This is where I take my friends and family when they visit and want incredible Japanese, sushi, and fish. The service is outstanding, the experience is fun and entertaining as you can watch the talented sushi chefs create stunning dishes. I am pescatarian and love Chiba-Ken. It's one of my very favorite restaurants on O'ahu and the staff is half of the reason. Their sake is the bomb.

Really enjoyed the yakitori, sushi, large and varied menu, outdoor patio, how close it is to HHV, and the Japanese staff that spoke English & Japanese. Would def come here again & wish I got to eat here more than once!

If you're looking for a late night izakaya with happy hour (9pm-close) . I highly giving Chiba-Ken a try. Their happy hour menu is soild with a lot of dishes to choose from. Besides that their regular menu is solid too. Happy Hour dishes that was order: Agedashi Tofu- Good. Salmon & Ikura Bowl- Salmon was fresh and Ikura was delicious. Hamachi Roll- Fresh and delicious. Sausage- This was fantastic. Sausage had a nice snap to it. From the regular menu: Torotaku Roll- Fantastic. Kohada Nigiri- Good but a bit to vinegary. Ume Roll- delicious refreshing roll. Salmon Skin Skewer- Fantastic. Beef Tongue with Negi Sauce- Delicious. Chicken Yakitori- Very good Yaki Onigiri- Perfectly grilled. Nice and crispy on the outside. Service- our waitress Michiyo was fantastic and friendly. Overall, Chiba-Ken was a good find for us and it was so close to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. You can't beat good food with good vibe.

Chiba-Ken is a local casual favorite for Japanese comfort food - we came here for a later dinner, and we were seated promptly. We ordered: +a Beef Short Rib with Garlic Sauce skewer +a Yakitori Chicken with Garlic Sauce skewer +a Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura +a Salmon Avocado Roll The skewers were just okay, as I thought they could have been more seasoned and more savory. The tempura, on the other hand, were delicious, as the batter was light and super crispy - a generous portion as well as a good variety for a shareable app! The roll was simple and fresh. They also have a patio for patrons to take advantage of for al fresco dining; even when we left, there were streams of parties coming in. Chiba-Ken also offers a late night HH, which offers some great deals. The staff here are super kind and friendly, and very attentive. Cute and clean little spot to get your cravings fixed! +Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura +patio dining available +friendly service

Really enjoyed eating here. Pretty authentic. Sushi was fresh, service was quick and great conversations with table next to us.

Stalwart traditional Japanese Izakaya serving up high quality Sushi, Sashimi, Nigiri and Japanese Izakaya fare. Service is always on point. Not fussy but friendly and efficient. The restaurant is not fancy inside but has a lovely patio and really reminds me of being in Tokyo. Watch the specials menu which has a rotating selection of offerings. On my last visit I had the Sashimi Omakase and it was spectacular. A generous selection of upgraded sushi options like fatty tuna, sea bream, salmon and more. The location is off the beaten path for Waikiki and feels like a hidden gem even though it's been around for a while. Highly recommended.

Truly authentic place! You can try some traditional Japanese rolls: Kanpyo roll - yummy! A bit sweet, but nice. Plum roll - there was too much cucumber, so I didn't feel plum much. Natto - it was an experiment for us. Unusual taste, but it was nice to give it a try! Avocado+salmon roll - solid. 3 types of sashimi: yellowtail was gorgeous. It melts in your mouth (didn't know fish can do that). Salmon had a bit too fishy taste. Tuna was good

Shrimp & sweet potato tempura, crunch & delicious!

First of all, very clean and comfortable atmosphere when you walk in. I was so impressed by service, very prompt and courteous. Fresh sushi and sashimi selection, happy hour is until 830. I would make a reservation there were so many people waiting for to be seated. Highly recommended!

    Salmon skin salad- very good!

We live nearby and this place has a special spot in our hearts. The food used to be excellent but since the change of ownership, the quality of the fish and the sushi are not the same. We ordered Uni, hamachi and toro and all of it tasted like oxidized. We will come back and hope the fish quality is better. The service is excellent and attentive.

We went there when they just opened at 5:30 on a weekday, so it was empty and even when we left, it was pretty much the same. Because of that, we had all the attentions of staff and the service was very fast. All of the food was good, except for a few things - 1) an egg in the Pork Belly Kakuni was cold, 2) the Deep Fried Tofu could've been fried a bit more until it was light brown, 3) Beef Short Ribs could've been cooked longer until the some fat gets melted off. Nevertheless, the quality of their food is pretty high and they have been consistent, which I find it very important and appreciated.

Fell in love with Chiba-Ken restaurant. The atmosphere is just the way I like it comfy and family style. The service and food were wonderful. From the moment you walk in you were treated with care. The food came out as described by menu. I highly recommend this little friendly Japanese Sushi Restuarant. We went two nights in a row... Enjoy!!

It hurts me to leave a 3-star review. We originally like this restaurant so much, we actually dined there two days in a row. But the most recent experience made us not want to go back. Food was very good, service was awesome the first night there. The second night, we asked to split the charge with only one dish on the other bill. That bill only had about $20 on it, so I told my sister I would take care of the tips. She took care of that check first. Right after she paid, the lady was so rude and asked her to leave tips in cash in a very arrogant manner that made all of us felt very uncomfortable. I still left them a good tip (more than 20%) despite her making us feel so uncomfortable. I also know a lot of people who likes to tip in cash. If they care so much about the tip, perhaps they should have a mandatory tip added to the bill since Hawaii gets a lot of foreign visitors. The lady's horrible attitude totally ruined our rare family reunion with everyone coming from all over the world. It's a very disappointing experience.

Food was very good as was the service. The Chirashi and sushi rolls taste fresh. I also enjoyed the fried squid.

They have shared parking lot with the surrounding establishments which was fairly open since it was so late (I think they were the only one open by that time). We were able to get seated fairly quickly (bar seating style, not individual tables, although they have a few of those as well). This spot is decently small but they seem to fit everyone in fairly efficiently. Upon seating we were given menus and waters after. The waiters are decently attentive since we were seated right by their kitchen/back of house opening. We got: * Chicken Karaage: 10/10, I would heavily recommend this. The chicken was juicy and lightly crispy. What MADE this dish was actually the egg sauce on top. It acts as the aioli but clearly much more homemade and heathier, with egg white pieces and the sauce made of egg yolk etc. We ordered this twice bc it smacked. * Taco Rice: 7/10, okay so... I'm not even going to lie when I say that I was a bit tipsy already when I agreed on ordering this. I THOUGHT this was a TAKO (octopus) rice. NOT a TACO (Mexican) rice. It tasted like I was eating taco bell, which wasn't bad per se but just felt weird being in an izakaya. * Beef Tongue: 9/10. I would recommend this as well. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful. They didn't go overboard with the sauce on top to let the meat shine through. * Seared Aburi: 8/10. The person I was with order it. It was good, no strong feelings about it. It was cool to watch them sear it though. It was on the fishy-er side tho, compared to other forms of sashimi (likely due to the skin still present). * Hot Sake: I would recommend this if you don't enjoy drinking. While its hot/warm, it helps it go down a lot more! Honestly I enjoyed the fried chicken so much I would actually come back just to eat that and maybe try some of their other dishes. Plus the izakaya experience definitely felt really authentic as it was bustling when we visited.

The food itself?…read moreHighlights for sure -- the tacorice in the stone bowl was excellent, the hamachi with eggplant was a standout, and the rafute, while a bit dry, still had its moments. The kitchen is clearly talented. But everything else? A real disappointment. The server was cold and unfriendly the entire visit. The larger tables of four around us were getting great, attentive service -- smiles, check-ins, the works. But when she dropped food at our table? Not even a word. It felt pretty obvious that since the bigger tables had an automatic 20% tip guaranteed, our table just wasn't worth the effort to her. And that's exactly the problem with sneaking an auto-gratuity in fine print at the bottom of the menu -- it creates exactly this kind of situation. If the service had been genuinely good, I would have happily tipped 20% on my own. But to have it quietly tacked on after being largely ignored? That feels sneaky and disrespectful. This place used to be a go-to for me. Today really dropped the ball. Be upfront about the tip policy and treat every table like it matters -- because to the customer, it always does.

My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version.
