My wife and I did the train/bus excursion today. I want to take a minute to say what an incredibly kind and knowledgeable lady Ann Early was for us today. This lady exemplifies what any business owner searches for when they are looking to hire a quality employee. She was super punctual, takes her job and responsibilities to heart and leaves you feeling like a better person because you had the chance to interact with her. She stopped many times for our group of 21 to get the kinds of pictures you will be sharing and remembering for years to come, all while keeping everyone on time to move to the next stop along the way. She was courteous to other tour operators, and even took pictures for our group. Her stories were engaging, serious, and funny. I learned so much history of the towns, the gold rush, and the people that made the towns what they were. We highly recommend Chilkoot and Ann Early!

I did a White Pass and Yukon Trail tour with Chilkoot Charters. The day went smoothly. They first dropped us off at the train station which we took to Carcross. It was very scenic and stopped at Bennett, BC as well. There was a bag lunch which tasted better because I was so hungry. James was our driver with Chilkoot and boy, does he talk. He was full of stories, very knowledgeable about the Yukon Territory and we made some great stops on the way back including Emerald Lake, and pausing to watch a bear. It was a relaxing way to take in history and natural beauty.

We chose Chilkoot for our White Pass railroad trip in Skagway since they offered the train up/bus down option that our ship didn't. I saw many reviews recommending this instead of the train round trip as you get to see different scenery on the return. The Chilkoot rep on the dock was easy to find right where they said they would be. The first rep handed us off to someone else who had us sit in his bus. He told us someone else was coming to get us and when they arrived we had to switch to that bus. Jennie was our driver/guide and gave us a quick tour of downtown Skagway on the way to the train. She explained the tour and told us she would meet us up in Fraser at the end of the train trip. As the train approached Fraser, BC we saw Jennie waiting for us. I was really looking forward to the return trip as many previous reviewers mentioned seeing bears and wildlife. We enjoyed Jennie's commentary and humor however we felt the ride was almost rushed going back. We made a couple quick stops but did not see any bears or wildlife as others had. It only took about an hour to get back to Skagway and we paralleled the railroad for a large part of the trip. I was hoping to see completely different scenery but it was much of the same.

I prefer to book my excursions outside of the cruise lines so I put quite a bit of research into choosing, especially with so many different tour lines. I ended up booking the Chilkoot Tours Yukon Adventure, there were 8 of us in our group and I really wanted to go with one of the smaller vans rather than the big bus. I chose the bus tour over the train because the bus goes along the same path as the train, but you get the chance to stop to get out and take pictures and, I think, enjoy more of the area. There were only about 10 others in the tour besides our little group, which made a very nice size. I was very happy with Chilkoot tours and James our driver. He is blessed with the art of storytelling, and he had some great stories for us that really enhanced the ride. There is so much beautiful scenery, its almost hard to take it all in, but James had some great places to stop to get pictures. We were even able to stop and get pictures of the mountain goats along the way. We even had beautiful weather which was an added blessing. The lunch was nice, the chicken was a little dry, but the homemade donuts made up for it. :) The museum and dog camp were nice little extras that helped enhance the experience. Would certainly recommend, this was a great way to see the beautiful sights of Canada and Skagway.

We just got back from Alaskan cruise/ land tour with a group of 22 friends. My wife did research and picked Chilkoot Charters for the Bus ride into Canada and White Pass train back to port. My wife and I ridden the train 3 years ago, and I couldn't wait for our friends to get to experience it. When we arrived in port, I was dismayed to find that an overnight landslide across the railroad tracks prevented us from riding the train. Chilkoot reps there at the port were awesome, explaining that they would refund the railway part of the tour, and that we would ride the bus both ways. Our group had our own bus, and Morgan was our driver . What a blessing! He was FANTASTIC! His obvious love of his job, and his hilarious sense of humor totally made up for us missing the train ride. He pulled over anytime anyone spotted bear/ moose etc. A funny touch was at the Welcome TO Alaska sign. He volunteered to take every couple's picture in front of the sign. Morgan collected our phones, took everyone's picture and gave us our phones back. Later we discovered that he added his smiling selfie to all of our pictures! Nice touch! We have been on many tours throughout many cruises and I have honestly never enjoyed a tour and guide as much as this! Chilkoot also processed everyone's refunds quickly! Great experience overall!

Best decision ever! I was so afraid because you really don't want to screw up the time that you are going to spend here, in this unbelievable nature! Well, the tour was wonderful! Just as I wanted and more! We started with the bus and Kevin, our guide, was awesome! Making jokes, talking about history, stopping along the way when he saw a black bear, bold eagle, a giant moose and even a porcupine!!! And then in our way back to Skagway in that historical train and seen the beauty of the mountain topping with snow! You just stared in awe all the time. It was great!

The day was dry, clear, but blustery and our ship was the only cruise ship scheduled in port that day, normally 3 to 4 cruise ships are docked each morning for the day. The train accessed a rail spur allowing boarding near the ship, but the terminal in town is not a long distance if lacking mobility issues. Each car has outside viewing areas, and clean bathrooms, but unlike the staff, guests are not allowed to move between cars. If you spy an issue with your fellow rail car guests upon boarding like small screaming children I would change cars quickly after boarding. Even though water was provided with my fare I would suggest packing water jugs or bottles, and some nibbles ( I packed some yummy freshly baked cookies from a lounge on my ship) for the 3 hour ride, inexpensive snack boxes were sold on the return trip from the summit as were White Pass & Yukon Route ball caps for $15. Windows are large, but if you want the river view as you ascend the 20 mile climb to the summit then sit on the left side, when returning the right side faces the chasm. Ascending and Descending you should pass several White Pass Rail Trains so wave at your fellow tourists. Overall a nice experience for me, with great views. This is a seasonal experience that mirrors the Alaska cruise season, and it takes weeks to prepare the rail for each season.

We were sailing on the Star Princess and needed to be back on the ship by 4:30 PM, but our White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad train was supposed to arrive at 1:00 and didn't actually arrive until 1:25. Since it's about a three-hour ride, I was worried we might not make it back in time for sail away. Thankfully, we did make it back on time! As soon as we got on the train, though, I was able to relax and really enjoy the experience. It truly felt like stepping back in time. The narration throughout the ride was fantastic and filled with fascinating historical facts. I had no idea how many people once hiked that route or how grateful everyone was when the railroad was finally built. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and the whole experience was unforgettable. One funny note: I've flown on planes and cruised on ships without ever getting motion sickness, but somehow I ended up getting train sick! The constant back-and-forth movement got to me, even though everyone else seemed completely fine. That was just me and definitely not the railroad's fault. Overall, this was such a unique and amazing experience, and I'm really glad we did it. If you're visiting Skagway, I would absolutely recommend the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad!

I'll go in reverse, starting with the excursion. My meeting spot was at their location on Fifth; super easy to find. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by Clay, who would be my guide. He radio'd to Jeff what size bike I would need and all that good stuff. Whilst we were in the store, I learned about his background, his passion for adventures and Alaska. Not before long, we loaded into a shuttle with Jeff, who would drive us a few miles past the U.S. customs checkpoint to begin the tour. (Note: my tour had to be modified due to some things outside Sockeye's control -- aka, part of the train tracks undergoing maintenance.) We had a great chat on the drive up; it was like talking with friends. Once we got to the point of the bike start, there was a safety talk and a chance to ask any questions. I also learned that Jeff would meet us at a point a few miles away, just to ensure everything was good with the bikes, gear, etc. Sockeye does have windproof pants and gloves that you can use; I did end up taking them up on the gloves, as I quickly learned that mine were not great for wind. I truly appreciated that, otherwise my paws might've been a bit cold! I highly recommend this excursion, as you really get to enjoy the Klondike Highway and the outdoors. What I appreciated is that as a very small group, we were able to stop and take ample photos. Clay has a great knowledge of the area, the names of mountains, waterfalls, the valleys, etc., and is a brilliant guide. I feel confident that he could have answered all my questions, if I had more. I'm also grateful for his recommendation to walk out to Smuggler's Cove. I'd asked for how else I could spend my remaining time in Skagway and he'd suggested a wander out that way. (I also got to see him and some of the new guides heading out that way of a walk when I was on my way back. Love the fact that people do what they recommend!) For those looking to experience the area -- who appreciate the outdoors -- this is a must-do experience. Kuddos also to the Sockeye support staff, Bekah and Alex. They were great in communicating with me, letting me know that my original tour wouldn't be running as possible due to train track repairs, but gave me a few options for how we could make it right. I truly appreciate them for running this tour, even though with it being late April, it was a very intimate tour. I am very happy I did this experience when I did: I truly felt like the Klondike Highway was ALL MINE. Highly recommend if you're looking for a different way to see the area! We decided…read moreto do this day excursion on our own and booked it through Alaska Shore Excursions for $598.47 for the 3 of us, saving $300 if we would have booked it through our cruise line (Norwegian). It was really nice because our group was really small, unlike going with the cruise ship excursion with a massive group. We got off at Skagway and the directions in the email said 'walk to the end of the pier' to meet an associate for Alaska Shore Excursions, not sure how we met up, I think we saw a van and headed for it. We were driven to another van, where Sarah took over as our guide and drove us to the middle of Skagway town so we could wait for another family, which showed up late. From there it was a 35 min drive to Musher's camp and we got some really great history from Sarah, who gave us the low-down on Skagway with fascinating facts such as: most of the wood used in Skagway came from a now-defunct town called Dyea that thrived over a 100 years ago, it was the size of SFO, but petered out for some reason. There are no MDs in Skagway, only 2 nurse practitioners. The high school graduating class only had 2 girls and 1 boy. Grocery shopping is limited to only 1x a week, on Wednesdays. The camp parking lot has a shop, but we didn't have much time to shop there. We had to get on a "unimog"; a monster truck Mercedes van outfitted with large wheels and low gears to take us up to a higher elevation (cooler temps for the dogs and less noise from yapping dogs for the Skagway residents). Once we got there we broke up into groups of 6 and we were led to our musher, Alex. We got onto a thing that looked like a super-large golf cart but it was pulled by Alaskan Husky dogs (fascinating history about them also). Alex's dogs had funny names like 'sushi' 'nori' 'wonton' 'fried rice' 'Charmander' 'Diglet' and 'Squirtle'. The dogs ages were 1.5 yrs old to 10 yrs old. The dogs did a great job pulling the 'sled', which was over 2,000 pounds. The ride lasted 10 mins and after we got to take photos with the dogs. We attended a talk at the end of the ride, led by a musher (too bad I forgot his name) about the Iditarod and how these dogs are training during the off-season and staying in shape pulling the land sleds. We saw a dog running in a giant "hamster wheel" and it was hard to concentrate on the lecture because the dog was stealing the show; the dog's name was Goodway. We got to pet Goodway soon after then go to the puppy pen and hold these baby dogs. It was a way to 'socialize' these puppies as well. I really enjoyed that. After our Musher's camp activities came to an end, we got back on the Unimog and back down to the lower parking lot area w/ the gift shop (again, not a lot of time to shop), and Sarah drove us back to the town of Skagway. I gave her a really nice tip because she contributed a lot to the total experience with her stories about Skagway and her expertly refined storytelling about a woman named Martha Black and Harriet Pullen, both influential women in Skagway/Alaska history. Would totally recommend you booking this tour directly with the dog camp or through Alaska Shore Excursions to save some money and also have a smaller, more intimate group.
