Dating from 1887, this metre-gauge line runs the 1.8km from Prien-am-Chiemsee DB station to the waterfront and boat terminal at Prien-Stock.
The line was opened to cater for the rising number of tourists to the lake, following the death of King Ludwig II (1886), when his successor, Prince Regent Luitpol, opened the half-finished palace on the Herreninsel to the public. It has provided a service ever since, though it's fortunes have waxed and waned over the years.
The train runs May to September but they have one historic steam locomotive and one diesel, so it won't always be a steam experience. The service is roughly hourly during the day and the journey takes 10 minutes in the delightful little green carriages.)
It's owned now by the boat company so you can buy a combined ticket at Prien station for your onward boat journey. read more
