Does it take a rocket scientist to run a camp? Nope…read more But when a rocket scientist* runs a camp, is the camp fantastic? Yes -- at least when it comes to Launch. (This is a review for the summer camp only, not the tutoring, which we've not tried.) Summer camp is, as previously noted, the bomb diggity. Our 10-year old and 6-year old both loved their two weeks there, loved all the STEM-y, fabulous projects they made: a copycat Operator game, gyroscope, perpetual motion device, magnetic art board, lava lamp, magic eight ball, pinball machine, marble maze, etc, etc, etc... Over the course of two weeks the projects were different each day and they were excited to show them off. It's clear that a lot of thought went into the programming. If there were even more emphasis on explaining the why and how scientific concepts behind all of these fun projects, the parents at least would love it even more. Campers are also introduced to Scratch, a baby programming app developed by MIT. The kids aren't using C++ / Java, but they do manipulate discrete strings of text (in colloquial English) to create games. Campers bring their own nut-free lunches, which they eat outdoors at the park whenever the weather permits. COVID precautions are thorough: There's a self-reported health screen every morning, a temperature check, and everyone remains masked indoors. Only nitpick: Campers don't get a lot of opportunities to run around at the park, which can feed into the doughy, weak, out-of-shape stereotype of math and science nerds. If my kids could play tag and run through a fountain at a playground on a 96F day, they'd be even happier campers. :) *Scott, the founder and owner, is literally a former rocket scientist, a.k.a. aerospace engineer! I loved the fact that there was no guessing what areas they would assist her, they completed a thorough assessment which detailed her areas of strength and weakness. Not only was I impressed, so was her teacher. My daughter has been attending for one month but she has made some remarkable progress. She really connects with her tutor and loves to show off what she has learned to her brother. They have great math games and even set the students up with a computer program to use at home. My teen attended the summer camp and had fun with the other campers. We traveled from out of town…read moreand stayed in a hotel for the week as a special experience for her. One of the days my daughter stated that she kept asking for help and was ignored by the teachers for over an hour. I double checked the class to confirm it stated all levels of sewing experience and it does, to include beginners. While my child has experience sewing for 10+ years and previous sew camps, it is my expectation that if she asked for help, she would not be ignored. On the last day, my teen was unable to put the dress she had sewed on as they forget to include a zipper in the pattern. She stated that she mentioned multiple times that week, what about the zipper, and was ignored. She bought a zipper on their field trip and my understanding is it was the teacher's responsibility to help create a pattern (i.e. include a zipper). My daughter's dress was ripped - she ended up crying before the fashion shoot as the straps were ripped as were the sides. A floor length dress made out of satin is impossible to put over your head, without a zipper. My daughter felt as if she was being gas lighted by one of the teachers when the other teacher realized the mistake as they tried to figure out how to get the dress on her, pin it with safety pins, etc. and the teacher blamed it on my child stating she never asked for a zipper. My daughter didn't want me to reach out but I met the owner and thought she was nice and figured she had no clue what transpired and she would want to learn from this so the team could improve. I reached out the next week, left a voice mail and never received a call back. I specifically stated I wanted to speak to the owner, listed her name and shared my number and that I wanted to share some feedback from the teen camp. What could have been an amazing experience ended really poorly with a bad taste. While my daughter had fun, she should have left with a dress that wasn't ripped and for $900 I would expect the teachers to make sure the dress was actually functionable and that the child would leave with a completed product that works. If the class states all levels, someone should have made sure this dress had a zipper and my child didn't leave with a dress ripped on both sides and the top. Very disappointing.

At home, they put together the most amazing Broadways shows and we credit that to the love and humor that is part of the instruction and performances at Play On! We have seen our daughter literally grow up at Play On!, from her first after school class at age four to participating on the Saturday musical theater program and numerous one week summer camps. SHORT REVIEW: FIVE STARS…read more This is our second "semester" with Robofun and it is a great haven for children where they learn many skills for their future. LONGER REVIEW: I recently attended a tech event which focused on the future of AI and Big Data. When someone asked a big data person from IBM: "What are the important skills that children need today?" he replied: "Empathy, Teamwork, Aesthetics and Creativity" These are all of the things that Robofun provides for my daughter. At first glance it looks like the kids are just having fun but the work that the children do teaches them skills that they can apply to their future selves. The founder, Laura Hart, is a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education and she genuinely cares about children and what's best for them. She's also a nice person so naturally her staff and teachers are great at what they do. They care for the kids and teach them skills in a way that helps build the children's confidence and create really unique projects. I usually get pretty bored at summer camp presentations but at RoboFun, when the children presented their work, I was so impressed with the robots they created where they coded, how some composed music, how they worked closely with their teammates, and proudly presented their projects. This is an excellent learning environment for my children and they cannot wait to attend every day! FIVE STARS
