Kaikoura Boutique Hotel - the room

EXCELLENT! The hosts…read morerunning it are warm and wonderful, helpful with reservations and very knowledgeable about the area. We stayed in the larger rooms in the main building, which are clearly larger and better equipped than the single studio rooms on the outside perimeter. Breakfast options were not as extensive as we would have hoped and the rooms lack HVAC (which rarely would be an issue, except we happened to be in town during the recent heat wave...) but otherwise it appears to CLEARLY be the best option when staying in Kaikoura. Don't hesitate to stay here, it's the best thing going in the area!

I found this hotel on the internet, and was pleased that the pictures posted totally did justice to the reality. Located in an historic building that had been completely renovated, the effect is absolutely quaint and charming. Robin and Peter, the hosts, were extremely helpful as well as being very friendly. Hubby and I felt we would have liked get to know them each better. When we tried to book at a local restaurant, but had difficulties over the internet, Robin stepped in and called the restaurant direct and arranged a reservation at the exact time we wanted at a table with a perfect view. We had a room on the courtyard, off the back of the main building, and my only complaint, if any, was that the rooms were quite small. The rooms inside the main hotel itself, have the panoramic view of the Esplanade and the coastline, if you are willing to pay the extra. The courtyard, however, was quite lovely and charming, and once the hedges grow to full height, will be private for guests, as well. It was very chilly the night we stayed, and it would have also been nice to have an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to huddle around with our wine. Other things we appreciated were the use of common areas, as well as the free WIFI for guests. We were only sorry we couldn't stay longer. Next time...

Even though it was only for a night, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The George…read more This boutique hotel is noted as being 5-star, and it was just that. Loved the location right across Hagley Park, convenient to many places, and they provide free parking. Even though this hotel is a bit pricier than other places I searched, it is well worth it. Many places aren't as nice, not conveniently located, and overnight parking will cost you $$, which you factor into the cost, it's actually the same price. Once we stepped into the lobby, you can feel a certain level of comfortness, elegance, and sophistication. This hotel is not modern, but doesn't feel outdated. There's a distinctive quality. We were warmly greeted by the concierge/front desk person. He was very friendly, helpful, informative, hospitable, and made us feel very welcomed. Our room was a decent size with a lot of natural light coming in. With the park across, you have excellent privacy. One of the perks was the heated bathroom floors! They also FREE guest laundry. That was another reason why I chose this hotel because it was our last stop, and we could do laundry before heading home. One of the housekeepers was really nice and kind. The staff overall were friendly. It's the small details and kind gestures that made our stay memorable, even if it was just for one night. Providing complimentary coffee or tea when we arrived, the extra care and effort when we needed something, and giving us a free teddy (George) bear too! I'll definitely come back to stay at The George on my next visit to Christchurch!

A bit pricey relative to other "luxury" hotels. No real grounds to speak of. Hotel definitely geared to those 65+ with decor and piped in scent that reminded me of my papaw. Would elevate to five star if updated.

It is conveniently located literally next to the Tramway Restaurant and next to several restaurants and boutiques and within walking distance to RE:Start mall, and the Art Museum. Staff was very friendly, helpful and quick to assist us with our luggage. In addition, they were very kind and happy to assist us in locating the sites we were interested in seeing. Our room was very clean, modern and had AC!! In the room were the important conveniences to me- a safe, mini fridge, microwave and hair dryer. Our particular room had a nice huge window with a view of one of the many art murals they have around the city. In addition, they even printed out a notification that I guess was sent to the hotel Informing us of our one way excursion to Queenstown with our pick up time for the next am at our hotel and other specifics which was slid under our door in a nice envelope. I would highly recommend this hotel due for all the above reasons. Their breakfast is fairly good and decent- ranging from cold/hot cereals , fruits to meats/veggies. They even have vegemite and marmite if you've never tried it.

The hotel lobby is quite small, as is the restaurant and the breakfast buffet is more limited than other hotels. The gym has just a few machines and some free weights in it but it has a sauna and two full-size bathrooms for guest to use. Elevators are tiny and take forever to get to you, and they also weirdly malfunction and send you down when you were starting to go up. Overall though, it is clean and modern and a nice hotel.

This place was such a great find! I was headed to Hanmer when I saw this place and after a long…read moredrive from Christchurch and bumper to bumper traffic in the rain, I was ready to get off the road for a respite. Apparently this place is brand spanking new from renovations as it went into disrepair per the previous owners. It has 3 thermal pools of varying temps, a cold dip pool, a sauna all located in a fenced area. There are changing rooms, an infrared sauna, and an indoor hightemp thermal pool with pano windows looking out in a bldg down the path from the main visitor center and café. Each thermal pool is great and has naturally occurring algae, which you can rub on your skin or even eat if you are brave enough. The sauna is fantastic as well and the cold dip pool is invigorating! It is big enough for one person and has a ladder to ease yourself in if you don't want to do a full dunk. I highly recommend starting off in the sauna, doing the cold dunk, and then soaking in each of the thermal pools. It was so relaxing! I went when it was raining, and though some were put off by this, I loved it! It was extra relaxing because of the rain and the fact the rain caused less people to be in the pools. I had two of the pools all to myself! They do offer lockers, but honestly, my things were fine being hung by the thermal pools. Nobody seemed to mess w/anyone else's things. They also have a nice café here and I had a delicious steak n ale pie w/a ginger beer at a very reasonable price. You can rent a room here, as well. The day use price was fairly reasonable for use of the pools, saunas, and changing rooms. The staff were very friendly as well and the young man that checked me in was super helpful in explaining everything and even giving me a bit of history about the place. All in all a fantastic experience! I spent 4hrs there and left feeling like a rejuvenated human noodle w/a full belly and a contented soul!

This is the worst accommodations we have experience during our over 60 day stay in New Zealand…read more The room had lots of black mold in the shower, mold around the toilet fittings and mold growing in the corners. The room heater could not be turned off and remained very hot for over 24 hours. We tried opening the windows to cool things down but biting Sand Flies kept getting into the room. This was during the New Zealand summer. We also smelled a very strong odor of cigarette smoke when we opened the windows . They hadn't bothered to clean an ash tray full of cigarette butts! The paint work was old and scratched up. The toilet had broken free from the floor, The carpeting was lifting up and peeling up around the room heater. I can't believe they charged $358/night for this room. The sauna facilities had an 18" band of thick slippery green algae around the rims and "Therapeutic" black algae most everywhere else. But what's worse is the numerous biting sand flies that we and other quests continuously needed to swat away. When we entered the steam room... the handle fell off the door and the sauna benches had numerous long wooden splinter in the benches over an inch long! We went in the bathhouse and it too was horribly unclean dirt and spider webs full of dead bug carcasses that must have been there for months uncleaned, soap stains draining over the walls and broken old wire mesh window with peeling paint, it was unbelievably dirty for a bath house. I will try to post pictures, please review then to see what I experienced here.
