Nothing says summer is coming like the first cherries of the season. After a lean few months (fruit wise) cherries burst onto the scene. Sweet and delicious and promising a rich bounty of other stone fruit to follow.
Cherries are about the ultimate in seasonal produce. They don't keep well, or travel particularly well over long distances so they can't be kept in cold store or imported by ship. When most fruit these days is available year round, the cherry season is still a few short weeks at the beginning of summer. But don't we look forward to it. Cherries are a seasonal treat. We anticipate them eagerly and when they arrive, we gorge ourselves silly (at least I do).
Cherryhill orchard has been growing cherries since the 1940s and will happily ship a box of luscious, freshly picked cherries to your door. 1, 2 and 5kg boxes, picked and shipped within 24 hours. Amazingly fresh and really tasty. Deep, dark red cherries. The kind that stain your lips and fingers purple.
They will keep a couple of weeks in the fridge so you don't have to eat them all the day you get them... although my kids give it a damn good go. Seriously, we are on our second 5kg box already.
Even better, if you live in Melbourne you can go to the orchard an pick your own cherries fresh off the tree. read more
