Busy but quick. Parking is minimal but other places available to park. Servers were pleasant and quick. It was busy but didn't have to wait long to seat a party of 2. Ordered the chiliquiles and the country breakfast. Chiliquiles we're spicy. The biscuits and gravy country breakfast was average but we were so hungry so this place hit the spot for us. Would come back but not like we would drive out of the way to come but it would be an option of choices if needed. How you sit your customers down, take our drinks order and ask us to get up because you're giving someone else the table. ONLY because Barbara told you. This rating is for a true diner experience. It is not gourmet cuisine but the food is tasty, plentiful, and reasonably priced. The customer service was excellent. Our coffee cups were always filled without having to ask. Our waitress checked in with us frequently to make sure we were OK. Nice spot and low cost foods. I had the chilaquiles or however you spell it with grits on the side and tea all for less than $20 and left both full and happy. I've been meaning to experience this place for a while. The breakfast was fresh, plentiful, and offers a large variety of options. This diner is a gem with friendly and attentive service, retro decor, personable waitresses and great coffee. This is a very real, classic, traditional diner food. Denny's and IHOP are corporate McDonald's versions, the breakfast at chips is fresh, from a normal filling portion of eggs to fresh home made style waffles and omelettes. Went to this place for the menudo, but got there too late because it was sold out. Found a nail in my drink. Like someone bit it off or clipped it off. I brought it to the managers attention. He took it in his hand and was pushing on it. Didn't really say much. I felt like he thought I was lying. I asked him to come to my table to ask my kids and parents, because my mom was the one who pointed it out and I fished for it. Asked for bottled drinks and decided to stay since my dad loves their menudo. I figured I would get my drinks for free or something. NOTHING Really gross. How did a nail get in the fountain drink? Designed by Harry Harrison in 1955, Chips Restaurant is one of the last authentic nearly original 50's coffee shops in the true South Bay. After the demolition of Holly's/Hawthorne grill on Hawthorne Blvd (the actual coffee shop from Pulp Fiction,) Chips has taken the main stage as Hawthorne's primary googie eatery. The restaurant stays true to it's 50's roots and the exterior is genuinely authentic. The inside has been somewhat remodeled and has a less vintage feel. There are numerous pieces of goofy nostalgia oriented items decorating the interior. I will give them "points" for the fact their official logo is a 1957 Chevy which is super cool! The food is typical coffee shop cuisine and includes such items as steak and eggs, burgers, waffles etc. I had a New York steak with eggs there last time I visited and was pretty impressed. The prices are very fair and they sometimes do have "leader" specials. I think right now they have a waffle breakfast for around $5 which is pretty cheap. The owner "Manny" seems to be very enthusiastic about the building's nostalgia and seems very friendly. The only draw back to Chips is that it's in a slightly depressed area of Hawthorne. It's literally at the border between Inglewood and Hawthorne, which is kind of a funky area. I think it's also funky because it's so close to the flight path of LAX. It doesn't bother me, but a lot of my friends get turned off when I suggest going there to eat. They also close really early like around 8pm. If they were open later I would go there more often. Chips is one of my favorite 50's coffee shops in LA and I really hope you'll love it too! read more

I didn't dine in, but the atmosphere was a old school diner, very empty, retirement home feel. Old and outdated, A bunch of the golden girls were there. The driest pancakes ever in existence, I almost choked and died, it sounds funny now but it was an actual experience. No amount of butter and syrup can save these pancakes, deceiving they look golden brown and fluffy but will have your throat questioning if you ate a box full of kitty litter. They don't even use REAL butter, I asked the waitress and all she had to say was she doesn't know because she works in the front. You should let people know you are using FAKE butter!!! The sausages were soggy, the scrambled eggs were hard and over cooked with NO seasoning, salt + pepper bounced right off the eggs like nope my granules are too good for this. The hash browns oh lord the hash browns they were also over cooked, and tasted like it was drenched in oil. Ordered a country fried steak, I always make sure to check my food before I go, it was a turkey sausage platter. Apparently the waitress had a language barrier preventing her from hearing orders correctly. She thought we ordered a country breakfast, she fixed the order and off we go. The biscuits weren't even biscuits, it looked like white bread cut into 4 pieces and it was plain no type of toasting. The steak was edible with sauce added, over all they make their food for people who clearly have High blood pressure, no tastebuds, probably no teeth just gum it up, why even chew just swallow, because you know we make food for people who don't wanna taste it. Great little local spot. Loved that it looks like you walked right into the 1950s. The coffee was fantastic! Was there on a slow night - I was the only person there, but the waiter did a great job. I ordered a burger and fries. For the price, it was worth it. Not the best burger of my life but good. Sat and was able to eat and enjoy my food with out feeling rushed. Sat and had a couple cups of coffee and chatted with the staff. Would probably try breakfast next time - can't beat the prices. read more

Just went here for the first time after driving by last weekend- had no idea Chips existed, let alone since 1957! Had the Elvis omelette with hashbrowns and toast, and it was a great breakfast- thank you, thank you very much. The staff was wonderful- everyone was focused on serving the customers in a friendly manner, making for an ideal atmosphere to dine in. Again this restaurant retains it's original 1955 diner décor and it is bright and very nice. they have an outdoor seating area with a cute little fountain and a lovely breeze blowing through. The servers were very sweet and accommodating. I have also passed by this place for many years and decided to give it a try. The are various dishes on the menu. My SO had the liver and onions and I was s till in the mood for breakfast and had the chefs special; Machaca and eggs. The coffee here was flavorful (better than Pann's). My SO said the mashed potato's and gravy were good and the liver was just ok. I tried them and agreed. The machaca n eggs were good and decently flavored. Overall I will return to this place. p.s. The food was excellent in it's true traditional American style food with a menu that also caters to the Latin community in Hawthorne, Ca. We ordered country breakfast and the three stooges Breakfast . The cook was on point with the breakfast; however he did manage to over cooked one of the over medium eggs. Hence a 4 star review over a 5 star. The severs were all very quick and courteous. Never allowing your drinks to get too empty. All this at a full house. This is a nice little restuarant, with a 50's diner style to it. There are photo frames of Cadillacs inside, an old radio, and a fat TV for decor. Elvis music was playing in the background. They have a small parking lot in the back. Service was quick and very friendly. Prices were reasonable. Food was a little plain. Luz was really nice. Food on the other hand ok at best. I asked if the has was home made and I admit it looked like canned, but was home made. It has a sour taste like mustard or the chilies they put in it were marinated in vinegar. Grits were done but runny. I asked for eggs scrambled soft with cheddar cheese, got American. Yes one can taste the difference. The toast came late and was cold, but it's toast. Overall Meh....nothing to brag about. Chicken soup was good, fresh ingredients. read more

We've been here six or seven times now and every time it's been consistently delicious diner food. Omelets, menudo, chilaquiles, chicken fried steak have all been excellent. Having a great time here. The atmosphere is relaxed yet fun, old school 50s style. The Caesar salad with chicken was delicious and the service was quick and friendly. Will come again! UPDATE: When I ate here, my car broke down for the night. The staff gave me consent to leave my car over night and get it towed in the morning... but before giving me consent, two came out the back door and actually looked at my car, had tools, looked at my car, then helped me push it to an out-of-the-way parking spot. Without knowing me, two guys that worked here, during their shifts, helped push a car and helped work on it... that is great. This is an amazing place and even though I had an unfortunate circumstance... that was truly amazing to see and a blessing of a staff to have. I pray to God those two gentlemen who wore black and worked on 9/11 around 7 at night get a raise.
