QUITE disappointed with the restaurant based on the price point of the appetizers and the entrees. The only truly great dish was the scallop entree. I ended up having the tuna which was solid to good (but not great). The crab cake (appetizer) was too way small for the price (but tasty), the date salad was quite mediocre (quite bitter with only a few dates), the the brussels sprouts were just ok. The pistachio cheesecake was quite dense and average at best (again not up to the level based on the price point, ratings, and other options in town). The server was quite nice (and good when he was around), but the service was extremely slow (particularly after we received our entree; the slowest I've ever encountered). We felt quite bad because he was rushing, pressured, pouring drinks and managing a number of other issues while serving us. This restaurant is understaffed. I would like to give the restaurant another shot, but there are better options in the area when paying $250 (with tip). I was extremely excited because we love the concept and this type of food, but it was kind of a letdown. I'm just giving my honest feedback because the Google and Yelp reviews are way too high. read more

The ambiance here is a little bit Golden Girls meets Mediterranean outdoor cafe. I tend to prefer a darker ambiance, but this wasn't a bad thing, just an observation. Our waiter was lovely but not particularly engaging, I was surprised they didn't have a cocktail menu (this might've been a deal breaker, had I known). The flatbread was good but was sort of just a cheesy garlic bread and a bit over priced. I had the Kurobuta pork chop with pomegranate bbq sauce but the pork was overcooked and the bbq sauce was burned and it's all I could taste. Husband had the spring rolls and they were delicious! He also had the Maine scallops - also overcooked - not terribly memorable and also pricey at $42... Overall it was ok, it was an anniversary dinner and there are so many other places in town I wish we'd gone to. Um, I heart this place so much... and I didn't even go in it. You know how sometimes you come across people or places that immediately feel inviting and full of love? Chortke feels like that. Chortke has been on my "to visit" list pretty much since it opened, but I'm delighted to have FINALLY been able to get takeout from there today. Wanting to get a variety of items to enjoy with a friend back at home, I ordered a steak (chenjeh) rice dish, as well as a wrap with chicken and steak (joojeh and chenjeh), 2 of the baklava orders (there are actually 2 pieces of baklava per order, so this was 4 pieces all together), and two small shirazi salads. I ordered from my phone while about 20 minutes away, pre-paid online, and made my way over. Once I arrived at the restaurant (tucked in the back of the Village Gate area), I noticed a woman standing outside the restaurant... then opening the door and going inside. I'm now assuming that she's probably the wife from the couple that owns the restaurant, but, at the time, I didn't think anything of it and assumed people could go inside. I got out of my car, went to the door, and tried to open the door, only to realize it was locked. It took me a second to look to the right and see the sign, which asked for people with takeout orders to call the phone number so someone could come out with their order. (Oops) Once I realized I was supposed to call, I did... and the cheeriest sounding guy picked up the phone, confirmed me by name, and said he'd be right out. Once he did get to the door, he was just the absolute sweetest... thanking me for coming to try the food for the first time, saying he would have been more than happy to bring the order to my car, and just generally giving off the most welcoming and lovely vibe. I *think* it was the husband/co-owner, Yasha Aghdasi, but I'm not 100% sure... because, you know, masks. In terms of the food, the portions are generous, everything is flavorful, and the quality of ingredients is high. Others might say prices are a bit steep, but for the size of each dish? I don't agree with that... I think the pricing for what you get is entirely reasonable. TL;DR Chortke is a delight, and I would absolutely visit again. The ambiance was incredible, the lighting, architecture, use of plants in the space...the whole place felt like a roomy outdoor terrace, but it was an indoor venue. The use of color and space is exciting and truly excites the palate for what's to come. The staff and management were incredibly friendly and well-versed in the menu options when it came to suggesting pairings. Our waiter was so helpful throughout the evening, even though he was incredibly busy. Then, the food came, and it not only looked appealing, but the aromas and flavors teased and tantalized the palate. We ordered an appetizer, sides, entrées and dessert. We truly loved each dish. This restaurant was high on my list of places I wanted to try for a while now and it did not disappoint! We went on a Saturday night and were able to get a reservation no problem earlier in the week. I truly think this place is underrated and a must try for anyone in the area. It's a larger place so it can accommodate large parties. Takes you out of Rochester and into the Mediterranean beach with the clay and straw interior design styles. Only flaw is it's a lot of table or table and booth not a super cozy spot as lights were medium brightness. So if you're looking for super romantic date night in a cozy corner this is not it. But don't let that steer you from trying- the food is amazing! Service was good. Server was very knowledgeable about the wine list and let us sample the two we were deciding between before purchasing. We went with the Don David Malbec reasonably priced at 46.00. Ordered the lamb lollipops (cooked medium rare so make sure you like them that temperature - we do so no issues but just something to be mindful of). Main course we shared the kebab. It comes with two kebabs so perfect for a couple. We added the cauliflower which tasted amazing as well. The food was great. Both my boyfriend and I were astonished the place wasn't packed. Last night my friends and I shared a selection of vegetable and seafood dishes (one friend doesn't eat meat) and we loved every one. Some stand out dishes: The date salad - arugula and other greens studded with dates, etc., wonderfully dressed; the scallops with orange - best I've ever had; the cauliflower and the carrots - YES! Chortke's veggies shouldn't be relegated to "side dishes". They list them as "Essentials", and they are. Our desserts were awesome, especially one made of shredded crispy phyllo, fruit, something creamy... I don't know, but we finished every bite. The interior of this place is SO beautiful! Was very impressed as soon as I set foot into the establishment. It was pretty empty on a weekday night, which I didn't mind, as service was fast and attentive! We ordered a LOT: the spicy roasted cauliflower, lamb lollipop, the sliders, chelo kabob, and Persian spicy chicken pasta. We also received complimentary pita and butter, which was decent but honestly I could have done without it lol. Everything we ordered tasty, and my favorite was the pasta. It was definitely spicy, they weren't joking around lol! The noodles looked hand pulled, which I loved, and they were cooked to a perfect al dente. The sliders were also good, but there was a strong horseradish taste to them that was a bit overwhelming. I loved the fries though, they were crunchy yet still potatoey :) The lamb lollipops weren't my preference as they were cooked to a medium rare, whereas I prefer well done heh. The roasted cauliflower was good and tasted pretty much how you would expect them to, and at that point I was too full to eat much of the kabob dish, but as far as I can remember it was cooked well and tasted decent, but wasn't anything special. We ended the night with lava cake and vanilla ice cream, which was good but probably not worth the price (around $13). So Chortke is the SECOND Persian restaurant in upstate NY and now the only one upstate. I have literally been waiting decades for Rochester to finally get one. So this was super exciting! We ordered: Spicy Joojeh (Chicken) with salad. Chenjeh (Steak) with salad and rice. The meats were tender, not as flavorful as I'm used to - but tasty and designed for the American palate. Each order comes with a perfectly charred grilled tomato. The salads were fresh and the portions were great. The only thing is I wish it was more authentic, came with yogurt sauce and bread. But I get it's catered to the demographic and this is a start. So I won't complain! The owner was super nice and welcoming.
