Overall, this place hits the mark on many levels. The atmosphere is so cozy and inviting that you will definitely want to stay awhile. The spot is cute and they have so much fun decor. A lot of different beers to choose from and awesome food. We got the Brussel sprouts to start which were delicious and huge. Luckily we split an entree and were stuffed. We couldn't even finish it. We got the Yorkie yorky hot beef with mashed potatoes. So delicious. This place will definitely exceed your expectations my friends. Don't miss out. read more

This cozy little pub has an authentic, homey feel of a British pub, although it is a very small place. It is usually crowded in the evening and especially on weekends, when the parking can be bad (hard to believe they can fit so many people on there, sometimes! But now it has improved since there's the upstairs.) The menu is very good, and the selection of their beers is stellar. January 28 2013 was a very sad day indeed: The Cheshire Cat Pub burned down to the ground from a fire that apparently started inside the building. The stone walls were left standing but apparently are not safe. At this time, the fire department has not deemed this to be arson. The owners have vowed to reopen, which was reinforced by the outpouring of love and sadness on their Facebook page (look for "Cheshire Cat Pub Regulars" in Facebook.) There will be a fund raiser to help the staff which have all lost their jobs due to the fire; details can be found on facebook under "Cheshire Cat Community "Tip Jar"" Kudos to them, and good luck. Popped in for a weekday lunch and the Cat was hopping but not slammed. The patio is perfect, enough room to move, lots of umbrellas and holy garden back there!! We were served by 3 different people - not sure if that is their service model, or if we just caught them on a weird day, but service was slow. Empty drinks sat for way longer than is appropriate (especially outside, and with guests who are day boozing!) lunch is generally a quicker pace of service too but we found it took forever to get our food. But when it came? All was pretty well forgiven. Fish and chips were just about perfect, even though I got shorted on fries, both literally and figuratively. I seem to have gotten the bottom of the basket, and not very much, but what I did get was good. Fish was cooked perfectly and HUGE, so I didn't really miss the fries anyway. My dining partner had the burger of the day, and a whole ton of fries (*pout*) and they were amaaaaazing. In the end, getting billed was also longer than expected, but on the way out we found carp creamery ice cream, so another redemption. I can't give it a 5, but it's damn close. read more

Being the fish and chip fanatic that I am, it was inevitable that I would end up at the Cheshire Cat as soon as i possibly could. We went in on a Friday evening and the place was hopping. After waiting for a table, we ordered right away as we knew that we were going to share one order oof the fish and chips. First off, I am going to start off by saying that this place goes way past the 5 stars for service. Even though they were really busy, they kept coming to the table and making sure we had everything we needed and were comfortable. The fish and chips are made with their own recipe of from scratch batter. It was absolutely DELICIOUS! The fish was perfectly cooked and the batter was crispy and just the right amount. The fries were your standard fresh cut fries. After eating, I made my way to the register to pay because I wanted to make room for the rest of the people lined up and happened to see sticky toffee pudding go by and just happened to mention that I wanted to come back and have that next time because it looked sooo good. After paying, I went back to the table and the hostess brought over a sticky toffee pudding with ice cream on the house because it was our first time there. I gotta say - I was blown away. The ice cream was also made from scratch in house and as far the sticky toffee pudding goes - this one just hit the spot. We are definitely putting this place on the 'going back to many times list'. I haven't eaten here yet, but I have gotten their pies to go, which are delicious when heated up! The crust is flaky and my favourite is the lamb one. They also have elk(!) and steak, among other fillings. They also carry ice cream from the creamery...so good and locally made! I have tried dark sea salt caramel and London fog, and both are so unique and absolutely sinful :) Update: I finally came here to eat and was happy with the experience. Servers were super friendly and the place is SO cozy (i sat upstairs)! What I tried: - Beer: They have a great selection on tap, sadly no flight but I suggested they bring it back! - Seafood pub pie: delicious buttery pastry and hearty filling, probably my fav! - Yorkshire beef pudding: the crust was too much at times, but went well with the white sauce. The beef was the star and was tender and very flavourful. - Elk sandwich: the meat was tender and the cheese went really well! - Poutine: Just like the one at Alice's cafe, fries are thick and gravy is rich. Just wish there were more curds! - Amaretti cheesecake: rich, dense, but couldn't really taste the amaretti, still a great cheesecake! I went here with my parents and my in-laws. I had heard great reviews about this place, but have to admit that I was a little skeptical when my in-laws suggested it as it is in a old converted school house and across the street from a landfill(!) I am a city girl through and through, so trekking out to Carp was a departure from my regular activities. Anyway, we made reservations and I'm glad that we did, because the place filled up quickly for lunchtime on a Saturday. We were seated promptly and ordered our drinks. Drinks came quickly. We then ordered our meals. We waited a while and then everyone's meal came expect for mine and my mother-in-law's. Everyone else was almost finished theirs by the time the final 2 meals came. (They did make it up to us though, and I'll discuss that later). So I'll talk about the food first. Three of us had the Hot Beef and Yorkie Platter (including me). The Yorkshire pudding was divine. Crisp on the outside, yet soft and gooey on the inside, quite possibly the best Yorkshire pudding I have ever tasted (besides by mom's of course). The beef was good, thinly sliced and flavourful, although a little fatty for my liking. The gravy was rich but also a tad on the salty side (although the other 2 who had the same dish, did not find the gravy too salty - I have come to accept that I like low sodium dishes and almost everything I eat unless I made it myself from scratch will taste too salty for me). It came with a side and I chose fries which were good and plentiful. Others ordered the Elk, Ale and Wild Mushroom Pie, the Goat Flatbread (flatbread topped with goat cheese, grilled veggies and salad - the salad was literally on the flatbread, which I thought was unusual) and the Fisherman's Plate (a seafood stew with garlic bread). Everyone seemed the thoroughly enjoy their meals. And everyone's meal smelled so delicious. It might be because the place is small, but every time they brought someone their food (whether it be at our table or another table), you could smell the delicious aroma. The food here is a notch up from what you would expect of regular pub food. So I'll get back to their little goof up. They readily apologized that 2 of the meals came significantly after the other meals. So to make up for it they offered us 2 free desserts (there were 6 of us). The free desserts were ice cream sandwiches (2 chocolate chip cookies - like the size of a "Chips Ahoy" cookie- with vanilla ice cream in the middle). It was kind of small to share one between 3 people, but I appreciated the gesture. They were not having a great day because then their computer broke down and they had to tally the bill up by hand (well, with a calculator). The calculations were correct, we paid our bill and then left. Despite the non-smooth course of the visit, I would come back. The food was good and different and they readily acknowledged their mistakes and made efforts to patch things up. The fact that this city princess is willing to drive out to Richardson Side Road past the dumpster to visit this place again says a lot! read more

Had heard about The Cat and intended to get there - when it burned down. :-/ Well, now it's up and running again and we were hearing good stuff so we made the trek out to there to check it out. Arranged to meet friends for 6p. Got there and the parking lot was full, had to park on the street. Went in - friends had gotten there a bit earlier to put names on the waiting list with a total expected wait time of 45 minutes. Squeezed into the bar and carved out a corner to stand in, got some beers and in no time we were called for our table. Got seated upstairs. Waiter was attentive. (I'm betting he was also new! Didn't have a practiced air - but he was still wonderful.) Food came - it was delicious! I had the tourtiere and hubby had fish and chips. Both were fantastic. This pub has more of a 'France' attitude to the service. They let us sit and talk instead of giving us the bill - which was really pleasant. So - be prepared - you do have to ask for your bill when you are ready to get it. Owner came by to check on us personally. Really wonderfully service oriented. Of note: As we were leaving at 8:30, no lineup. Next time we'll probably go over a bit later - say for a 8p dinner, instead of a 6p dinner, which is more in line with our normal schedule anyway. Crowd avoidance technique. ;-) Would I recommend: Yes Would I return: Yes - it's a bit of a drive for us (1/2 hour) so we won't become regulars, but I definitely think we will make the effort on occasion to get out there. read more

I just had my first experience at this little pub that is based out of a stone house. It's small, cramped and has a nice charm about it. The place was packed for lunch and packed with the best things...LOCALS! They have a decent selection of beers on tap and I went with a trusty Newcastle. We stood around waiting and after sometime we were shown to a table upstairs. The upstairs reminds me of an attic lined with tables. It's surprisingly larger than I thought. I had a beef melt on this visit and everything on it was really good...minus the beef which I found really overcooked but maybe that's the style? The beef did have nice flavour though. It had what tasted like home made horseradish mayo on fresh bread and local cheese. The fries were also good. The menu looks delicious and I don't doubt I'll be back in the near future. Even though the place was packed the servers were fast. They messed up my bill, quickly apologized, fixed it and had me out of there in no time! Other places in Kanata would take up to 20 minutes to turn that mistake around...trust me! read more

I was told this place has good fish n chips! I was told it would be busy and to go early! I was told the portions are a good size! I'm glad i was told this!! Its everything that i've been told! Saturday We got there at 5pm. The parking lot was filled! We only waited a few minutes and got seated upstairs. Our server was friendly and quick. I ordered the cats famous fish n chips (haddock) 2 big pieces of haddock - not too oily. A handful of fries ( could have been a bit more), creamy cole slaw... was ok. Otherwise, very satisfying meal :) Next time i want to try the Hot Beef and yorkshire. Very good experience! 4.5 stars overall. Probably go up to a 5star the next time i visit. read more

Since I moved the Carp area 5 years ago, I have to say, that this is an excellent place if you love beer or scotch. They have an excellent selection of both, and have even brought in beer based on client requests. The food is great, and the atmosphere excellent. It is an old school house from the 1880's converted to a 2 floor pub. It has recently been renovated, adding more seating, and upgraded the kitchen. It also has a wonderful patio for those warm days. My only complaint... Parking. Never has enough! They even expanded it, and its still crammed to the hilts. Make a reservation for dinner. read more

Went to the Cat for the first time in a few years right before Canada lost to the USA in the world juniors - wah wah. Food is always great, beer list is always good. Minus 1 star because one of our group ordered a Hot Toddy. Much to our vegan friend's chagrin, the drink definitely had a half centimeter of butter in it and mostly tasted of rum. First time returning a drink in our life, the server insisted "there are lots of ways to make a hot toddy and we make ours with butter and rum". was pretty defensive. Sorry! I can't imagine anyone in a British pub or anywhere in Canada expecting hot buttered rum when they order a hot toddy. Please please for anyone else get a good hot toddy recipe going at the bar, cheers. read more

Just had a meal at the CC Pub. Food was just so so. My husbands burger was overcooked, and the bacon was hard. My Reuben sandwich was good, but very greasy. What really turned us off, was the TERRIBLE SERVICE. We were sitting for a long time before my husband finally asked if we could order drinks, then the food was very slow to come, after they finally took our order and we ended up cancelling dessert, as that too was taking too long. To be honest, the servers were not attentive at all and seemed spaced out. Very disorganized service. As my husband said, "we won't be back". Lots of other great pubs to pick from in the Stittsville area. I would suggest trying one of them instead. read more

Been here twice. The first time was about 2 weeks ago with a friend as part of our weekly get together. That was great. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. However, I took my wife for a date last night and found the whole experience off-putting. Maybe because it was a Sunday, they had their B crew working, but the service was atrocious. It was far from busy, about 10 customers in 3 groups, us included. The hostess told us immediately that we would have to be out within an hour and a half. That was ok, but a strange way to greet a customer. We were seated on the patio. The first server came to the table just as we were sitting, and asked if we were ready to order. Obviously we weren't. She kindly offered to bring us water while we look at the menu. That was the last time she visited the table. She went straight to another table near by and chatted with her friends there for about 15 minutes, and never even looked back. I went in to ask for some one to take our order, and the server inside just barked as I walked in, "wear a mask, bud.". I'm 20 years the guy's senior, and a customer. Being referred to as "bud" was a little insulting especially with the tone. Was debating leaving right then, but I asked for some service instead. Then a third person came to our table to take the order and from then on things were average. food was ok. The experience was enough to make me not want to return. For the price, there are many better places without the hassle. Willing to give it another try on a different night, but not making any plans to return soon. read more

Wow! How did I not ever hear about this place until now?! About a week ago, I was asked if I had checked out The Cat (which meant nothing to me at that time) but now I can understand why locals simply refer to it as The Cat. I know I will be back soon! The Cheshire Cat is an old English style pub located in Carp, Ontario. Since it is a very popular spot, I would recommend making a reservation (which they only due from Sun - Wed). The Cat offers British style favourites with a bit of a twist and on the front cover of their menu they list special offerings which is what I chose from. I had a turkey pannini with a strawberry compote paired with a cold strawberry soup. The food was delicious! I love the fact that they were using seasonal ingredients in such a unique way too. The serving staff were friendly and accommodating and overall the atmosphere was enjoyable. I'm looking forward to my next visit where I hope I can find a seat on their patio to listen to some live jazz! read more

This is a nice British pub, best pub in Kanata imo. It's quite tiny so it can feel cramped at times when it's full, especially downstairs. There was a fire that ravaged the place but it's pleasing to see it was rebuilt maintaining all of it's charm. They have a good selection of beer available. Not bad, Kanata. On a recent trip to Bonnechere Caves, three of us decided to stop by here for a late lunch (instead of other local stops in Eganville or even Renfrew). That was a really good decision. We're not usually big fans of pub-fare food, but when there's a good patio available and it's a glaringly nice day - really, why not? I had the classic mushroom steak and pie and my other two companions had the Cat's famous fish and chips. The portions are huge! Mine came with mashed potatoes and seasonal roast veg - all local from the Carp's Farmer's Market I hear - and with how fresh they were - I believe it! My mushroom and steak pie was delicious, and the mashed potatoes were bang on (pardon the pun). I also had a taste of the fish and chips, and that wasn't half bad either. They also have a good variety of beer on tap, although for that nice sunny afternoon, I was particularly pleased that they had the Stiegl Radler on tap. Very nice! The service was friendly albeit a little slow (I hear it gets busier, so I would qualify the customer traffic that day to be normal). The only perceived downside is the occasional whiff of the industrial (probably from the neighbours), but to be sure, not enough to deter. Besides, I would not mind being seated inside next time - it does feel quite cozy and really lives up to the pub-feel (what little I saw of the inside anyway). The server was great and paid just the right amount of attention, letting us linger and take our time, making sure out drinks never got empty. The first time I went there was for my friend's rehearsal dinner five years ago and I came back this week! :) The new patio is amazing (and I hear it's beautiful at night-time in the summer) and the food was DELICIOUS. Being a Brit myself I often feel like these attempts to provide traditional British fare in North America end up being quite cringe worthy however the Cheshire Cat hits the mark fairly well. The pub is helped by the surrounding area that is somewhat reminiscent of busy countryside roads. Walking into the pub the decor instantly transports you to my native country, with beer mats lining the walls and a traditional bar serving a variety of drinks. For starters we tried the sausage rolls and while they didn't quite match Greggs (fellow Brits will know what I'm talking about) they were very tasty and came with a sort of ketchup and mustard along with salad. For a main I tried out the fish and chips and was somewhat disappointed that it was what I often see in Canada: Fish and Fries, not proper chips. Other people in my party had the Cottage Pie and I think I'll do the same on my next visit, it looked amazing! We didn't have desert on this occasion so I'm looking forward to seeing what they have to offer next time. In summary, this attempt at a slice of Britain is admirable and it definitely provided me with the shot of my culture that I needed to continue my life in a foreign country. read more

We were saddened when we learned of the fire at the Cheshire Cat and were anxious to go back once it opened...glad we did, but won't be back any time soon. The ambiance was good, recaptured the feeling of the old English pub, the food was like it used be be, excellent. The service was one of the worst experiences that we've had. Food was brought to the table and that was the last we saw of any service. We couldn't get anyone's attention to get another drink, finally I had to go to the bar and order my own. After, the service was the same. No attention given, we had to flag someone else to get our bill. Our initial server was too busy playing his 'lounge lizard' act amongst the patrons - it will be along time before there is a next time. read more

A+ for atmosphere! This pub is full of charm from the stone exterior to the gorgeous wooden tables. The first floor has the bar scene AND tables, while upstairs is strictly a dining room. We probably would have preferred the coziness of downstairs but upstairs was hopping as well with many family gatherings. Sunday featured a roast and yorkshire pudding classic, so I was lucky that two people at my table ordered it and I could sample. The meat was very tender with amazing mashed potatoes and some pretty heirloom vegetables were close by. I myself ordered the famous fish and chips, half chips and half cesar salad at no extra charge. The fish was extremely tender and tasted like it was straight from a lake. I've had lake fish before, I know. The breading was nice and crispy, as were the fries. I appreciated how there were two lemons wedges on the plate, one for my fish and one for the cesar salad. My only disappointment of the meal was how the plate was hot. I appreciated the combo, but salad on the same hot plate became warm. Next time, (there will be a next time!) maybe I'd go for a separate plate or I'll just commit to fries. A pint of Beau's was a nice accompaniment to the hearty meal. Service was very friendly with no confusion bringing a drink from the bar to the dining room upstairs. This literally is 'As good as it gets'! In fact my parents told me not to write this review because they didn't want anyone finding out about their favourite watering hole. This place is an old school house that has been renovated into a pub. It's owned by arguably the nicest couple I've run into in a long time (they gave us a free meal when we moved away), and they are very very good to their regulars. It's a small place, but they've worked well with the space. The upstairs is open with a huge screen projector that they pull down for FIFA or important hockey games. The downstairs is decorated with art from local artists, and a nice wooden fireplace in the center of the room. During the summer, there's a very nice patio with heaters. The food isn't always spectacular, but it's pretty darn good pub food. The only 'problem' (if we can call it that) with this place is that it's just so darn small. And now that it's becoming even more popular, space within the restaurant (and for parking) is very limited. Unless you're going in during lunch, you'll want to make a reservation. The crowds can sometimes take away some of the charm, but this place deserves every single customer! read more

** 4.5 stars ** Talk about pleasantly surprised! I came by with friends a few days ago, for pub trivia. I didn't see the entire place, since we were seated on the ground floor. But it's as small - but cozy - as previous Yelpers have said. And as someone from out of town, I definitely noticed the local-friendly atmosphere - from the big chalkboard outside taking a playful dig at one of the regulars, who needed stitches after taking an inebriated St. Paddy's Day tumble - to the interaction between the guy who ran the trivia (who I presume is the owner/manager?) and some of the locals in attendance. The drink selection is tasty. I'm a bit of a lightweight, so I had half-pints of Waupoos Cider and a shandy, respectively. My other friends enjoyed their drinks as well. And when the trivia was over, we all got samples of an IPA (which I think was brand-new to the pub, if I recall correctly). Service was good, and the food was tasty! I had the Thai Chicken wrap, which had the perfect combo of sweet, spicy and savoury, along with some fries. And the pub trivia was SO MUCH FUN. Granted, I think we landed somewhere in the middle of the pack (some of those questions were HARD!), but it was excellent. Two thumbs up, in my opinion. I've already told my friends that I want to come back here for more pub trivia, the next time I'm in town. I can see why it's so loved by the locals. read more
