The palace itself is ok. Well maintained. It's basically a slavery museum because a former bishop was involved in the abolition movement. It was an odd find in england. As an American i was hoping for british history, but if you are interested, theres a lot of good info. The docent was very kind and knowledgeable. The chapel was beautiful but for looking old... the art was from the 1950s. It honestly kinda felt like a scam. All in all it's free (they suggest a £5 donation) and was warm on an English winter day. Just be prepared to be disappointed if youre looking for a British Palace. It didn't seem to fit that particular bill.

And since my partner at the time also wanted to check out the Ted Lasso pub, which happens to be in the same town of Richmond, just on the entire opposite side of the town, we figured we could kill two birds with one stone....or visit two attractions on one train ride. I am not a Bridgerton gal, but apparently some of it was filmed at this castle...I was here because of the Tudor and Stuart connections! It is huge and beautiful and I could have spent 3 more hours here! But also there was a private event being set up for the next day so some of the gardens were off limits unfortunately. The gardens too! GORGEOUS. LOVELY. WONDERFUL. Highly worth getting the audio tour, as well. It was so interesting to hear about the different royals who made residence here and how they each changed the palace. Entry is timed, and I would recommend aiming for earlier in the day if you are really in to the history and seeing it all. Because there is A LOT to see. It helped that the weather was perfect during my visit here since there are gardens to explore and much of the interesting parts of the castle grounds are open to the elements, but it was a highlight of my trip to London no matter what.

Visiting Leighton House was one of the many highlights of my trip to London a week or so ago…read more Leighton House is a historic house near Holland Park; it was the home of Victorian painter Frederic Leighton, who served as the president of the Royal Academy. Designed by George Aitchison for Frederic Leighton, construction began in 1865, with extensions added on in 1869-1870, 1877-1881, 1889-1890, and 1894-1895. The famous Arab Hall was an addition made to the house in 1877-1881. When Leighton died in 1896, his collection was sold off by Christies. The house was retained and opened as a museum in 1990. In the 21st century, an attached building was added to house visitor services, galleries for exhibits, bathrooms, and a cafe. We started with the room downstairs, which had a short video about the house and a gallery of architectural sketches and drawings of Leighton House. Then we went up the very cool staircase to a room where they are showing a very cool, sweet, and interesting short film about the house that they commissioned from an artist. Then, we finally went over to the house itself. As I walked into Arab Hall, my jaw just dropped: the tiles, the ceiling, the water feature... But the rest of the house is beautiful, too - with lots of art (including lots of works by Frederic Leighton) everywhere. It's a beautiful home. I loved our visit to Leighton House. I learned so much about Frederic Leighton and art of his period. It's also just a stunning piece of architecture and design. I highly recommend including it on an itinerary for a day in Kensington!

I came here as part of the Midnight Apothecary so my review really tailors around that. What a…read morewaste of my money! The two tickets I paid for included marshmallows and music; for the ticket amount, a drink should have been included. Rather drinks are an additional £7-8. Greek food (only grilled cheese for vegetarians) is additional money and cash only. Would've been smart if the organizers had bothered to let us know via email beforehand. It turns out anyone could have walked up to the roof to roast marshmallows; no one was checking wristbands there. The music was held in the freezing ass cold tunnel so after just a few minutes there, and bundled in puffer jackets, we couldn't feel our toes. I was told no heaters could be brought in because of soot in the atmosphere; fair enough but then choose another venue for this! There was mass confusion about a token system, with people asking each other about it whilst standing in queues and even a ticket person saying he didn't understand why someone upstairs was talking about tokens. The museum itself is mildly interesting. Never again.

I am ashamed to admit that I never visited the Brunel Museum the whole time I lived in Rotherhithe…read more(2 years!)...although my mum told me it is brilliant, and I do love the idea of heading underground to see the Grand Entrance Hall to the abandoned tunnel!! The Midnight Apothecary: This summer as well as the museum, on Saturdays nights there is a cocktail bar set up in the beautiful herb garden on the roof of the Thames tunnel. The 'cocktail gardener,' Lottie Muir, uses herbs (and other ingredients) from the garden to make beautiful (and strong) cocktails each Saturday night during the summer. We tried the gin and lavender fizz, and the strawberry and mint martini...they were both lovely. I honestly can't think of a more pleasant spot to watch the sunset. * Cash only! Each cocktail is £5...so remember to stock up on paper money! * The garden is quite small, so you might need to get there early if you have a large group. * If cocktails aren't enough, there are also underground tours of the museum/tunnel starting at 7:30pm. I think this costs £5. The website says it will keep going through September, so there are a few more weeks left to try it. If you live in the area - get over there!!

This was by far the most interesting site we visited in London! We bought tickets a few days in…read moreadvance and came at 3p. There was no line and someone came to the door to get us. We checked in and grabbed out audio tour. There was a kid's version of the audio guide and it was great! You start off walking through the space and learning a bunch of history. A little before midway is the museum, which we spent of our time in. The exhibits and displays were very well put together and interactive. From there, we continue on the one-way path and saw where they did the mapping, which was largely unchanged and was my favorite room. We were there about 2 hours and felt that we saw everything.

My husband and I visited the Churchill War Rooms when we were in London for a few days about two…read moreweeks ago, and it was fascinating. The Churchill War Rooms is a museum that allows you to visit the Cabinet War Rooms, the underground complex that housed a British government command center through the Second World War. Before the War, the British government estimated that aerial bombing of London could potentially kill 200,000 individuals per week. That ended up being an overestimation, but the British government knew they would need a secure place to run the government during bombing raids. The construction of the Cabinet War Rooms is the result. The War Rooms weren't in use by many staff at all times of the War, but they were used throughout the War. Churchill hated being in the War Rooms and was reluctant to spend much time there. When you visit, you can wander through the War Rooms. You can see the Cabinet Room through glass (the room where Churchill and his advisors met with the three chiefs of Staff). You can see the Map Room, Office-Bedrooms of important staff, Clementine Churchill's room, Churchill's Office-Bedroom, and more. There's also a Churchill Museum - a fairly large museum with Churchill artifacts and that tells the whole history of Churchill's life before, after, and during the War. The Churchill War Rooms are incredible and well worth a visit for anyone interested in the Second World War or Churchill. However, I had read that the museum gets very busy and crowded. That made me nervous, because I get grumpy in crowded spaces and inevitably just run through the space without paying much attention so that I can get out of there. Then I learned that they offer an early-bird tour, a guided tour that starts before the museum opens for the day. It costs about 20 pounds more than general admission, which I think is totally worth it. Since the tour occurs before the museum opens to the public and is guided, you can see and experience the museum in a much more in-depth way. Our tour guide was incredible. I learned so much from her. After the tour, you can get a headset and then head back into the museum to see any space you missed (the Churchill Museum is not included on the tour, so we wandered back to see some of that). Our tour started at 8:30 am, and when they let the public in at 9:30, the museum became totally packed! I didn't make it much longer since I couldn't get close to much with so many people in the museum. I highly recommend the early bird guided tour. But if that's not for you, I would recommend going later in the day. If you go when they open, you'll be going in with hundreds of people. Later in the day at least admission has been staggered! There's incredible history at the Churchill War Rooms. Incredible history to see and learn about. I think almost anyone would enjoy a visit here. I highly recommend it on a trip to London.

I was super excited to try it. I could tell it was not going to be a London museum experience when I was lead to this nondescript biding and had to climb the stairs up a few floor to get to it. This is a tiny museum and basically across just a couple of rooms and has info regarding the local history during the war and BC times as well. The elderly volunteer was super nice.

Practically every moment of history is well documented somewhere across London. Having been used to the vast spaces of say, the Tate Modern, I forgot that museums can be small venues, and yet be just as informative. I found the Museum of Richmond on the top floor of the Old Town Hall, which is the large Victorian building that slopes down to the riverside. I had only popped in because there was a sign outside which read 'Charity Christmas cards for sale'. I had no idea that inside this building sat Richmond Library, and on the top floor Richmond Museum. I was the only visitor in the museum, bar the staff, who could not have been more helpful and informative. In fact, they guided me through the various sections, explaining the history as they went. The most fascinating thing that I learnt was that Richmond used to have a Palace, it sat on what is now Richmond Green and was occupied by Henry VIII until he moved down the road to Hampton Court Palace. They have a model of how the Palace was laid out which I spent about half an hour gazing at. Other sections included Wartime Richmond, the slave trade connection, the railway age, information about the Royal Parks, and a section about the Carthusian Monks and their connections with neighbouring Sheen. It was one of the most informative afternoons that I have had in a long while, and it won't be long before I go back. Admission is free, by the way.

Like a lot of the museums in England, it is free, but you do have to pay to go to the exhibitions.

Dulwich Picture Gallery opened in 1811 and was the world's first purpose-built public art gallery,…read moredesigned by Sir John Soane, to House a collection formerly at Dulwich College. The bulk of the collection was assembled by two London-based art dealers on a commission from the King of Poland, but the King's abdication in 1795 and their failure to find another buyer resulted in this astonishing collection of Old Masters being bequeathed to Dulwich College instead. Visitors can now enjoy an astonishing collection of Old Masters from the 17th and 18th Centuries set in the perfection of Soane's gallery: his deceptively sophisticated yet simple design became the model for galleries around the world since. Curation is simple and clear, and audio guides are also available. It's worth a couple of hours of anyone's time and has an excellent cafe and a small shop. The nearest railway station is West Dulwich: it's a 10 minute walk through Belair Park and along Gallery Road.
