So I recently discovered the "Local Flavour" category on Yelp and I think it's awesome. It's great for tourists! Ottawa doesn't have many "Local Flavours" listed, so I'm adding some. This one is for Chinatown.
Ottawa's Chinatown is fairly small. It runs along Somerset Street West, from Preston St to the west to Bay St to the east. Now coming from Toronto, I feel that it's a little dinky. It's not that big and doesn't have too many businesses. And it's slow to get trends that you see in larger cities, like we don't even have a bubble waffle place in Chinatown, nor rolled ice cream, nor dragon's beard candy. We don't even have a Chinese bakery that sells those delicious Chinese buns! (Well, there is a tiny one inside Kowloon Supermarket, but that's the only game in town). There is a beautiful arch near Bronson and Somerset West, and the street posts, garbage cans and public benches in Chinatown do have a distinct Asian motif, but it doesn't have that "je ne sais quoi" that other Chinatowns have - like in Montreal there's that part of their Chinatown on rue la Gauchetiere where it's closed off to vehicular traffic that has that different feel to it. Well, my Buddhist father would be quick to remind me that "I must drink the tea I am drinking now, not the tea that I drank yesterday." (I should experience things for what they are and not compare them to other things). I don't know if I necessarily agree with that philosophy, but that may be because I am not yet enlightened, lol.
I'm still giving it 4 stars though, because it's still a cool part of town to see, and is home to lots of good Asian restaurants.
Once in a while they have some festivals there and the place gets much more vibrant. Recently, I went to "The Ottawa Asian Fest Night Market." A part of Somerset West was closed off to cars, and vendors filled the streets (some local vendors, but admittedly the majority were from The GTA). It was fun to see some food that isn't readily available in Ottawa, and there was a small parade with dragon dancing as well.
I've come to learn that everything in Ottawa is a little bit smaller scale (I've come a long way from the first time I went to the Super-Ex and was so disappointed because I was expecting something like the CNE, lol). It's not necessarily a bad thing. Ottawa's Chinatown has its own little charm. Come check it out and see for yourself :) read more
