Our first visit with two new puppies, staff was very pleasent and welcoming. The wait for a room was very short, they were busy but not over whelmed. At the time of the year, the snowbirds are starting to leave. I am sure they get busy during season. There are lots of Pets in Punta Gorda!!! The vet tech preformed the routine first visit work, we had a great conversation and she provide lots of great tips for our new additions. Dr. Shaw was very plesant and gave each puppie a good look over and administerd the shots and Microchip. The puppies were not scared and Doc was great with them. as a follow up to my last review, my cat was doing well initially but 6 days since the teeth extractions, he has taken a turn for the worse and is no longer eating. Since choice had done the extractions which I paid for, I reluctantly decided I need to call them. While initially I was given an appointment 45 minutes latter, after I asked if the vet that would see my cat was the same man who had gotten very scary reviews here. I was then told to speak with the office manager who flat out told me that they would not treat my cat and would be sending me a letter to this effect. What a load of horse... Jody, the office manager along with several of the techs are rude & completely unprofessional. If you have an appointment at 3pm plan to be there until 6pm, placed in an exam room & forgotten. You're lucky if Dr.Shaw spends 5 minutes with your pet before trying to order every unnecessary diagnostic possible then prescribing the most expensive meds they can without asking if you want or need them, their estimates are useless because they'll add hundreds of dollars extra in unauthorized diagnostics &/or meds. He will upcharge you to death. The last tech I had was hands down the rudest most condescending, unprofessional, uneducated person I've ever had the displeasure of meeting, but she's not the exception there. I started going to Choice years before Dr. Shaw bought the business, the difference is night & day, the original vet & owner was outstanding, Dr. Shaw is subpar at best, incompetent, negligent & all about the $$$. After more than 12 years with this clinic I will never go back after he advised me to stop antibiotics that were prescribed by a different clinic for my 18y/o cat because he said "they won't help" my cat was dead within 3 days & had to be rushed to a specialist emergency clinic where he passed. During that last visit they kept me waiting for 3hrs, the tech as well as Jody were beyond rude, condescending, unprofessional & incompetent. The final bill was well over $100 more than the estimate that I was given AFTER Dr. Shaw took it upon himself to do an ultrasound without my approval, I never witnessed the ultrasound & I was never given any proof of an ultrasound, no recording or sonogram prints, so for all I know they just charged me for something they never performed, I personally believe they simply performed the paracentesis (abdominal tap) & never performed an ultrasound at all, which might I add I also never authorized before being charged. They're still listed as a low cost spay/neuter clinic but they ARE NOT & I'd seriously reconsider allowing this clinic to perform any surgeries on your beloved pet, Dr. Shaw has overdosed at least 2 dogs & caused the death of another that was spayed by him. Dr. Shaw also claims to be a homeopathic/holistic vet, but he IS NOT, I have more knowledge of homeopathy & naturopathy than he does, I'm pretty sure he just bought the certification online to attract another demographic of customers, because there's no way he has ever done the coursework on homeopathic medicine, he didn't even know natural alternatives for lasix (prescription diuretic) he said "there are none" when there are numerous, it's basic knowledge that parsley is a natural diuretic but Dr. Shaw didn't even know that. Bottom line is he's a greedy, incompetent fraud that will take your money without providing any effective treatment or kill your pet, charge you for diagnostics that are never performed & never provide proof, upcharge you for unnecessary treatments, procedures or products, prescribe the most expensive options even when a less expensive alternative would be more effective. If you love your pet DO NOT take them to Choice & NEVER EVER allow him to sedate or perform surgery on your fur baby. read more

Horrible ethics. I had my cat with me in Florida and needed to get a health certificate for him. I made an appointment with them and they required a $150 deposit that would go towards my bill. They did not quote me a price at that time. I agreed as my vet in VA charged about $300 for this. They called a few days later with a quote of $800!!! I canceled my appointment as this was just outrageous, and they will not refund my deposit even though I canceled 72 hours in advance. I wish I had looked at their ratings on here before I called them. If I had seen the low rating here I never would have called. read more

Dr Shaw was very rude, unprofessional and condescending. I asked to see my dogs xray and he refused said he has already looked at it and could not determine the problem so an ultrasound was next. Ok...but I still wanted to see.the xray...he refused and began raising his voice to me. I explained to him you cannot talk to me like that...who do you think you are. At this point he yells at me he going to give me 5 minutes to calm myself. I was not rude nor did I raise my voice. I simply informed him I was leaving and did. This all could have been avoid by simply sawing me the xray......my lingering question is why couldn't I see it. I paid for it?? I would never refer anyone to him. So very disappointed. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Took my 8 month old American Bully is for a triple surgery procedure; a spay, cherry eye excision and soft palate resection. The surgeries all went amazing and my puppy was so well cared for by all the staff. She woke up comfortable and quietly with no issues! I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Shaw. He has helped me tremendously with my three legged Frenchie, who needed him at his most desperate time. Not only has he helped me with my Frenchie, but he's also helped me with my horse thoroughbred who has had chronic feet issues for quite some time. Both of my crippled babies are doing so good. These veterinarian are amazing. I can't say anything but praise. Two years ago my sweet Beauty labradoodles was very sick with cancer. They were so wonderful and caring kind. The vet took me back into a room where he did an ultrasound and showed me exactly what was wrong with my girl and spent all the time with me I needed to make the right decision. Unfortunately she had cancer not able to have surgery. I chose to go forward with having her put to sleep. They were just amazing. My cat could have died if the specialist (another vet in another office) didn't tell me too much fluids were being administered and too stop immediately. Dr Shaws response was my cat was already sick and was seeing a cardiologist that we sent her to- YES EXACTLY Dr Shaw - you knew - you had the records - so your Dr Marchecco should have been checking my cats records !!! This office takes no accountability whatsoever!!!!! I know of several other much sadder outcomes on people's beloved pets at the hands of this office. First time there on 12/29/23. Brought my old cat for general check up. They wiped my cat and the carrier since he made a mess in it from his nerves. They put me in a room in a timely fashion. Then I waited. A helper came in and took down my info and what I was there for. She left the room. And I waited. And waited. My cat was scared and my infant was getting fussy. And I waited. Was about to leave when the helper came back in and said she was going to take my cat to the back for bloodwork. I was like what do you mean? She said she relayed to the vet why I was there and the vet said to run blood work. I said I haven't even met the vet nor was my cat examined by the vet how does she know what to look for? What is the bloodwork for and how much? She said it was the basic senior panels starting at $200 bucks and the vet was very busy with other pets because she was the only vet there today. I agreed to the basic blood panel because I was there for a check up but highly unimpressed with how they conduct business, and basically telling me that my cat was less important than the other pets. The helper came back in with my cat after taking blood and said the vet will be right in. A few minutes later, the vet came in, but didn't even really look at my cat still. I had to ask her to look at his ears because that's one of the things that's been bothering him. She's like oh yeah, ok. They did a swab of his ear, and I asked for them to clean his ears while I was there. She said it would be about another half hour for the results of the bloodwork and I said they will have to call me because I'm not waiting any longer. I got a call just a little bit after 5 PM. I missed the call and called right back within two minutes but they were 'closed' and didn't answer. The vet did leave a voicemail saying my cat needs to start thyroid medicine and needs meds for a 'raging' ear infection. I missed them on Saturday during the short hours they were open. Again, I have a very fussy infant and it's hard to do things anymore. They were closed for New Year's. I call today at 10:40am to see if the medicine was ready so I can pick it up. The lady at the front desk said that they would get back to me. I asked if they would call me back today? She says yeah and now here we are. They're closed for the day and I've had no call back and my cat does not have any medication. I received a text at 5:30pm saying the medicine was ready. Mind you, they 'closed' at 5pm. I was hoping they could redeem themselves from the first impression. However, now I just think they're a lousy business. All the while my elderly cat is suffering. read more

Took my one year old dog here to be spayed. She was healthy and happy and the odd turned. She came out blind and paralyzed. Had to be fed through a syringe. She was a shell of a dog I use to know. Dr shaw was extremely unprofessional in the exam room screaming at me for commenting on a Facebook post. I will never use this vet again. I will also never refer anyone to him. read more

This vet has gotten so busy he takes little to no time with each pet owner/pet. Our lab puppy was spayed by Dr Shaw and we experienced post surgical complications that he did not take the time to address. Returning 5 times with concerns of severe vomiting and weakness two weeks post spay surgery, never once was our lab physically examined. He simply kept prescribing medications and stating it was caused by anesthesia. I went to his office with Fynster as I was so concerned. The staff informed him that I was there. I was told he had a few patients, however, he would be out to speak with me. After 2 hours of waiting, I left. We returned with Fynster 2 hours later, demanding an Xray (recommended by friend who was a retired vet as he stated something was seriously wrong.) Just the thought that we had to demand diagnostics is wrong. The X-ray confirmed our suspicions and our lab was rushed to an ICU hospital where she went through a 3 hour surgery. Her GI Tract had not been functioning since soon after the original surgery. A NG tube had to be placed and fluid drained and food given through the tube. Never did Dr Shaw listen to her abdomen, palpate her abdomen or order diagnostic tests. He just called her "high maintenance puppy" and prescribed new medications each time. We have been taking our Labs to his clinic for over 8 years, but we will never trust him with our animals again. It is not the same as in past years, sad to say that he has either lost interest or is too busy to give good care. Our beautiful 1 year old black lab, Fynster, passed away from complications of the spay surgery. This tragedy could have been avoided had he only taken the time to listen and run simple diagnostic tests. Instead, he simply kept throwing medications at Fynster. Not once did he reach out to see how his patient was doing. Dr Shaw will never have the trust of another of our animals, he has lost empathy and the time to truly listen and physically examine his patients when there are concerns, he simply prescribes medications. We are heartbroken in the passing of our beautiful little girl...If only he had slowed down and listened..... read more

I had an emergency with one of my dogs on a Sunday, the Emergency clinic in Fort Myers said her case was hopeless and my puppy was dead. Outstanding office! Dr Shaw is knowledgeable, caring and goes above and beyond for his patients and their owners. If you want a veterinary Dr. and office that truly cares and offers exceptional care, this is the one. He saved our dogs life twice, once with an enlarged spleen and another time when an emergency vet suggested euthanasia but after a consult with Dr. Shaw on a weekend that his office was closed but he still answered our call. Dr Shaw after speaking with us, offered an alternative. We took it and our dog rebounded and lived another 6 mos. pain-free and loved. On Thursday night I had concerns about my puppy because it seemed her stomach was sore, and after office hours Alayna was available to answer all of my questions and allowed me to bring Nova in at 7:30am to take x-rays, and have a wellness exam. On Friday my 6.5 month old puppy had to go in for 3 major surgeries. Alayna and Dr. Shaw treated her as if she was her own. While in surgery Alayna even gave me a call to let me know that everything was going smoothly. They spent a lot of time with me before and after the surgery to let me know my options and to explain the after care of the surgery. Alayna and Dr. Shaw went above and beyond to take care of Nova and I couldn't be more grateful for them. I am specifically thankful that Alayna was the Assistive Tech Vet on staff Friday as she was very knowledgeable and patient with me. I also received a follow-up call on Saturday from Choice to get an update on Novas status and to make sure everything was ok.
