Anyone who thinks Kansas is just dry, flat prairie needs to come to Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge (aka Kansas Wetlands Education Center). Kansas has wetlands! I saw seagulls here! This part of Kansas is very diverse, topographically and otherwise, and you can learn more about this area here at the education center. This is a great place for families with kids, because the indoor nature center has lots of hands-on displays and activities. If you visit at the right time, you might even get to meet one of the resident animals, like the possum I met. One of the more interesting displays here is the bloodworms display. It's gross but also fascinating, which is, frankly, what you want in a nature center display. Cheyenne Bottoms is a fun place to explore when you're in the area, and will give you a new appreciation for south central Kansas. read more

I was really surprised at how wonderful this area is. Driving by you wouldn't think that this was anything special but there is truly a whole world here that aught to be seen by people, respectfully of course. The visitors center has hours but you can drive through the wetlands whenever you want. I mean obviously you probably don't want to do it in the dead of night but I mean I think you could if you wanted to. We saw someone entering as we were leaving as the sun set, so maybe they know something we don't. There are a lot of paths to take with your car or on foot. You can actually see a lot of entry points on the various "highways" surrounding the area. We didn't really go that far in because I didn't want to ruin our rental and the roads are not paved. But if I ever come back, I'd consider finding a way through the visitors center to be guided through. Even if you end up just having a picnic at the edge, near the visitors center you will be amazed at the wildlife and their lovely sounds. read more

Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge is the best kept secret in Kansas! We passed it by for several years before finally deciding to stop. What a GREAT surprise! The amount and variety of wildlife is staggering. We had no idea that the habitat would support such a diverse range of species. It's easy to drive the well marked access roads at your own pace and take in all the natural beauty. The gift shop is a delightful surprise too. There are interesting exhibits and displays supported by quality souvenirs. Science has a strong place at this facility and you'll find gifts that foster the imagination. Slow down and take a look! read more

This beautiful facility offers great views of the area. There are exhibits and extremely helpful staff. You can walk the trails and they even offer guided van tours if you make reservations in advance. It's free to just walk in and look around. I'm not sure about any pricing for guided tours. I love the gift shop. I buy gifts for kids that engage their brains for a great price. Stop by and see the wetlands! read more
