It was a great experience to stay at the Elmwood Village Inn. My wife and I arrived in Buffalo for…read morethe first time for a three-day weekend. We didn't know what to expect. The Inn is right in the heart of the village, with nice restaurants north and south on Elmwood. Intermixed are interesting shops and boutiques, cafes, and even a cool grocery store. A mile south is Allen Street and all its wares; a mile north is Buffalo State and the art museum. Hop on a one of those rent-by-the-hour bikes, and Canalside and downtown is a quick pedal away. Even more, there is easy access to the freeway that gets you to Niagara Falls quickly (I suggest Whirlpool State Park for an alternative trip; the hike to the bottom of the gorge is gorgeous). The Inn itself is clean, interestingly decorated and comfortable. The room we stayed in was large ... and my wife took advantage of the large bathtub to soak away a late evening while enjoying a glass of wine. There are snacks, toiletries, water and other small touches that made the stay very enjoyable. What isn't mentioned on the Inn's website prominently is the breakfast: they are delicious. The owner has worked in the restaurant industry as a chef, and it shows. There is a wide selection of healthy options (such as fruit, granola, yogurt) along with hearty meals, pastries, cheese, sausage, etc. And, perhaps most importantly, the coffee was great. One last thing: take advantage of the porch. There is an outdoor sitting area off the communal living room that provides a great place for enjoying coffee and a newspaper in the morning, and a delicious nightcap (perhaps with some Buffalo-style pizza) in the late evening. The people watching from the porch is also great (Elmwood Avenue is pedestrian-heavy throughout the day and evening). Anyway ... if you enjoy culture, food, people-watching, access and beautiful neighborhoods, you'll love this place.

If you're looking for that authentic Buffalo charm without feeling like you've accidentally…read moretrespassed into your grandmother's historically preserved living room, this is the spot. From the second you walk in, the house radiates that classic, cozy "Old Buffalo" energy that makes you want to cancel your plans and just exist in a state of perpetual relaxation. To the left of the entrance is the dining room. It's less of a room and more of a 24/7 hospitality hug. There is a relentless flow of snacks: chips, pretzels, fruit, and candy. The drink selection is equally aggressive in the best way possible (Nespresso, BOTH Pepsi and Coke products, beers, and teas). I spent an embarrassing amount of time just surveying my options. The Room (The Grover Cleveland): The room is a great mix of "I'm in a historical landmark" and "Thank God there's a heated bathroom floor." It's well-preserved but doesn't lack the modern essentials. The Pros: Mini-fridge, wall-mounted TV with streaming, and a shower with a hand wand (excellent water pressure, too). They even left two pitchers of water for me, one chilled, one room temp. That is the kind of over-preparedness I appreciate. The large windows allow tons of natural light to enter. Wall mounted Aveda shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the roomy shower. And yes, the bathroom has a wall-console controlled heated floor!! There are two luggage racks, writing desk and two comfy lounge chairs along with the king sized bed. One side has a nightstand with alarm clock abd the other side has a marble shelf on top of an old-style steam heater. There are plenty of plugs around the room and the door has bolt lock with old-style key. The Con: My only tiny gripe? The pillows. They were a bit on the "pancake" side of the spectrum, very thin and definitely not fluffy. If you like a firm loft, you might find them lacking. The Amenities The fireside library and parlor are perfect for pretending you're reliving the 18th-century lifestyle, and the covered front porch is elite-tier for people-watching. Parking is easy: you can pay for the off-street spot or just roll the dice with the free street parking (which was totally fine). The Food & The "Staff" The breakfast spread is legit. We're talking yogurt varieties, hard-boiled eggs, fresh fruit, homemade granola, and homemadr scones that I am still thinking about days later. Seriously, the scones alone are worth the booking. Also, special shout-out to the resident dog who clearly thinks he's the General Manager. He's the friendliest employee on the payroll. The location is walkable to a bunch of local shops and restaurants, so you're right in the heart of things. If you want a comfy stay that is affordable and feels historical but isn't "stuffy," this is your place!

The inn is located in ElmWood- the area is very walkable. Close by to many local shops and restaurants. The inn communal area is very pretty and is filled with histories. We were in awe how well maintained the inn was. The staffs were all very friendly. I really enjoyed talking to Polly. She was very accommodating. The stay comes with light breakfast included. The room is huge and is nicely furnished. Some improvement suggestions I would have is having more outlets or extension cords. The room actually faced the street and it was shockingly not too noisy, though I thought the inn was thoughtful when I saw they did provide a white noise machine. I highly recommend checking out this place if you're in Buffalo NY. Definitely worth the money.

It stood out to me because…read moreit's a historical landmark in the heart of downtown Buffalo and I'm all about that stuff. You can find it on the corner of Lafayette Square, which is obviously where it got its name. From the outside it definitely looks historic with the giant Hotel Lafayette sign at the top of the building that lights up red at night. The architecture really is something. Now the inside has the same charm, but it definitely comes across as more dated. The rooms however, have clearly been updated over the years. I was lucky enough to get a corner room facing the square and a beautiful mural across the street that features flowers that can be found in and around Buffalo. It was spacious, the bed was conformable, I loved the historical mural that was placed behind the bed, and I especially appreciated the giant standing mirror. Hotel rooms tend to have terrible lighting and one small awkwardly placed mirror... that was not the case in this room. I enjoyed my stay but... I found it odd that I didn't run into a single other person staying in the hotel the entire duration of my stay. It was so quiet, eerily quiet. The few times I spoke to the staff they were hiding behind the receptionist area where I couldn't see them, so I found myself just saying "hello," into the abyss. Both of the staff I encountered were sweet and helpful, especially when my food was delivered with no utensils and I was in a bind. Another plus is there's a really cool coffee shop with an entrance from inside the hotel. Overall, I totally get the charm and would stay again.

Room was quiet and clean. Housekeeping policy/schedule was a bit haphazard. No service the first day, which was fine, but we needed service the second day and asked for it in the morning at the front desk. We came back in the late afternoon and nothing had been done. (And no, we hadn't left the "do not disturb" sign on our door). We left for dinner and asked for service again, but were told that it may not be possible that late in the day. When we got back in the evening, we discovered that it had occurred, so that was great. However, the next day, we found that towels had been replenished but bed wasn't made. It wasn't a big deal, just kind of odd. The next day bed was made and towels replenished. Not a deal breaker, just unpredictable. Front desk staff wasn't the friendliest, but overall were efficient. Sundry shop could have used a wider range of selections as there is no bar or restaurant at the hotel. Would have been nice to have had some canned cocktails or wines and a couple more types of beer, perhaps a variety of cookies. Indoor pool and hot tub were very nice features of our stay. We enjoyed them daily. Clean. Hotel is walking distance from a couple of coffeehouses, a sports bar, and a some "local gem" restaurants, which was very nice. Not too far from Niagara Falls and other local points of interest, easily accessible by Lyft.

But unfortunately it has a long way to go. The building itself looks like it might have been built as some sort of boarding house. It's laid out like an apartment house, but the rooms are just that: a room, with a bathroom attached. (Indeed, I got the impression that some people I encountered were tenants.) The place appears to be undergoing modest renovation at a glacial pace. It was clean enough, but the aura overall is just sort of oppressive. Though I don't think there is any safety issue, the vibe is such that I do not think a female traveler would feel comfortable. My biggest gripe is that everything in my room was cheap: the couple pieces of rickety furniture, the cheapest mattress money can buy, a lump of foam pillow, and nasty nasty nasty synthetic sheets. It doesn't have to be beautiful, but I want a good night's sleep, which isn't happening here. And when I get up, I want a shower. My second floor room had NO water pressure, so I finally gave up on the refreshing shower idea, since I did not have 45 minutes to spend under a dribble (literally) of water. But as noted, the host (owner?) is very nice. He puts out a good basic breakfast. The RPInn appears to be a labor of love, and I wish him luck. I hope he reads these reviews, because he needs to understand his guests' expectations, however modest they may be. Also, it should be noted the owner gives a discount on your next stay if you write a review. That's okay, don't think I'll be needing that.

The first floor is dedicated to the history of the asylum, propaganda about how the asylum treated people better than other asylums did at the time (but I don't believe that at all) and details about what it took to renovate the space to become a hotel. The asylum is but one building in a cluster of at least 10 hospital buildings. All of the rest of them are still abandoned and in disrepair. In terms of walkability to anything nearby and blight immediately surrounding the hotel, it's not the best location. But the architecture and style was so cool to explore late at night when everybody else in the hotel was fast asleep. And yes, this place is pretty pricey to stay at but somehow the day that I checked prices, it was only $118 per night. There are not really many amenities... Rooms don't have a microwave or a fridge, even though the king room we were in had ample space to accommodate both. They also don't have a pool. And although we slept in through breakfast, I've read reviews that it's pretty lackluster. Definitely not a place I would spend $250+ a night to stay in. But if I could find it for less than $150 in the future, I l'd definitely stay there again!

I found it unwelcoming that the lobby is now located on the second floor. No one is there to greet you when you walk in. That is a MISS in my book. I pride all things on personalization and experience. Now, having said that - I might understand the layout better knowing there is a "museum" on the first floor. I'm assuming that revitalization and historical grants may have come into play on that one. None the less, my stay was wonderful. It was quiet and relaxing and close enough to all things BUFFALO! The staff was great, helpful and accommodating. The restaurant in the hotel is no longer open but they are serving drinks and light fare in the bar. I did not have the opportunity to check that out.
