Once you get past the overpriced garden furniture, the limited pet care range, and the slightly…read morealarming range of 'gifts' (apart from the scented Yankee candles, which I love), Whitehall has a fantastic selection of seeds, bulbs and plants. And while it's fairly expensive, the plants here are far, far better cared for than in cheaper places such as B&Q. The other advantage of buying from a proper garden centre like this is the fact that you can ask expert advice. In the outdoor area of the centre there's a covered Information booth where knowledgeable staff are on hand to answer gardening questions, whether you need advice on growing your own veg or planting up borders and pots. On my last visit they helped me choose fruit bushes that would thrive in the partially shaded borders of my garden. There's a late night shopping and supper evening once a month, when the Wild Poppy Restaurant serves up a full three-course meal, including a veggie option. I've never tried the supper, but I have enjoyed a delicious slice of coffee and walnut cake with a cup of tea.

Highchairs for babies are also available. The food is generally excellent with generous portions and healthy options all at reasonable prices. Parking is available but the entrance car park is usually full and you'll end up in the spillover car park a couple of minutes walk away.

A truly enormous garden centre on the eastern outskirts of Cardiff, conveniently situated adjacent…read moreto junction 29 of the A48M where it meets the old A48 Newport Road. It's a popular shopping destination in its own right, and is actually part of the large UK-wide Wyevale chain. As well as an enormous range of plants, seeds, gardening tools and gardening supplies, it sells all sorts of gardening-related merchandise, such as garden buildings, garden furniture, pet supplies, books, ornaments, greeting cards, toys, clothing etc. Their prices aren't the cheapest, but it's all in one place and the quality is not bad (and it is getting very hard to find independent high-quality traditional nurseries, these days). Many of the staff are not that expert in the plants, though - certainly not compared with the horticultural or botanical expertise that resides in parts of the British gardening fraternity. That said, they always seem to be pretty friendly and willing to help, and the whole experience is rather less intimidating than it can be in some traditional nurseries. For those living in hope of a dry summer, there is an extensive range of barbecues and barbecue supplies. (Note: worth getting in stocks of charcoal, as there is always a run on supplies at the first sign of Bank Holiday sun). They also have a hire service for a very extensive range of garden and building machinery, if buying your own rotovator or mini-digger seems something of an indulgence. Perfect for the would-be 'Bob the Builder' (or 'Bob y Bildar'). There's a decent sized cafe, which is quite pleasant outside the week-end peak times, although there's no escaping the warehouse 'architecture'. It's very popular with pensioners during the week. At week-ends, the whole place is packed by families on an afternoon out, which makes for a slightly more stressful shopping experience. The centre has toilets and is designed to be accessible for wheel-chair users. The Wyevale website is quite interesting for the novice gardener, with a 'plant finder' facility, which tells you what you can grow in the soil and aspect of your garden.

The centre is also home to a decent little book shop and a café, and it sells jewellery, clothes, pet-related products, farm-style foods and even fresh Welsh meat, jams and chutneys! Blooms even offer an equipment hire service, so you can hire garden and building machinery rather than go out and buy it if you only need it for a one-off occasion. Some of the stock can be a bit on the expensive side, but I think most big nurseries are the same, and at least you can browse around lots of different departments under one roof here.

I have already written a review but I cannot see it anywhere?…read moreMy previous review explained that a member of staff was very rude to me. I also explained that customer service/focus is poor. Maybe its just me because the reviews seem to be quite good. However, if my review wasn't published then how do we get a balanced view? I have been going to this garden centre for several years and have not and will not go back again. I have never felt valued as a customer. Please ensure this information is acknowledged. Brackenwood is tucked away on the right of the long bumpy drive up to the Leigh Court estate. It is far and away one of the best garden centres I have ever been to. The plants are all of excellent quality and are really reasonably priced- they do great deals so you can get 10 alpines or bedding plants for £14.50. And they have a wide selection of shrubs and trees as well as loads of perennials, bulbs, vegetables, seedlings and herbs. There's also some beautiful house plants, RSPB approved bird tables, very reasonably priced pots and everything you would ever need for an allotment. Unlike the big chains, the staff here are incredibly helpful and know their stuff. And if, like us, you have a dad that is less than enthused about your plant-mania, there is a really sweet little cafe you can deposit him in so he doesn't moan. It's called Hazels and they do a mean selection of teas and indulgent cakes as well as sandwiches, hearty soups and a varied kids menu.

This means not only do you get some unusual plants making it a horticultural goodie bag for gardeners, but you also get plants that are used to the local climate. Plants range in size - there are some great specimen plants here to have a more instant garden feel as well as cheaper younger plants. All are in great condition with plenty of roots to the point where if you choose wisely you can split them and get two plants for the price of one. They have a bargain corner of those which have gone over but will come back in a few seasons or with a good pruning, so if you know your stuff then you can pick up a real bargain. The plants area outside is set out in handy sections - so if you have a shady corner where everything you plant dies then head to the back and there is a whole section of plants that will love that area. The staff are very happy to help, knowledgeable and perpetually cheery. The garden centre-y bit is well stocked, with the focus on what you can use now well-displayed. The cafe is always busy as the owners know that nothing goes better than pottering round a nursery with friends is to sit down and natter afterwards.

The emphasis is on locally sourced stuff, so you're unlikely to get something flown in from South Africa that's going to die within a fortnight. The staff are all chipper and friendly, and will answer your questions no matter how basic they are. The views over the River Avon and of the Suspension Bridge really are second to none. Add to this a café with absolutely scrumptious cake and you've got somewhere that's worth a visit even if you're not planning to pick up any plants (though that's not to say you won't).
