The story of Chocolate is a Mayan story ... and Choco-Story is a small museum and chocolate shop in the heart of the Yucatan dedicated to that rich history.
The Valladolid store embraces the vibrant tradition and flavors of authentic Mexican chocolate. You can buy chocolate bars in a wide variety of flavors and high cacao content. The mix of dark chocolate with citrus, nuts, or spices all make Choco Story bars unique ... and authentic. In addition, there are bags of cocoa powder and other chocolate treats available in the store.
Xocolatl (translated as 'bitter water') is the Mayan word for chocolate ... which is similar to the Aztec word Chocolat that obviously led to the word we all know and adore. The Mayan civilization is believed to be the first to discover cocoa around 900 AD. After the Aztecs conquered the Mayans, cocoa was actually used as the currency for tributes and taxes.
There was no sugar in Central America, so Mayan chocolate was very different from the chocolate we regularly enjoy. For Mayans, crushed cocoa beans, chili peppers, and water were blended and poured repeatedly between cups to create a foam top before being served. It was a very popular and common drink similar to how Americans down coffee these days.
In Valladolid, next to the famous Parque Francisco Cantón Rosado in the center of town, is where you'll find Choco-Story. Inside the museum/store, you'll find a deep Mayan appreciation and respect for chocolate history mixed with modern authentic Mexican chocolate. read more
