I'd like to give a shout out to the in-house jeweler/master craftsman, Denny Warner, at Scotsman…read moreand the customer service/sales associates at the counter. I've taken rings to be re-sized or have a diamond replaced in past years here. This visit I wanted my husband's wedding band to be resized to fit me a week after he passed. It was very busy when I walked in but I was greeted and told somebody would be with me shortly. One woman offered her help and realized she needed Denny to look at the band before she could quote a price, but he was at lunch. She called him to see when he'd be returning. I was told 20 minutes. I needed to make a call so I told her I'd be happy to wait and would be outside. When Denny was back, I was still on the phone outside. The woman came out to find me to tell me he could help me. That was amazing. When I went in, she took me back to the workroom where Denny was. I was not expecting that! He took a look and thought he might be able to compress the ring down to size rather than having to cut it and re-weld it. He said he could just do it while I was there. So we had a lovely conversation while he worked on the ring and tried it on me to test the size. He polished it up and then cleaned my own wedding ring to make it shine as well. The price to do that was very reasonable and a fraction of the cost I'd been told over the phone at another place. It was a bright spot in my day and week of an otherwise sad time. Thank you Scotsman associates and Denny!

Fidelity Wealth Management is not worth the fees or the headache…read more I was charged 1.22% quarterly and promised a "designated advisor" for that fee, which is not correct. As a paying client of Wealth Management, you get a team email address and whoever is on the advisor's team will respond to your email or you can schedule a phone mtg via their calendar scheduling system. I never met my advisor in person (only via phone), he never put any effort into building a relationship with me, he talked down to me, negated anything I questioned especially when I wanted to learn why he was investing me the way he did, he basically churned my account each month for his own benefit (commission/bonus), etc. When I asked a simple question as to whether I should start a Roth at age 59, because I'd never done a Roth before, my advisor said I could start one or not and that it was really up to me. That was it. No discussion on pros/cons, tax implications, etc., nothing. I ended up asking the same question on the Bogleheads site and received lots of very helpful free advice regarding Roth and investing in general. Fidelity sent me a customer survey and when I responded that I really needed to educate myself better so I could manage my own investments, my Fidelity advisor called me up ranting & raving that my survey comment will affect HIS bonus, etc. If Fidelity doesn't want honest answers on their obviously non-confidential survey, perhaps they shouldn't send surveys to their clients? I scheduled a phone appointment with my advisor and received several text & email messages confirming the appointment. Then, I took time away from my job and sat on the phone for over 25 minutes and my advisor never dialed in. He completely blew off the mtg. After I called his office, I was informed that my advisor was no longer with the company and was pursuing opportunities outside of Fidelity. I asked when Fidelity was going to inform me of this because I had a scheduled phone mtg today and they said his exit was abrupt and it wasn't their fault because the scheduling system is tied directly to the advisor only. After paying $5,000 for less than 9 months with a bad Fidelity advisor, I terminated Wealth Management. When I emailed Fidelity Customer Service to file a formal complaint regarding my bad experience, I received a canned scripted email saying they investigated my complaint and the only thing they can offer me is a new Wealth Management advisor within the same office. No thank you. Fidelity accepts zero responsibility if you get stuck with a bad financial advisor.

Moving to a new place is scary enough when you consider leaving everything you're familiar with…read morebehind. When you know your rent will double (if not triple!) and other things get more expensive, it makes the situation even more stressful. Before making any major decisions, I figured it best to have someone take a look at my finances. Wendy and i have known each other socially for a few years now and I knew she did something with money, stocks and helping people make more money. That's about it. Don't get me wrong, either, I don't have extra money to be putting into stocks right now. I just wanted someone who doesn't count on his/her fingers (like me!) to make sure that my updated budget seemed reasonable. She was kind enough to meet up with me over coffee and talk through my concerns about "movin' on up" to a bigger city. She busted out her financial calculator and went through all of the expected expenses and even suggested that I start saving more money as a "cash cushion" in case there were any unexpected emergencies far, far away from anyone I know. She also told me that I won't be allowed to buy clothes for awhile, but somehow I just can't stick to that rule. Guess that means I'll be eating hot dogs at home on Friday nights for awhile, huh? :) Really, it's not any financial planner's "job" to go through some sad-looking Excel spreadsheets and help you do basic math to figure out how much rent you'll be able to afford. But it was very kind of Wendy to do so and I appreciate the reassurance that everything is going to be OK. If you do have extra money to invest and want to work with someone who's savvy and trustworthy, give her a call! She'll gladly help you out!
