Not just a good meal but a unique and refined culinary experience…read moreThis place is breathtaking, with excellent service and superb cuisine. Located on a narrow side street in Toulouse's old town, only a removable sign indicated that  there is a restaurant in the back, no street front. You walk under an arch into a backyard of sorts. There is a sundeck with comfortable chairs attached to what appears to be the living space of a family. You are instructed to go to the basement. It's hard not to be at awe as you enter the cave. The soft glow by indirect lighting gives the space a soothing, or romantic feel, depending on your current mood. We decided to try the local dishes; the Lapin and the Cassoulet. Foie gras and Roasted Veal Salad. Brownies with licorice sauce with pistachio ice cream, and something called Paris brest with chocolate and praline ganache, strawberry and popcorn. A bottle Chateau Plaisance wine, from the Bordeaux area, complemented our meal well. All were exceptionally good. But it is the service that brings it all together. Even with the language barrier (our lack of French and their limited English) they managed to make us feel comfortable and well served. It wasn't until we were leaving that I found the owner spoke another language that we could have communicated with.  While traveling, I like to experience as many places as possible, but Les Caves de La Marechale is a place I can see myself going back, again and again.
