I went to the Edgewater branch to drop off our ballots (had to do my civic duty, of course!). This is a nice branch, relatively new. It's a two story branch with the teen room and a community room on the second floor. The first floor has the children's section and whatnot. The children's area is actually much larger than I anticipated and I would like to bring my kiddo back again to visit. I'll definitely need to check the calendar. There's no parking at this location, but if I recall correctly there's a CTA Red Line station not too far away. And the bus, obviously. There's a bit of street parking in the front as well, but not more than a few spots. read more

The space is really great - light, welcoming, and clean. The staff is very friendly. Despite there being many people, extremely quiet.

This library is in a great location, has decent hours, and the staff has always been very helpful in my experience. It is a smaller library so they may not always have every book immediately on hand, but I use the CPL app to reserve books ahead of time and they usually only take a day or two to arrive at this location. I haven't spent a ton of time in this library (I've been a couple times to use the computers and printers) but find the location to be convenient and appreciate that there's a small parking lot attached. There's also metered parking on Broadway and several residential streets nearby if the lot gets full. The library is clean, the computers are fast, and the printers work just fine. Also, the staff seems friendly enough. I've had to load money on my library card to pay to print and it's always done efficiently. All in all, though I can't vouch for their book selections or availability, it's solid for a local library. read more

A clean, remodeled building with a good selection of books and resource material. The computers are great and the facility itself is nice to look at and there are a lot of positive things to say. The problem is the talking, which is loudest ironically by the staff members. Even when assisting patrons where they should be whispering they talk (most of them) at full volume. I or no one else wants to hear this. Read the reviews folks and change this or you will be reported to the city. read more

This library building update was a long time (about two years) coming, but really worth the wait! The formerly cramped space has almost doubled to around 1600 sq. feet (it's supposedly the largest branch library in the city), with a new 2nd floor, lots of windows, community meeting space and even a teen studying center. The building is even LEED Silver certified, with a permeable paved parking lot, recycled materials used throughout construction and a green roof. It's filled with new books, and what looks like more than twice the computer stations than were there before construction, which is great, because this branch is supposedly one of the busiest in the city. I can believe that, since there was actually a line of over 20 people checking out books on opening day, even though the line was moving fairly quickly. The same great staff is back, so, get on down there and say "Hi!". I know I'll be using the other nearby branches less, except when the local branch doesn't have the book I'm looking for. The inter-branch book delivery system is still pretty slow. read more

Having worked in a library once upon a time, (decades ago), I feel I'm qualified to speak about what are the expectations of the circulation desk person - Of course, anyone could speak to service and the lack thereof. I was very disappointed with the service I received. First the signage for where different services and location of books was unnoticeable and small. I waited in line for ten minutes to ask about copying services and was shown a scanner. The librarian seemed upset that I didn't know where things were, even after I explained I was new to the library. She had taken time with her regulars to check out the children's books and videos... She initially waved her hand saying the scanner was back behind the counter. I knew she didn't mean actually behind the counter where she was and with a quick glance, I could see that there wasn't a "scanner", so I restated what she said along with explaining that I didn't want a scanner, but simply a copier. She explained to the remaining patrons that she would have to show me where she met and that she would be right back. This was a tad belittling - I think excusing herself without the explanation would have suffice, since the regulars all heard our exchange, but this is just my idea... Once she showed me the scanner I asked if it simply copied. She said I would have to send it to myself in an email, then walked away, saying just follow the prompts. She didn't answer the question. I know that some scanners double as printers, so I thought ok - maybe... It did not. It was just a scanner - I could have done this at home! I also could have done the printing as I found out. I thought son number 3 took the printer cables when he moved... The librarian was not a happy camper. I was not a happy camper, but at least the regulars were pleased as punch with the service THEY received - with a smile. read more

This library was clean and well-stocked but it was packed on a Tuesday afternoon! Of the CPL branches I've visited, this one was hands-down the busiest (which is probably a good sign!) All of the computers were being used during my visit so I was glad that I had my own computer. While I wouldn't recommend this branch as a quiet study spot, I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area to check out their nice selection of books and other media. Also for anyone driving to this branch they have a small parking lot that you need to take the alley to access. I was able to snag a spot but there was also lots of street parking nearby! read more

I used to frequent this library before they did the renovation when I was a little kid in elementary school! Since they've renovated, I've been here a few times over the past couple of year but not as often as I should be going (I used to be a book warm but not so much anymore)! I stopped by today to get some Biology books for some additional studying for my finals. I lost my old library card and had to get a new one, the process was smooth and took less than 2 minutes. After that, I went up to the second floor and asked one of the libraries if she could tell me where they had Biology/Science books, she happily showed me where they were located. I also noticed that they have a schedule for free library events throughout the month such as movie showings, writing workshops, chess events, etc. Pretty cool that they're hosting fun events. They have computers/laptops available for use as well. The inside is beautifully decorated and there's so many windows that the entire library is sun drenched and refreshing to be in! I definitely plan on coming here often in the summer to pick out some more books to read. This place is wonderful to study, relax or unwind with good book! read more

This is the first quiet library I've been in. Employees were nice and spent most of the morning cleaning. Layout is great, and I was able to find a study table and work for about 3 hours. Everyone kept masks on the entire time to comply with COVID guidelines. read more

Here is my 2 cents: I'd give it 5 stars b/c it's in my hood and now I won't get late fees for being unable to return boks (no- the book mobile had no book drop) and because Rita is one of the best librarian I've ever met and I've been haunting libraries for 40 years SOLID. However, I took a star off for the flimsy shelving on the second floor, (seriously, the thing rocked when I re-shelved a book. I'm scared of the future torts I see), and the general sense that, yes, it's green, it's new, it's sort of airy- but it has all the soul of Target and feels like a Walgreens. Not "bare bones" elegant, but more like Ikea furniture- it's cute today, but will look like crap and feel worse in about 10 minutes with the kind of use that place is going to get. Don't mean to harsh on it- just doing my job here in attempting to be rational and honest while still appreciating my blessings. read more

On opening day, June 29, 2013, the newly rebuilt (from the ground up) library was beautiful and ready for business. The no-charge parking lot next door (only for about a dozen cars) is viewable from the street, but only vehicular-accessible by the alley entrance. Attendance was fairly typical for a Saturday afternoon, including about 2 dozen in line for check-out and new library cards, etc., at the front desk. Since the place is still so new, a lot of books, media, and reference materials have yet to be shelved (probably some late nights for the staff). New for this facility is the second floor (the previous building never had one). This is where the full length of the south wall is devoted to computer workstations. About a fifth of the large room holds their A-V (CDs, DVDs, etc.) collection, and the major part for sit-down reading and work at long tables. If you will have trouble using the nice staircase, there is an elevator at the north wall to make this floor fully accessible. And as confirmed on this first visit, you can always count on a public library for a clean bathroom. Fascinating to read that this has a green rooftop. I hope they open that up for viewing soon. read more

I was so glad this place re-opened shortly after I moved to the 'hood. I was going to the Rogers Park branch and frankly the checkout staff there was not only slow, but so, so unfriendly. I would give the Edgewater branch five stars, but the checkout has been painful the few times I went there. There are only two terminals and unlike Rogers Park, the people are really nice. Really nice, as in, chatty. If a patron feels like talking about non-library related stuff, they hold that conversation even if there are 15 people waiting in line. I know they don't want to be rude, but come on! Regardless, I've been happy going there and will continue to do so. Yay libraries!! read more

They need to ease their policy of not refunding for print jobs, especially when it is through no fault of the user. When the printer works, it's great, but when it doesn't, they really don't want to help you. They just tell you to print again and make you pay again. read more

This is a very welcoming library. Not only are the personal, very quick, and efficient, but they do this, day in and day out, with an amazing number of people filling the library; and in need of more than a few services. On one of the coldest days in Chicagoland in decades(many businesses were closed), their attendance didn't rate as a slow day comparably. I'm giving them a four star review, because CPL likes to spoil me, so, I can't tolerate the hours. I have to admit, though, they've figured that out, too. In unison with the other local libraries, all the hours are staggered so that, one is always open. Truly, they deliver service with a quality, that is not always easy to find or keep. read more

It's unfortunate to have to write a bad review about the only local library within a few miles, but there you are. Selection of books: Poor. And while you can order in from other libraries, it takes forever to get books, CDs, etc. It took more than a month for me to get a book that I put an order in for, and several weeks to get a CD. Really? Physical location: The library is small and cleanliness is obviously not at the top of their priorities. There are two floors and there is no elevator for those that might find it difficult to walk to the upper floor. Customer service: The main reason for the one-star review. Slow, apathetic, and obviously not customer-oriented. Aren't we, the taxpayers, paying for these public libraries with our taxes, and shouldn't we be entitled to receive better service? I rather think so. I've actually stopped going there as much as I used to whenever I'm in town because I find it to be an altogether unpleasant experience. read more

The library building its gorgeous and the books are well organized and easy to find . I find it convenient, because I live in the neighborhood, but the parking it's very tough , specially later in the afternoon. The staff of the library, it's always talking to each other And telling stories just to get entertainment, and they care less about the patrons . There it's a guy that really need to be fired, he is rude and it's playing games in the computer., Maybe to kill some time and get entertainment, because it's a small library and they don't have much to do. read more

Do not expect this library for more than what it is. It is a normal library with employees who chose to be mean and unhelpful. It is a great way to make you feel bad if that is what you're looking for. Very disappointed. I was expecting them to be more personable. There was someone who was helping me to look for an item but another employee interrupted her and at the end, it was better if you search for the book yourself. read more

I'm glad it finally opened up, though I basically only use it for picking up reserved books or returning, so the bus was adequate. Interlibrary transfer takes forever and the lines are always slow, but it's not like I'm going to drive to another one when this is 3 blocks from me. read more

I used to go to the library around Belmont but once i realized that the Edgewater library was blocks away from my house I started going there and ever since it has been a huge mistake. Their book selection can sometimes be low but my main problem has to do with the check out staff. The first time I went to the Edgewater library, I went right to the desk to return and pay for books that I knew were about a couple of days over due and after explaining this to the desk attendant, she asked that I pay her before I could renew them again. Not what I was trying to do...maybe just a simple matter of miscommunication. Not a big deal. However, this morning I tried to check out another book. As I approached one of the desk attendants I said, I would like to check this book out but I have some past due payments that I need to make on books that I have returned. I'm not the most timely man...sue me. So, this woman says ok why don't I renew these for you (they seem big on that here) and afterwards told me that my past due payment was in the amount of $14. I had returned these books the night of either December 21st or 22nd in the drop box so there was no point in renewing them and they were maybe two weeks overdue so one can imagine my surprise when she told me it was over ten dollars. She said she couldn't lift the renewal because she had already set it and she couldn't waive the fee because the only person that could do that was in a program and couldn't help.I didn't want the fine waived but I wasn't going to pay the $14 because I felt it was too much for the amount of time that those books were actually overdue. She tried to get other attendants to help her but they all kind of fumbled around. I tried telling her that I knew I had past dues and that I didn't need them waived and that I just didn't think that it would be that much but basically all she said was yeah I can't help you waive this. I felt completely disrespected and unserviced. I was completely ready to pay the appropriate fine. I didn't ask for it to be waived at all. They gave me no answers about when the person who could help me out would be available or if my books had even been returned properly and at the right time. I am extremely put off by this Edgewater location. read more

This is a nice neighborhood library with a good selection. I am new to the area, so I just started patronizing this location, but it's close and convenient. If there is something that you're looking for and it's not on the shelf it doesn't take long to get it after making a request. My only qualm is that they do not have a printing station. read more

It's a very nice library, very helpful librarians, checkout was quick and easy. Kids section could use some additional items to keep the little ones busy. I know it's a library, but many Chicago Library locations have puzzles, various blocks etc. This one typically just has large blocks out, and maybe some crayons. I have been to a couple programs here for kids and had a good time. read more

I think the people who staff this library hate their jobs. This was my fifth and final visit to this branch. The checkout process has been so painfully slow every time, I am now convinced it is deliberate passive aggression. Today, one of the two people working the checkout desk pointedly ignored the five people waiting in line in favor of checking IN books that had been returned earlier, making multiple trips to put them in the "reshelve" area and never looking at us patrons even once. After about fifteen minutes of this, she walked away and disappeared into the ladies' room, never to return. Meanwhile, the other woman kept moving at a shockingly glacial pace. The people in line exchanged a few puzzled glances, but I think we were afraid to speak up for fear it would result in a punishment of some kind...like maybe they would BOTH walk away from the counter. read more

Every time I come in to pick up a hold (which is the only time I use this library) there are screaming children EVERYWHERE. They're running around completely unsupervised shrieking their heads off. EVERY. TIME. I. COME. HERE. Sullen teenagers slink around outside the front doors on skateboards or bikes or just sitting on the ground. Unruly kids are everywhere. Good thing I don't go there to read or concentrate, because it would be impossible. Oh, and the staff sucks. They couldn't be slower or more uncaring if they were paid to. (Oh, wait...) read more
