The menu is varied, you can expect to easily spend £12. The alcoholic beverages are slightly excessively priced, they have a special shot of high grade spirit, It knocked me for 6, I think it was moonshine couldn't be sure. The portion sizes are very good, the services was very friendly. Walking up to the second floor could be a problem for disabled people.

You order your…read morefood, they cram it into little foil tubs, top it with white cardboard and send it to you. Then, you shovel into your gaping maw as you sit, slack-jawed, watching whatever the television has deemed appropriate for your evening's entertainment. Chinese just isn't Chinese without uniform scenes from Emmerdale flickering across your retinas like a strobe like from some really boring Hell. The Phoenix Garden, however, has gone some way towards dissuading me of this notion. The decor in the restaurant is quite lovely; the pink pastel hues grant the place a lovely, warm ambience for you to enjoy your food in and the service is quick, charming and very helpful. The food itself is certainly the best part though. It's not that expensive, and is very delicious. It loses something in the formality of the restaurant atmosphere, I feel, but the food is still worth the hassle of actually leaving your hovel. It's not quite The Swallow (but then, what is?), and I'll never forgive The Swallow for closing the restaurant portion of the business, but The Phoenix Garden does a fine job in its stead.

Service is fast and there's on street parking, what more could you want? Of course, if you are feeling lazy you could always get them to deliver. My heart goes out to Marco, the guy who owns this place. He is often obliged to work on his own, serving behind the counter as well as cooking the food. His wife sometimes helps out on the busier nights, but it's difficult with children that need looking after at home. This means that he never gets a night off. Yummy Yummy is open seven days a week. I recently asked him why he didn't close on a Tuesday like most other places, and he explained that he couldn't afford to as the busy nights are random in this part of town. Sometimes he does better on a Tuesday than he does on a Saturday night, and with business being pretty slow taking a night off would really hurt. I don't understand why this little take-away isn't constantly teaming with people. The food is great, made with real flair, with Marco using his massive ladle to scoop up all of the ingredients, including the spices and salt. His dexterity is impressive. He makes Duck and Pineapple just how I like it.. delicious! And it's so full of vegetables that I know it's packed with nutrition, (even though I know it's more than likely full of MSG as well... but what Chinese take-away isn't?).

I've never been to Pearl of the Orient before, but I really loved their neighbouring bar's food so was happy to try this place out for the special occasion. The food itself was 5 stars, but I'm taking 1 star off due to speed and portion-size. ~ Atmosphere: If you're looking for a fancy night, Pearl of the Orient really gives it. Sleek and classy, this place has all the makings of an upscale restaurant. Probably the poshest Chinese restaurant I've ever been in! ~ Customer Service: The customer service was great, but the speed was really slow. Granted, we came on Chinese New Year which also happened to fall on a Saturday night, so I can't speak for the speed of the service for other times, but we waited over an hour for our food to arrive. As I recall, Ba Orient didn't take as long with the food so it could've been entirely that the kitchen couldn't handle the packed hall of diners, and some of the chefs may have been off themselves to celebrate the New Year. So, the long wait times may possibly not be a regular thing. ~ Food: Absolutely gorgeous. I'll be honest, since I moved to Cardiff from California, I really had to lower my standards on quality Chinese food since there's little to no competition for an authentic Chinese restaurant. However, Pearl of the Orient's food is probably good enough to hold its own even in San Francisco! The Hong Kong stye crispy roasted pork was heavenly and the sea-spiced aubergine was out of this world! The meal was so delicious and you can definitely taste the quality. The only disappointing thing is the portion sizing! I ordered 7 dishes total for 3 people which normally should've been plenty, but everything was in such small portions that we were only filled up when we ordered an extra dessert. Great tasting food, but if you're looking for a Chinese-style "feast", then you definitely need to order a lot more. I would've added more orders on, but with the wait times we decided in the end to not bother. Oh yeah, for the dessert, go for the fried custard buns. OMG! --- Overall, I'm happy to give Pearl of the Orient a try again. It's a tad bit expensive, but in my opinion you're paying an extra surcharge for the magnificent decor and atmosphere. The food is incredible, but you might want to order a lot more than you had originally planned. However, if I come back another time and the horrendous wait is still in effect, I would have to pull the rating down.

The flavours unleashed were incredible as you would expect from a middle tier restaurant, you can expect to pay at least £20 a head but it is well worth it, try to avoid to much rice don't buy it just because its what you usually do. The point is to try many different meat, fish and poultry dishes not fill up on rice. The dishes come out on these little trays with fairy light candles to keep them warm a nice touch and practical. I would go as a group of 4 maybe a double date and be spontaneous try many new dishes you've never thought of having the taste is amazing. I would recommend going for special occasions, meals with family members or the introduction to the in-laws or celebrating engagement. If you are going for a birthday party It might take to long for the service, Its your call.

I think it may be testament to the quality and cleanliness of the oil in their fryer. But really good poppadoms. And, here's the best bit, they're free! I know! Free poppadoms! Unfortunately only if you spend over £10, but then who manages to order a chinese meal without it being that much. Now, this is a traditional British Chinese takeaway. You know, the really heavy, gloopy, greasy, salty loveliness that is a good Friday night chinese takeaway. The sort you eat til you burst. And bursting is a real possibility when you see the portion sizes! I always try and fool myself and say that I'll just get Singapore Noodles, cos its smaller than a meal and separate noodles. And then it arrives (they deliver) in a double size container! Although I like to 'forget' this the next time. The prawn toasts are amazing as well. Whole slices of white bread, deep fried and really good and hot prawny filling. Mmmmmm. If you want a feed, you want it delivered and you don't want to move afterwards (and a partial to left over chinese for breakfast, look em up and give em a call. Oh, did I mention the poppadoms?

I eat way more than I should do and it still feeds me for two days, even when I only order two dishes. The noodles are some of the best I've ever had, the chips are great, the meat is always tender, and if you order over £10 or £20, you get free poppadoms or prawn crackers respectively. Their menu is huge and they have a wide variety of vegetarian meals. They're also great with fussy eaters, happy to take out any ingredients you don't, or can't eat. They deliver to nearly everywhere in Cardiff and I've never waited more than 45 minutes for an order. And their food comes in those nice plastic tubs rather than tin trays, keeping it nice and warm while you're eating, and ideal for putting in the fridge to eat the next day.

Take no notice of the slightly plain-looking exterior, because inside it's quite smart, very friendly and serves great food every time. Apart from offering a varied menu, they also have a number of Set Menus which are good for sharing - offering excellent value. I've only ever eaten here in the evening, and didn't realise until reading other reviews that they also serve dim sum in the afternoons - so that's now on my list of things to try sometime!

It is incredibly well maintained, despite the general dilapidated look of the immediate area surrounding it. I would go so far as to say that this is the best Chinese restaurant in Cardiff, it's certainly my favourite. Renowned for their inexpensive dim sum on a Sunday, getting a seat can be pretty tricky. But they serve dim sum every night - you just have to ask for the special menu. The staff are great, they'll stop to have a laugh and joke if you are inclined to get conversational, but regardless of this the service is prompt. They really know what they're doing. The interior is light and airy with well spaced tables and decent décor. It's easy to spot a well cared for restaurant, and the food always corresponds to the standards
