Vejle boasts a few dive bars, but this one took the cake for us. It's small enough to allow smoking…read moreunder Danish law--it's under 40 square meters (about 400 square feet). They pack clouds of smoke in here that could fill a place ten times that size, though.
There's a full lineup of bland industrial lagers on tap, and a full lineup of ordinary well liquor. You walk in and you can just hear the jukebox screech to a stop, with all eyes swiveling to you to size you up. They have live music on the weekends on the tiny little wedge stage in the corner, which is big enough for exactly one musician.
The people are older and fairly friendly, but they're from the Danish generation that didn't learn as much English (this isn't the case with kids and younger adults, who all seem to speak it). They have sweatshirts and keychains and whatnot for sale.
Best of all, "Lumskebugten" is a figurative turn of phrase in Danish, which means a little bay protected by a sandbar or something. It translates as "Sneaky Bay," which means you have to time your entry to get in, and you can get stuck there when the tide changes. Perfect metaphor for a dive bar.
