Before coming to Brazil, I downloaded the Portuguese dictionary on my android phone. This helped me decipher the menu which is entirely in Portuguese. Hint: salmao is salmon and atum is tuna. Their sashimi is excellent for salmon and tuna. I also enjoyed their modern play on large rolls from their Tmak rolls menu. My favorites were #18 and #26 with soy sauce and tabasco sauce poured lightly on top before each bite. With the exchange rate at close to 3 reals per dollar, I often ate for $10 to $20 depending on whether I ordered sashimi or not.

Each time I tried to get his attention he would look away smartly. Finally, after about 10 minutes I walked over to the cashier and asked if a waiter could be asked to come to our table. I received a strange response and decided at that moment to dine elsewhere. Upon departure the waiter came forward and I asked he if refused to serve us because we were American. His answer, in English was YES. This is a restaurant immediately across from the Holiday Inn where I would expect foreign travelers to be (me included). And, restaurant Dona Lucinha is well-known in Belo Horizonte for serving an authentic version of this food, in typical buffet style. The layout and design inside is rustic and casual, albeit a bit cramped - including in the buffet areas. The dishes include a range of traditional meats, including Rabado com Agrião (Oxtail) and Frango ao molho pardo (Chicken in dark (=blood) sauce). Other options include tutu (bean puré), costelinha (ribs), linguiça (sausage), feijão tropeiro, mandioca, the slightly bitter jilo vegetable, and the delicious quiabo (okra) vegetable, a.o. The warm foods are served in traditional stone pots. There is a separate (small) area for a few cold vegetables and salads, and an excellent range of traditional desserts. The service is very good, although this would be expected considering the price. Post-meal cafezinhos are served at the table. Our group was also treated to some delicious jabuticaba liquor.
