I was so surprised by the welcoming nature of Sensei Jeremy and the rest of the class (the judoka). At the Academy of Gulf Breeze, they were very nice and patient in explaining the various techniques. I felt at home training with the class and comfortable doing the ogoshi throw and various floor holds, even as the only woman. As someone who has lifted weights her entire life, I value instructors who teach proper form and explain the importance of engaging certain muscles when performing an exercise. Sensei Jeremy is really dedicated to teaching the art of judo to and runs the studio in a very professional manner. The studio is extremely nice and filled with the basic amenities (e.g. mats, bathroom, water station, storage area). I will definitely return to this studio and I recommend it to anyone looking for an excellent place to learn self defense and/or get a great workout.

I'm a purple belt from LA that visited Pensacola for a few months. I needed to find a place to…read moretrain, and ended up selecting 9th Jiu Jitsu because David, the head instructor, was very welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. While I was there, the curriculum focused on strong fundamentals and that's why I elected to stay. This is the perfect place for those looking to build a solid foundation in jiu jitsu in the Pensacola area. David will teach you the textbook execution of jiu jitsu and provide skillful insight on what he finds the most successful. He is also open minded to new techniques without the ego that I often find at some gyms. All the training partners were friendly and provided a great learning environment for all levels. If you are new, there is a strong group of white belts that you can join your jiu jitsu journey with. The gym is well maintained and always clean. I couldn't recommend this place enough, and I will definitely stop by whenever I'm back in town.

I've trained at a number of gyms over the years, and one thing that really stands out at Capitão is the amount of high-level experience on the mats. I've never trained anywhere with this many black belts consistently in the room, and it makes a huge difference. The 5 a.m. classes are also a big plus and make it much easier to stay consistent with training around a busy schedule. The gym has a great balance of hard training, good instruction, and a friendly team environment. I'd absolutely recommend Capitão to anyone in the area looking for a solid jiu jitsu/ mma gym.

Core martial arts has multiple programs, each with different instructors of different competencies…read more I enrolled in the Muay Thai program under Chris Scott. While the students and staff displayed respect and competency, Scott uniquely showed a lack of either. During the 1 hour training sessions, Scott would regularly begin class about 15 minutes late chatting or bragging about his personal skill in fighting, and when he actually began class, he would spend most of his time on his phone and forget what exercises he asked us to do. There is no training plan, neither in a day or throughout the year - he arbitrarily assigns exercises. Quite frankly, for the price, you will receive the same training from obtaining a regular gym membership and watching youtube. The only benefit that training under Scott provides is the chance to spar and train with other fighters who have already had training elsewhere. Competency aside, there is the aspect of respect. While the terms are thrown around casually in the current political landscape, Scott is genuinely sexist. When women are not present in the room, he enjoys leading conversations about how women are less capable or motivated than men. In one particular incident, he spent the first 15-30 minutes of a class chatting with other men how women spend their time chatting instead of training. It's frankly pathetic. Scott tries so hard to act masculine that he only comes across as a little insecure boy. What a joke. Overall, while I would recommend the gym, I would not recommend any program under scott. Edit: After posting this review, Scott called me to tell me to take down the review. He informed me that for posting this review publicly, I am pathetic and that it confirmed every negative thing he thought about me. He literally challenged me to fight him at the gym to prove how manly he is. Very masculine.
