Stopped in today after a few year hiatus. We've always liked Chentes and today didn't disappoint. I saw reviews where they don't make in house tortillas anymore but they were grilled and had some crunch to them. We had the beef enchilada plate and combo plate. Both were filling and good. Their refied beans are actually refried with lard and not the soupy mess most people serve....damn good. The beef enchiladas were full of meat. The sauce was adequate but nothing Over the top. They did try and charge me for two servings of fresh jalapeños that I returned after requesting freshly chopped serranos. That was the only hiccup. Man the referrals weren't joking when they said authentic Mexican food! This is a must try if you ever in Alice! I failed to get my waitresses name, but the service was awesome! I will give 5 stars to this place for one reason and one reason only....the enchiladas. The enchiladas here are the best enchiladas you will ever find. It don't matter what part of Texas you are in the enchiladas here are the best period...hands down. This place has set a standard in enchiladas that it has yet to be matched. I have dined here and there but this is the place for enchiladas. There is other menu items that are worthy of trying but the enchiladas is the whole enchilada. Last night some friends and I met at Chentes. We were a group of 6. When we ordered we told the waitress there would be two checks, those three and us three and pointed out the parties. The service wasn't great, but not getting into that. As we went to the counter to pay, the lady at the counter grabbed our check. We explained to her we were going to have two different checks. My friend who was paying for the first three people was going to pay first. The lady who was ringing us up explained we should have had two different checks. We informed her we let our waitress know. Then the lady said we would have to go through everything individually. The lady that was paying told her I am telling you what I'm paying for and proceeded to tell her "I had the two mini taco plates, nachos with carne and two beers." The lady rang her up and she paid. I stepped up to the counter and said I have the rest. "She said, ok so the mini tacos.." i said "no, she just paid for the two mini tacos." The lady replied, "well i didn't scratch it off and someone is going to have to pay." I said, that is your error and she motioned us to go get the party that left. I said "I'm not going to get her." She replied, "well someone is going to have to pay for them." I replied "that was your mistake, she told you she had the two mini taco plates." Then she replied, "this is why there should have been two different tickets, which we once again told her we told the waitress." I told her "i will just pay for YOUR mistake and pay for the tacos." We went back in forth and I did continue to point out it was her mistake but it was paid for. I paid my bill and left. After wards I called my friend and proceeded to tell her what happened after she left and we did the math. Her bill was 48 dollars for the following 2 mini tacos specials (12 each) nachos (7 dollars), 2 beer (5.75 each), side of cheese (2-3 dollars) and 2 waters (free). Which comes to about 45 dollars plus tax, 48. So she did pay for the tacos and I paid for them. The lady was so rude and nothing was itemized on the receipt, but the math was matching the price. This lady was just more concerned without being wrong when she actually did make a mistake. If you eat here just watch for the total at the end. If I'm not mistaken the beer was also supposed to be 4 dollars (not 5.75). But nothing is itemized so just watch out when you pay. read more

Five stars for embodying what "good food" was during my childhood... for being the first place I ever tasted cheese enchiladas, pico de gallo, and house made flour tortilla chips... for being what we looked forward to after church, what we order and take home in hideously huge proportions for family gatherings... for being a part of my youth in general. Two stars for changing. I mean, I know nothing stays the same, but if you're willing to play the game, I'll keep comin' around again. Anyway, enough nostalgia. I know this place has gone through some changes from the beloved Mexican food destination it's been, an absolute staple in Alice, perhaps the most well known restaurant we had (Ya know, before Jaliscience...). I know that sometimes flies buzz in the window or it's loud or the service isn't amazing or you've had better or whatever. If those things bother you you're probably not drinking your margarita correctly. And probably you aren't me, and you didn't sit in those chairs since before your feet could touch the ground. Tried this place on my way back from the valley. I was craving enchiladas so figured why not. I had some cheese enchiladas. They were just ok. Cheese was melted but they didn't have that chili gravy most Tex Mex places put on enchiladas. It did have a brown color to the topping but it was not good at all. I have nothing but compliments about this little restaurant in my hometown. It serves some of the best Mexican food I've had outside of my own mother's kitchen and definitely trumps some of the bigger, fancier establishments you'll find in larger cities. I always recommend the enchiladas--they are tasty! The items are reasonably priced, with an average of about $8.00 per platter. The service and atmosphere are not bad, although the place does get crowded on occasion. Along those lines, finding parking can sometimes be an issue if you come during peak hours. But, rest assured, the crowding is not without good reason--good things come to those who wait :-) So, if you ever find yourself in Alice stop over at Chente's and grab a bite to eat. We our order was for nachos and two hamburger steak plates. I can understand if it had been a busy evening but we arrived here early enough to beat the dinner crowd. Three stars for a restaurant in Alice is a really big deal. This town knows NOTHING about decent food. However, Chente's is the only place so far who's enchiladas were good enough to eat. (I am from New Mexico, so I have very high standards for enchiladas... Texas just don't know how to do it very well.) The margarita was pretty good, made with decent liquor. However you can only get it frozen. The chips were very tasty, and the pico and salsa weren't half bad either. The service was great, very friendly, and even gave me a fried egg on my enchilada, even though they already put away all their breakfast items. Super friendly staff - which is no surprise this place has been an Alice staple I learned for a very long time and you don't last without good food and service. We ordered some nachos and they were delicious - just chip, bean, steak, cheese and guac. The beef had a lot of flavor too. They were delicious! For lunch I got the special - chicken enchiladas with chicken fajitas - ok the chicken enchiladas were amazing seriously some of the best I've had and I can't wait to go back and try the cheese I hear they are to die for. They take Amrican Express AND they speak ENGLISH! O ... all that and the food is great. If you are staying at the Holiday Inn or La Quinta in town, it is about 2.5 miles out. If you are using GPS to get here, it looks like you are headed out of town. Be careful on going in to the lot because the parking is terrible but, like the other reviewers said, it is definitely worth the trouble. They told me 15 minutes on my enchilladas so I went out to the car to wait. After only five, the manager brought my food out smiling and telling me thanks ... that is DEFINITELY not normal for any place I have eaten in ANY other part of the country. I felt like a regular instead of an interloper from TN who couldn' order in Spanish. This is a great place for non Texas travelers. read more

Whats this all about? ... On Facebook! Jennifer P. Who thought having supper with family and friends would cause such chaos? Today at Chente's we were asked to get up and leave because our children were giggling and having a good time? The owner came up to our table and states that, " her customers were upset because our children were being " loud" and we needed to leave." We told her this is a public place and there is no sign that says no children allowed and we are paying customers as well. Rationally upset, we get up and leave since they refused our service. Our plates were still intact!! Waitress came out and told us, " y'all need to pay the f****ing bill!" While writing down out license plates. We went to the nearest store and called the police ourselves to state out side. In minutes we were surrounded by 5 police cars because Chente's pushed the panic button for $46.00. The principle of the matter is not to pay the bill although we did not touch our food but the way we were approached and asked to leave because of giggling children. My family, friends nor I will ever return to such a disrespectful, discourteous restaurant!! Please share!! read more

It's been a couple of years since I was in Alice, but I have eaten at Chente's since the early '80s. Great food, with a tremendous variety, and their own chips and salsa is the best I've ever had. The only complaints I can think of are the wait for a table and not enough parking space, due to the huge crowds who, obviously, agree with me. read more

My husband is a sucker for barbacoa and it did not disappoint! I had the cheese enchiladas. Oh. My. Goodness. Best. Enchiladas. Ever. Seriously. I've eaten a lot cheese enchiladas in my day and these were probably the best I've ever had. Easily top five. The chips did suck, though. Hence the 4 stars and not 5. They were not made in-house and were a bit on the stale side. But another review said that, so we weren't surprised by that. The little taco cup that the guacamole salad came in was also stale. The guacamole salad was very good, though. Rice and refried beans were excellent. The flour tortillas are made in house and good. Staff and service were nice. Our experience was absolutely ridiculous. We sat with a party of 8 and took 1 hour and 45 mins to get nachos, 3 orders of enchiladas, and a side of rice and beans, and fries for our kids. 4 large parties that were sat 20+ minutes after us were served, ate, and left before we even got our food. To add to the incompetence of this restaurant, when we got our food (after I complained to the owners wife) they "forgot" my wife's enchilada plate. The waitress STILL hadn't brought napkins or silverware, and everyone's food was terrible. No one finished their plate. When I went to the cashier (owners wife) to pay for this food and terrible experience, she tried to ring me up for a 15% gratuity and the enchiladas my wife had to take to go. I demanded that she remove both of those charges, and told her that I just can't understand why it took us almost 2 hours to get our food and her response was "we are not a fast food restaurant." As I proceeded to pay $100 for my families experience I refrained from any further conversation as it would have escalated. I had 3 kids on a school night and we did not get out until after 10. We arrived at 7:45!!!!! My family and friends will no longer spend a penny at this establishment and will patiently wait until they are shut down to make room for courteous business owners who actually care about customer experience. Never again. When I tried to call to speak to the owner I continuously was hung up on. I will be reporting these business practices to the better business beureu given the fact that a lot of these reviews match our concerns as well. Terrible owners. Terrible establishment. Best fajitas! Best enchiladas! Home made tortillas are awesome! We live 1500 miles away and miss it terribly.

My family stopped by for lunch on 6/18/11 and found it to be a pleasant and delicious experience. The decor is quaint with a mixture of old '50-'60 dinette sets , Mexican wall sconces, and a display cooler with desserts. Once seated, the waitresses approached to take our drink order and leave the menus, fairly quickly. She promptly returned with our drinks, as well as an order of freshly fried flour chips, salsa, pico de gallo, and an order of charro beans. The chips were a rarity, since many Mexican restaurants serve either freshly made or store bought corn chips. We perused the menu and found that most of the dishes were priced fairly for restaurants in the area. The waitress was very courteous, cordial, and attentive and ensured that our glasses and chip bowl were never empty. The only negative is that our waitress should have been a bit more familiar with the less commonly known dishes on the menu. Once our food arrived and throughout our meal, the waitress would frequent our table and make sure we were wanting for nothing. The food was served hot and it was delicious. Overall, this was a great experience and we will return again. read more
