Very lucky to be living and flying in such a beautiful and scenic place of the country to fly. If actual flying isn't your thing or maybe scared of heights then you can just hop in the full motion Redbird simulator and go anywhere in the world that you'd like. Great times to be had, and with great people. The flying or pilot community is a small one, but more like a family and some of the best people I've ever met!!

I contacted CRAFT and met with their great team and they were able to take me in, assess where I was at and get me set up and ready for my checkride in a short amount of time. The aircraft's are fantastic, well taken care of and flying the Diamond DA40 of course is amazing. If you're looking to do your flight training, take a discovery flight or just take a scenic tour around Charleston, I would recommend you reach out and talk to the team at CRAFT. Thanks again to Jay, Amanda and the team over at CRAFT and of course my Instructor Jack that helped me along obtaining my IFR ticket. - Kyle H.

I had a rather bizarre experience at IFR6 which is a school that specializes in immersive IFR…read moretraining and other endorsements / ratings. They have a one week IFR program that culminates with a check ride. I did my cross country 2 days before the check ride and was not happy with my proficiency. The school is in Charleston and I had failed to consider the implications of December weather in a city on the coast. My skills were not up to par with the wind and turbulence. That is 100% on me. The day after my cross country was the last day before my check ride and I noticed I was 8 hours short of the 40 needed for a check ride. I do feel that part of what I was paying for was the school managing my time but I'll take responsibility and say that is also 100% on me for not keeping up on my hours throughout the week. I had asked what a path to success looked like the morning before my check ride and the response was we would fly off the 8 hours today. It was another day of 20 to 30 knots at 3000 ft and my head was not in the right place to receive instruction. I asked to come back for my checkride prep and checkride but that got a quick denial. We spoke for about 20 or 30 minutes and I was being pressured to stay and was offered to return in Feb or Mar for my checkride. For some reason, the longer we were in the conference room the more contentious it became. But why? I wrote IFR6 a $6,500 check and had not asked or implied I wanted any money back. I declined the delayed checkride, put on my coat and left. I was walking to the FBO to leave and never to be heard from again. This is when it got even stranger. On my walk to the FBO, my CFII calls me and asks to have a few pages out of my syllabus. I can't put my finger on why but I had become suspicious. I told the CFII that I would think about it. After entering the FBO, I got another call from one of the people who runs the place, I told her, I was talking to the lady at the FBO desk and to give me a minute. She hung up on me and immediately drove down to the FBO. She confronts me at the FBO desk, demanding the papers and stating that they had to be turned in to the FAA (I've since spoken to the FSDO, there is nothing to turn in to the FAA). I again declined handing them over and they were already in my plane at that point. She then loudly (I'm not easily embarrassed) proclaims that I have her property in my plane and she demands access to the ramp. The FBO denied her access and assured me no one would be given access to my plane. It was so bad I took my phone out of my pocket and was about to call 911. I knew that would just escalate the situation and decided instead to disengage. The IFR6 person then offers to refund my checkride fee ($500) in return for the pages. I continue to decline. Fast forward a couple days, I'm now home and the CFII calls me to say he needs the papers in order to get paid. That's much different than "they have to be turned in to the FAA". I still don't really know what was going on or what happened. All I wanted was to return for checkride prep and a checkride. The way IFR6 treated a customer who had written them a large check a week prior was despicable. As tempting as it is, go somewhere else.

Laura was very helpful with getting the ball rolling over Thanksgiving weekend. The best part of the process was getting assigned to the chief pilot instructor Zach Dodd. He is a fantastic instructor and very knowledgeable. He went out of his way to show me the finer details during this accelerated course for the instrument rating. Initially, the program seems a bit costly. However, I compared the same number of hours I spent at IFR6 with the hours at my home airport, and I realized it's much more productive to get intensive training day after day. Also, it was nice to know I'd have a check ride at the end of the experience.

I have found all the instructors to be extremely competent and professional. Also hardworking and willing to go out of their way and adjust schedules to meet their students needs. The aircraft are well maintained and availability hasn't been an issue. They have onsite maintenance if any issues arise which keep the planes flying and students progressing. The school itself is inside a well maintained facility with a fun lounge. Plenty of space to study before or after flights. They also do charter flights and helicopter rides so there's always lots of activity. The SC weather is also good for training with lots of VFR days and lots of good views of the coast. I'd highly recommend this school to anyone looking to start their career or fly for fun

My flight teacher was so nice, he let me fly almost the entire time-but he was obviously helping me out. I got to do everything but land. That's the hardest part he said. I've done a lot of crazy and adventurous things in my life but this has to be one of the most memorable. They gave me some financing options when I asked and answered all of my 500 questions and never seemed to mind me driving them nuts with all the questions. I'm just a very detailed person and I like to know all the info. No question, I am getting my license! And I'm doing it there. They have a beautiful new building that takes up an entire city block (no joke), packed with cool flight simulators and stuff and it just feels like a big, fun pilot playhouse-yet professional at the same time. I can't really describe the place other than to say FUN! There were a lot of kids (full time airline pilot cadets in training) that looked to be in their early 20's or maybe late teens buzzing around in the learning labs and hallways that made me feel 20 years younger just by the energy in the place. Everybody was talking about airplanes and helicopters and were kind of working together to help one another learn using all the cool 'toys' the school has. I've never been in a learning environment quite like this. So cool! These guys have totally changed the way school is run. If I could go back in time I would've easily chosen this route instead of wasting 7 years in college and post grad. Seriously rethinking my current career in the legal world now! I can't wait to take my son there next weekend.

During this time, I took my first flight with 1st CFI which was about 45min, I asked a ton of questions as to who would be my flight instructor, how long it would take and the cost. I was advised that the flight instructor will depend on a few factors, My schedule and compatibility. Great! On my second flight I was introduced to 2nd CFI, an older retired military pilot, we hit it off right away, during our first flight he introduced me to a few maneuvers, Slow flight and S-turns, he then asked if I have ever flown before, I advise just as a passenger. Things went well for the next 5 flights, Then Covid hit, for 3 months the school was closed. On 5/14 /2020 the school opened up and I was called, at that time I was advised the 2nd CFI would not be coming back so they paired me with a Younger CFI, I was concerned about this and because I began with 2nd CFI and already had time and money invested. It was explained to me that my log book will tell the story and not to worry because I would not have to start all over again that the new 3rd CFI will just continue where I left off with the 2nd CFI. I said OK and began working with 3rd CFI. We had flown from 05/14 /2020to 08/24/2021 fly approximately 3 to 4 times a month with some cancellations due to weather, maintenance and other life events. On 08/24/2021 we were scheduled to fly to Conway but I was advised that it would be my last flight with 3rd CFI as he was picked up by an airline which was great for him but my concerns grew once again, because I would have to work with yet another flight instructor. The next three flights were with 4th CFI, which was one of the worst instructors I had encountered in any profession. On the third flight I cut the flight short because he was too cavalier with safety and more concerned about building hours for himself rather than instructing. I had a conversation with him and provided him some feedback and explained that I cannot fly with him. At this point I was going to go elsewhere, the original owner at the time, apologized and got a new instructor and again my concern was time spent on training and money. She introduced me to my current instructor 5th, I was with him a few times and we also hit it off well. Here comes the hammer, the original owners decided to sell and retire, I was again concerned because I had accumulated 49 hours of flight training, 13.72 ground training and spent $10,785. Again, I was told not to worry that my logbook will tell the story and not much will change. Now 60.4hrs flight time, 21.64hrs ground a total of 82.32hrs and $13,720 spent, I was once gain mislead, the new owner has implemented a new process 6 months after he took over and without notice. According to this new process I am only now 30% completed and my instructor stated that unfortunately the time I spent with the school and instructor prior only will count as experience only. I didn't understand, experience comes from flying; I am paying them to teach. This feels to me as once the new owner took over everything prior is a wash. Now I am stuck, this is horrible.
