The food and service were absolutely terrible. Went out with my S.O. and ordered appetizers, dinners, and dessert. After everyone who came in after us got their food, a chef came out and tried to give our dishes to the table next to us. When I told her it was for us, she rudely said she doesn't serve tables, threw away the plates, and left. That was the last service person we saw all evening. Thankfully, the food was already cold because it sat on the counter for 10 minutes, making it easier to eat. After finishing half of the cold dinner and realizing we wouldn't be getting any desserts, we went up to the counter to get a refund. To my surprise, the cashier kindly said he would comp the desserts. But I reminded him that we never even received the desserts we ordered. Very terrible. read more

This is by far the best Chinese food in Boulder. Be sure to ask about the specials- we ordered on Christmas Day and had the Mongolian Lamb. It was excellent. Everything else we ordered was good, except the dumplings, which were VERY doughy. I would skip dumplings and go with egg rolls (very good). I got food poisoning from eating takeout from China Gourmet on North Broadway early evening Sat., Feb. 6, 2021. Besides vomiting for 6 hours on Sunday 5:00 pm night the food poisoning symptoms included a 101.7 fever so I decided to get a Covid19 test Monday morning. Because my lungs are clear and I had no exposure to covid19 my doctor diagnosed food poisoning. Lucky me. The tiny restaurant is a spreader source. There were 7 workers in a small hot space. There are no aisles between workers. There is no spacing, period. The chefs don't respect masking. Viruses don't care about language problems. In the 15 minutes I was there, one chef rinsed his hands in a faucet above the ingredients and wok he was using. No one else washed, including the guy handling cash and food. The environment violates covid19 protocols on all levels. The fact that I got food poisoning is not as serious as the restaurants' near zero implementation of covid19 protocols. Public Health is not political, not optional, not negotiable and not so expensive that every restaurant and patron can't make a serious effort to do their part. read more

I've gotten food to go from China Gourmet a few times, and each time I've been really pleased. It's sometimes hard to find good quality Chinese restaurants after moving to a new area, such a Boulder. China Gourmet delivers both on flavor and freshness. I'm a huge fan of their Beef Chow Fun, and would highly recommend this dish! The to go service is both quick and highly attentive. After having a bad experience with the Longmont location, we heard better things about the Boulder venue and decided to give it a try Subpar all the way around. Placed a take out order and no one mentioned it was a cash only joint. Was told there would be an hour wait - which I don't mind - except when I showed up they unceremoniously told me they were out of scallion pancakes we had ordered (2x). They asked if I wanted to wait an additional 45 minutes for replacement appetizers. No one could be bothered to call anytime before then to tell me? When we got home our General Tsao's had no sauce and about half of the chicken just ended up being the tail ends of the fried breading with no chicken in it. Szechuan Beef was ok for the first few bites but ended up being gross. And the Veggie Lo Mein was tasteless and had zucchini in it - WTF?! The fact that I'm giving this place 3 stars does not mean that it's average. I'm super-critical when it comes to Chinese food, especially because I've never had awesome Chinese food in Boulder...or Denver...or Aurora...or anywhere in Colorado. Having lived in New York, California, and CHINA, I have high standards when it comes to Chinese food. I can't complain too much though, because most dinner entrees are under $10. Lunch combos are only $5.95-$6.95, which includes an entree, spring roll or chicken wing, and white or brown or fried rice. You can't even get a sandwich for that price at some delis. The fact that the menu has General Tsao's chicken tells me that it is NOT authentic, as no one in China knows who that dude is. However, comparatively, I do think China Gourmet has better Chinese food than others. I usually get their Mongolian beef, seafood and tofu hot pot, tangerine prawns, or General Tsao's chicken (don't laugh!!!) 1 star off: having General Tsao's chicken on the menu (yes, I'm a hypocrite...I will give myself 1 star off, too) 1 star off: having beef with broccoli on the menu (no broccoli in China either) read more

My dad visited over Thanksgiving break and I took him to all my favorite eating destinations in the Boulder/Denver area (Amu, Pho 95, Biker Jim's, Heaven Star, etc). Which was the only one he chose to go back to a second time? China Gourmet. CG has certainly been outdoing itself lately. Everything I've ordered in the last two months has been topnotch, and each of the six entrees my dad, my boyfriend, and I ordered during our two Thanksgiving-week visits were exquisitely prepared. In addition, of course, to being lightning-quick and cheap as always. We almost always order off the Shanghai Specials page, but Dan has discovered the best orange chicken ever on the regular menu - it's spicy, with carrots and chilies abounding. Of the dishes I haven't described yet, we also had... - Ants Climbing a Tree: bean thread with pork, surprisingly spicy, but very delicate. - Chinese Eggplant Hot Pot with pork: my personal favorite; it has been known to convert an eggplant-hater or two. Tender and generously studded with pork slices. - Sauteed Fish Chunks in Hot Bean Sauce: unappetizingly named, perhaps, but a very fresh and healthy fish dish with a kick. - Shanghai Style Shrimp: I think I mentioned this one in a previous review. It's the one with the maply sauce and green onions. The shells stay on, and they're crunchy without being impossible to swallow. - Sauteed Spicy Chinese Eggplant: probably has the best sauce on the menu that I've tried. It's a spicy gravy thickened by delicious eggplant slices and leaves you with the feeling that you just ate something both really delicious and really good for you. I plan to dramatically up the frequency of my visits to China Gourmet so that I can try everything I want to try on their giant menu before I move away next summer. Same goes for the cost... you don't want to spend $15/each... you just want something tasty but not expensive. So, out with Pearl again. Enter North Boulder, and the China Gourmet. I think it's Boulder's best chinese restaurant. The location is incredible... and by that I mean it's out of the way and parking is a cinch! It's located right next to Lucky's Market, tucked away in the corner. It's also affordable, and simple... you order then sit down in a clean friendly eating area. Added points for real chopsticks... not disposable wood ones. For crying out loud, you don't get real chopsticks at Hapa, Zanmai, Japango, Tora, or anywhere else! The food is awesome.... lots of veggies and fantastic super-wide rice noodles in the chow combination plate. The egg fu yung is one of my faves as well. Go there, but not too much. I am thinking that quite possibly, what happened was that I ordered the Singaporean noodles...hoping for something close to what I experienced at a market in Singapore...but this was nowhere close. I am sure that for many, this place will be perfectly adequate for your normal, everyday Chinese (American) style fast food carry out meal. We have ordered from this restaurant a couple of times, and even my partner's orange chicken was "hit or miss", with some bites in one plate being perfect, but others too chewy or 'crunchy'-like, a bad, "cartilage or bone" kind of crunchy. love, love, love the food here! I have been going to China Gourmet since I first moved to Boulder about 14 years ago!! It is kinda hidden unless you know to look for it, as it is tucked into a shopping plaza and you have to go down some stairs to get there. I always feel like I am running down those stairs! Fresh veggies, spiced the way you like, and the prices really have not changed much in years! The only downside is that they do not take credit cards, so I have to make sure I have cash. You order at the counter, and a few minutes later, they call your name. They have ice water readily available as well as take home containers as I can never finish how much food they serve here! You can order your food with white or brown rice. Definitely, hands down, a super tasty experience! Horrible service and not great food! I decided to come here since it was next to another store in the same parking lot. First off, they don't even clean off their snow in front of their walkway so piled through snow and ice. Not an inviting environment, no hi or greeting. Next I asked if my lunch order would come with the sides listed on the order and they immediately said "no". There was no accomodation and I only get shrimp fried rice for a rip off price of $14 and change. Next when I picked it up they were rude when I asked for a fortune cookie and just gave me one. Last, there were about 4 pieces of shrimp in the $14 container of rice and it wasnt even cooked through all the way and overall bad. Do not go here -The food is bad and service terrible! read more

I would like to give this restaurant 3.5 stars - it's very decent and probably the best Chinese food I've had so far in Boulder. But not a 4-star situation. I probably should have read other reviews to understand the ordering process, which most people have detailed here. Instead, we sat down for a bit before we realized that a waiter wasn't going to come over to our table! So we hustled back and ordered. I did really like the fact that we paid at the beginning and could just leave when we were done. A nice perk when the kids are ready to just bust out of there! My favorite dishes are the mu shu veggies, the eggplant with garlic, and the broccoli and cashews. The food is consistently tasty and served up quickly. I have been going to China Gourmet for at least 17 years now. I love the fresh food and the generous portions for eat-in. My kids grew up going here and it is on the top of their list of 'where should we eat tonight?' The large bowls of soup are consistently good. We have been going to this restaurant for many, many years. Have always enjoyed the food/service. However, our recent take out order was less than acceptable. We ordered Sesame Chicken and egg drop soup. When we sat down to eat, the sesame chicken did not have very much sauce with it, there were bones in the chicken and the size of the pieces were too large to eat with chop sticks. The soup must not have been cooked very good as there were many large clumps of tofu and large clumps of egg. I called to let them know, and all I got was "Sorry - hope you will come again". Not that I wanted a free dinner, but I was hoping for a little more than sorry. We will be looking for another place to get our Chinese. Sad. read more
