When looking up this business earlier today, I was surprised to see the low rating pop up on Yelp. These are obviously outlier opinions and experiences as you can tell just how popular Cherrystone is with the local community by driving by during their hours of operation. I doubt many people care to hop online and write reviews but for a small town vet where word of mouth can travel even faster than online reviews (especially in areas where internet isn't always accessible), they wouldn't stay this busy if they weren't great at what they do. As for my personal experience, I could not love Cherrystone more! And especially Dr. Kay Geyer. You can tell she does this because it is what she loves and truly cares about the animals and community she serves. The wait may be long due to their popularity and walk in nature of their practice but it is always well worth it to see her. She takes her time with each patient and even makes a point to ask about their human companions, which always catches me off guard because I'm trying to rush to cover any info on my dog, not able to change gears to discuss myself, so she can get to the line of people still steadily coming in the office. She addresses every concern and treats my dog like an old friend being gentle and understanding of his tendency to be a bit uncooperative. Her prices are always fair and she never pushes medicine or treatments that are unnecessary. You can trust her and honestly, that means a lot when it comes to the care of our dearest family members. I originally learned of this practice from family members who would go on and on about how much they loved the vet here. My grandpa who doesn't have much time or patience for anything these days will drive from Martinsville to see Dr. Kay. Heck, I would even make my dog's vet visits during trips home to visit family when living two states away! I have been bringing him to Dr. Kay since around 2014. Unfortunately now that he's getting older, we need to find a vet a bit more local (which is why I was looking up their number today) but if a need ever arises when we are visiting family, I know exactly where I will go. And I recommend them to anyone I know in the area. I'm not sure what happened in the instances described in other reviews here but I just wanted to offer my experience which I believe reflects the experiences of the greater majority who have taken their pets to this practice. I doubt Dr. Kay has much time to read reviews online but if she ever happens to see this, I just want her to know the lasting impact she has made in her community and the lives of all those who have had the pleasure to meet her. She's truly one in a million and we could not thank her enough for taking care of our sweet boy and other family members' pets over the years. It will be a sad day when she decides to retire but after all the years of hard work and service, I hope she is also able to spend time doing whatever makes her happy. you can only get emergency care after hours if you're a client already, which makes no sense because it's an emergency

Wife took in our dog who was experiencing lethargy. He was diagnosed with an ulcer and was kept over night to be put on fluids and given an antibiotic. Pricing for his treatment was discussed and agreed upon at this time. Dog ended up being kept for over a week with zero contact from the vet. Multiple calls were made everyday to check on the status of his treatment, but we're always either unanswered or answered by someone with no knowledge of the status of our pet at all. Voicemails and requests with the receptionists to have his vet contact us were also met with no return calls. Flash forward to today's date and we were finally able to get someone with any idea whatsoever what was going on with our boy on the phone and we're informed that are bill was now nearly 4 times our agreed upon amount due to the combination of the accumulated boarding fees accured from his prolonged stay(again due to the fact that we were not contacted when he was ready to be picked up and had been unable to get anyone to tell us as much when calling ourselves) and the fact that his vet apparently took it upon themselves to administer several vaccines that were 1. Not something agreed upon or even requested upon his admission. 2. In no way related to the treatment he undergoing and 3. We're actually vaccines he was already up to date on, so we're entirely unneeded(and possibly even harmful) as well as unwanted. They are now refusing to budge on the price at all, even with regard to the unauthorized and unwanted vaccinations that were given for no conceivable reason and are essentially holding our pet hostage until we agree to pay off this outrages extortion fee they look to scam out of us. It breaks my heart to say that my family and myself are not able to shoulder the price of this con game at this time, so it's looking like we're just out of a family member due to the immense unprefesionalism and greed of these sheisty scam artists. It's an especially crushing loss as our dog was currently undergoing training to act as a service dog to our son who suffers with both autism and epilepsy, and had already played a big part in his emotional well-being, and who has already been greatly upset by the absence of his best friend this last week. All I was asking was to be charged fairly for the services my wife had requested and agreed upon and not be swindled out of hundreds of dollars by some shady vet administering unauthorized or even discussed treatment to my dog to turn a crooked profit out of a couple of marks. Would rate 0 out of 5 if could. Absolutely garbage company. Rot in hell, you souless bastards. read more

Having visited two other vets in the area, I was stunned at the lack of professionalism exhibited here. I dropped my kitty off to be spayed without any problem and came back to pick her up the next day. I was told to wait until the doctor could speak to me about aftercare, but an assistant came out about 5 minutes later and delivered her to me. I asked about the aftercare instructions, and I was told (direct quote): "The cut-rate vet doesn't talk to people who are rude." Point 1: I had never been anything but cordial and businesslike to anyone in that office. Point 2: Even if someone WERE rude, refusing to provide health guidance on that basis is telling, because it reveals the vet is more concerned about social courtesy than about THE PET'S HEALTH. Not only was I not spoken to, but I was not offered any after-care medication such as pain reliever, which I'd been offered by my personal vet on the two other occasions I'd had an animal spayed. (I only went to this vet because the shelter who sold her to me said she was spayed, but she wasn't, so the shelter agreed to cover the cost if I went to this particular vet.) One other thing worth mentioning: The vet was in violation of Virginia's reopening guidelines for COVID-19. There was no transparent barrier separating staff from customers; none of the five staff members I saw were wearing gloves OR masks; no social distancing guidelines were visible; and only a couple of the six or seven customers were wearing masks. As a 57-year-old with a history of pneumonia, asthma and bronchial infections, I am at high risk for the disease and cannot afford to risk my health because businesses refuse to follow state guidelines. This should be ESPECIALLY important to businesses entrusted with providing health care, whether it be to humans or our furry friends. I cannot stress highly enough how much I DO NOT recommend this place. One star is one too many. read more

I would not recommend this vet to anyone I know! Let me start off with a positive.. On April 29, 2024 Hunter was very kind and treated me as he did anyone else. My Vet Gretna Closed and my Puppy was experiencing a major problem and I contacted Cherrystone Vet Hospital to see if my puppy could be seen and the person answering phone did not want to speak with me and asked Hunter to. They did see her that day, the original greeting receptionist was not kind at all (I have medical issue for speech not being 100% as intelligible as most folks.) Thankfully Hunter quickly assisted me to get me signed in. The tech performed blood work and the doctor came in but NEVER touched my puppy she was dripping blood on the floor. They sent me away with antibiotics and said call if not better. I contacted them on May 11 as my puppy was experiencing a plethora of issues that were extremely concerning and she was out of antibiotics. I was told by the receptionist that I would have to call back on Monday and someone would refill her antibiotics. When I contacted back May 13, 2024 explaining the major concern at 8:30am I was told someone would be in contact with me at 12:30pm I called back as I and was told they were busy and someone would call me back. May 14, 2024 no one had contacted me back so I contacted another local Vet and they said based on symptoms come on RIGHT away! So I did, my Puppy had a workup and had to have to be kept for massive dosage of antibiotic due to having TWO serious infections and was requiring SURGERY same day as urgent visit (yesterday)! After showing the new local vet the antibiotics given to my puppy they stated this was too small of a dose and was dosed for a puppy half the size, which is why she did not respond to it. My new vet called Cherrystone Vet Geyer and I received a call from a staff member at Cherrystone with an apology but honestly my puppy was not helped and needed urgent care and all I wanted was help for her. Genuinely disappointed in the lack of care I received, I do not care about the rudeness towards me. I'm not sure if I was treated how they treat most of their patients or if I was treated different because i'm different and they simply didn't want to deal with someone who wasn't a healthy and normal pet parent. Regardless would like to give this review for someone who is thinking of becoming a patient to consider you may not get the care you are hoping for. read more

Absolutely disgusted with the lack of professionalism in this establishment. I was told my dog was paralyzed and decided to have him put to sleep. The vet apparently forgot to put him to sleep and in the middle of the night we got a phone call wanting to know if we would like to put him to sleep because he's not getting better. Now they are trying to charge me for keeping him awake. What a terrible thing to do to someone who has lost their pet. read more

I have brought my animals to Cherrystone for quite sometime. Kay Geyer is very caring and knowledgeable. She doesn't push you to make decisions for your pet, eventhough it is obvious of her true feelings and she will tell you. She has respect for you as a person and a pet owner. She takes your feelings to heart. I'm sure if you were mistreating the pet, she would argue though. One thing I really like about the office is that the secretaries will call you the day after you have an appointment to check on your animal. Now what Vet or Doctor for that matter does that???? They have also sent me sympathy cards when my animals have died.. That deserves an A plus. The only reason I would not give 5 stars is because the office is so busy. I guess that is because Kay Geyer is so good. I think she needs another Vet to help. Then again, could she find a worthy one? I know mistakes have been made since they are so busy. I have seen this myself.. Sometimes due to misinformation or younger employees not completely following through on things that need to be done or said.. They are inexperienced in communication, etc. In this instance, it is extremely important for the pet owner to practice diligence and research their pet's health and history. Cherrystone is just too busy that I am concerned that proper care can be given to patients. I don't feel completely comfortable when I feel rushed.. Some of the employees just seem stressed. Cherrystone is open on Saturdays until noon. People seem to pour in at the last minute. Doors do not seem to be locked at noon, unless I missed something. Like I said, the office is busy. Would I take my pet here? Yes, and I have. Definitely if it was something minor. If something serious,, yes but be aware of how busy they are and mistakes might be made. read more
