There's just something about Seddon. It's a weird, serene, tiny burb tacked onto the bottom of Footscray and the top of Yarraville. Wandering into Seddon is like being at a big loud party and opening a door and stumbling into a quiet room where attractive people are talking about things relevant to your interests and someone has a dog. People who call Seddon home are altogether smitten and smug. So to say that C&G is a locals' bar is pretty much the highest possible praise. Going to C&G is like stopping by a friend's place... partly because the staff there are so damn friendly. They know their customers by name and they know your order by heart. I don't even have to order anymore. I just walk in after work and place my forehead on the bar (the international sign language gesture for 'I have had a DAY') and someone puts a rosé in front of me and pats me on the shoulder. Sure, the staff are a rag-tag team of Lego freaks, snake hunters and ladies who keep dog treats in their bras, but so are ALL the best people, dammit. For a bar that looks like it's been built inside a redundant panel beaters, Charles and Gamon has a damn fine selection of beers and wine, and an excellent food menu. Pub faves like parma and burger make an appearance but so do creatures like "tomato nori jam", "wasabi cream" and "dulce de leche". Its 2018 and the world is borderless folks, get on board. The beer garden is absolutely spot on for a Sunday afternoon pint. Bring your kids, bring your dog, sign up to the dog club (for real, your doggo gets a membership card and birthday treats and everything). And there's always something to do. Trivia Wednesday, Open Mic Thursday, DJs on the weekend so you don't even have to talk to the people you accidentally agreed to spend time with. And if you're on your own, there's always a familiar face to talk shit with. Sure, some of them are non-ironic-cowboy-hat-wearing chatterboxes and jaded hospo veterans and C&G staff who are just straight slacking off, but so are ALL the best people, dammit. This is the kind of supernatural bar that you always end up at even when you hadn't planned on it. There's a reason that people gravitate toward C&G. Because it feels like home. read more
