Red Barn Theatre - Welcome to the theatre

Quaint regional theatre offering plays during the summer season…read more Found this place online and it looked like a fun activity for our group. It was easy to find, as it was right on the main highway - just look for the classic comedy and tragedy faces on the side of the big red barn. I ordered the tickets online - very easy - and only $17 a seat (you pick them up when you get there from a little building at the base of the barn). Parking is free and on the grass just outside the barn - I'd estimate it holds about 100 people. I got our tickets just a couple of weeks out and had three seats on the aisle in the second row. The stage is pretty small, and the production we saw (Population 485) had minimal scenery and props - in fact it was mostly just the 6 actors (who all had real jobs - librarian, factory worker, graphic artist, retiree) and a few costume changes. The actors played multiple parts but it was easy enough to keep things straight and they put their all into doing something that they love, even if it isn't their main job. Downstairs in the barn are the bathrooms and a place to buy snacks - water and popcorn was around $3, very economical. If you go, keep your expectations in check - this is a local regional theatre, NOT the Gutherie so expect dedicated hardworking "actors" that aren't quite as polished as those on Broadway. Definitely something worth seeing.

The outside is beautifully landscaped and the inside is comfortable with theater seating and lots of ambience. They enhance your experience with the smell of fresh popcorn and other snacks and beverages. They also displayed artwork on the wall by local artists. There wasn't one thing I did not like about our experience. If you are in the Rice Lake area, make this happen!!

Set your phones to silent, grab some popcorn, and peek with me behind the red velvet curtains of this historic theater. Affectionately known by locals as "The Jewel Box" of Red Wing, the Sheldon's impressively ornate interior would upstage that of many other theaters. The lobby makes a dramatic entrance, and the auditorium steals the show with gorgeous murals, and gold and ivory plaster sculptures adorning the walls. The Sheldon's history is as dramatic as its decor, the building having survived two fires and an explosion that blew off the roof. Opening its doors in 1904, it hosted Vaudeville shows travelling through from Chicago to Minneapolis in its early years, and later converted to a movie house. Now it showcases live performances and lectures, as well as playing classic movies like Gone with the Wind. I fondly remember performing here in my teens, electricity in the air as we waited for our cue, hoping not to break a leg en pointe. Most recently I watched the amazing musical Glensheen here, and it brought down the house! A Sheldon experience is always magical for the audience and performers alike. This theater is a destination unto itself, and is certainly a tough act to follow. I give it 5 rounds of applause!

I've been wanting to get to a show for the last year and we finally got tickets to an Andy and Bing Christmas. Mick Sterling and Ben Utecht hosted the event with toe-tapping songs throughout the night. I haven't seen Mick since he was signing Joe Cocker's 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' at Bunkers Bar. It was great to hear his voice again. They played for at least two hours with a small intermission. Great show. The theatre is beautiful and so full of character. The intimacy of the place makes any seat a great one. I'll definitely be back for another show.

Crafted during the grand Victoria era, the interior and exterior boast arches, hand carved details, marble staircases and floors, walnut and oak woodwork and a 261 seat Victorian inspired theater. The craft of the building is breathtaking! Most recently, the former basement used primarily for storage has been converted into a beautiful bar called The Spirit Room. The idea came about during the 2020 pandemic when shows were at a stop for over 500 days. Flash forward to today and the new space boasts warm green tones in the lounge chairs and almost resembles Mancini's (for those who are native to Saint Paul, MN). I have yet to personally sit and enjoy a cocktail and small bite but this is now my second visit to the space and I appreciate what has been done. Additionally, I had the privilege to attend the 2025 Holiday Artisan Market where each vendor was scattered across the building including on stage and on the top level. The arrangement of this market was lovely as it got me more exposed to the theater where I could really appreciate the beauty. I wish the Mable Tainter great success in years to come! What a legacy thus far. Thank you!!
